Take off the plate that closes it. The only problem I see with this is that when you are stopped or parked, water and crap would have a great way to get under the hood. You can prevent the crap from getting in by replacing the plate with a mesh screen (you could even get it body colored, chromed, whatever, oh my!).
The other idea I have heard is to drill holes in the plate. If you drill holes in a nice pattern it would look decent.
The biggest problem I see is water coming in. Obviously the stock plate isn't completely water tight as it is only held on by 4 screws (3 on mine--I lost one
) However, the stock piece does a pretty good job or keeping water out. If you drilled holes in the plate but left a portion at the bottom alone, I would think that you could get a decent compromise. I would prefer a mesh screen, though, myself.I need to go back out and work on my car right now (don't want to sit here and think
), but does anyone have a good idea of how to open up the hood AND keep water out? I'm not worried about water entering while driving. I am concerned with the situation of the car being parked in the rain or something (no garage at school, lol). What did the second gens use? Senior Member

Yeah I have one or those closed off power bulge hoods. I would go to a junkyard and look for one but I dont want to driver 20 minutes there just yet. What I Was thinking is to get some kind of motor and turn the plate into a butterfly. When its not raining outside I will hit a button that I can designate right next to the defrost button. That will open the buter fly and if I hit it again that will close the butterfly. You know I have a spare motor from a electric hatch, I could use that. Hell yeah now I have something to do today. Thanx for striking up a real good idea for me.

A cow hood has udders and **** on it
A cowl hood has a large gap in the back of the hood to allow air to excape the engine compartment and the area of low preasure at the bottom of the wind shiel to force cold air into the engine compartment.
You would have to route ducting to the rear of the engine compartment and place the filter back there Something like a 96-97 ss filter assy. could possibally work but you would loose the effect in the bends just like the 96-97ss cars did. Basicly get a cold air kit for the car and you are still in the same place as making the cowl hood functionable. You would probably get more air with the cold air kit.

I had the cowl induction hood from an 83 TA in my old 82. I never got around to hooking it up though so it would open based on throttle position like it was supposed to though... It certainly looked to be set up to suck air into the engine (it was sealed with the air cleaner assembly when the hood was closed). That's why it's called cowl *induction*. I'm not sure exactly how it works though. High pressure area at the base of the windshield or something like that.
Reading one of the tech articles for mods for Formulas was the first time I'd ever heard the notion that it sucked air out of the engine bay.
Does anyone know for sure?
