LG4 and codereaders?

Hey guys, I have an 83 Camaro Z28 w/ the LG4 engine. I had a hypertech computer chip in the computer, and when I went to use an OTC monitor 2000 code reader/scanner I couldn't get any data out of the system. When I put the stock tuning chip back in, thinking that may have been the problem, I get the same error. I've tried two GM cartridges (both for the 83 year, one was a 3-in-1 domestic and one was GM only,) and none could read the codes from the system. By counting the engine light method, there are codes stored in the system. The scanner also can't read live engine data like engine rpm/coolant temp, etc etc. Anybody else here have problems reading codes on the LG4? (When the scanner is trying to get data I see the check engline light sputtering and flickering.) Thanks guys

83,

Your '83 used the older 8-bit ECM and slower baud rate interface. Your scanner may not be compatible. You can always use the jumper wire method and retrieve the codes by counting the MIL flashes...

My Auto Xray will read stored codes, but like Vader says, the ECM does not transmit real-time data.

Thanks for the replies 'fellas. I understand about how the code reader can't read the computer because of the slower baud rate. But, does this mean another code reader will work that is compatible? Or as somebody else said, that the computer just does not send out live data. Because the OTC monitor can't even retrieve the codes, and I've tried it with the key on, and then again with the engine running. Thanks for the help again guys.
