rear main seal oil leak
rear main seal oil leak
hey, ijust got my new exhaust on my new project the other day,and followed my dad home,it was blowing smoke everywhere,we didnt go all that far,but anyways, got it home and there was one he// of a oil leak,it was on the drivers side, and there was oil ontop the block, where the bellhousing bolts up,so we was thinkin no gasket around the distributor, but that wasnt it,but anyways,we are working on the rear main seal now,now my question is,its around a 77 motor,"350", dipstick on drivers side,2 piece rear main right??also, are we going to have to drop the oil pan to fix this?or how do we do this??thanks for all your time.

Make sure its not the oil sending unit or the rear of the intake manifold where it meets the block along the "china wall"
Both of these are bad leakers when they are bad, and real common.
I doubt if oil would get up on top of the bell housing with a bad rear main seal.

Just what engineboy said.
I thought my rear main seal was leaking also, turns out it was the oil pressure sending unit. Easy fix, and cheap.
I'd hate to see you do all of that work, just to see that the leak is still there.
Also I have the same motor you have, just wanted to say.
