gears for my stock 87 Lg4
Like the topic says im looking for gears for my stock rear ended z28. I have no clue how many bolts it is or what i need to do. I just know that i want posi and 3.73's. What will i have to change, and what will it cost me?

I would recommend 3.42s. I just destroyed my 3.73s but even before that they sucked a**. I just put 3.42s in and I love em. Good interstate milliage and good performance. Trust me.....3.73s won't do a thing for you because our trannys are already deeply geared. Just my 2 cents.

so 3.42's, i never thought about that with our trannies. it does make sense. plus the advice from mark about the cam, yes you match a cam to gears, i would never have thought however that they (3.7'3's) might make me slower. this sucks. a cam swap in my car would be hard, or so it seems. i've done intake manifold, and that was a little tough, at least with all of the wiring involved. but can i do a gear swap with the rear end still in the car? i just would like to be able to pull the bolts off of the (carrier?) and swap my gears. is that even possible. i wanna hit low 15's......

sorry bud, but it isn't that simple. You will have to replace the pinion and ring gear. The crush collar will have to be replaced and the right preload set, pinion depth will have to be reset. The ring gear will have to have the backlash set accordingly. If you really want to jump into it then buy a book and read up. It helps to know what tooth patterns to look for though. I used chalk to do mine but I have a friend come behind me with his neat little tool and check it. Anyway the gear isn't "matched" to the cam so to speak. The final gear (rear end gear ratio) should be matched to 2 things; power (what the engine is making both torque and horsepower) and rpm range. Both of these ussually go hand in hand. Cars with more horsepower (higher rpms) are going to like a numerically higher gear ratio because of the ease of jumping into higher into the rpm range. Maybe someone can elaborate on this more for me.
