the 305 isnt a real deep breathing engine so spending alot of heads really isnt needed

true, but gains can be had. I ported my L69 heads and am very happy. with the cam i have, it pulls hard to 6200 rpms. i say L98 if you don't want L69 cheapos.

the L30 heads work better on 305's than the L31 although i'd still go for the L98.

Car Craft built a 330hp 305 with untouched L31 heads. Super Chevy found 35 ponies when they swapped from L98 aluminum heads to L31 Vortecs.

Love them, plus unported they flow better on the intake side than the L98 aluminums

There aren't many guys out there who have had two of those choices on a 305 - I certainly have not. I also can't say how much improvement they made, because I did so many other things (like all of the mods in the sig) at the same time. But, I like the way the package came together (just need to get the tranny to behave for that 2-3 shift...).

what do you mean you cant get her to behave??....welp....in my 305....the car is in ALL stock trim...i can chirp them pretty good going in to second...and remember..i have a 3 speed auto...and thru 1st...if i punch it....smoke starts a flooding....welp i think im going to get the heads bare...and get some nice stainless steel valves and take my roller tips and springs over to the new heads....does it sound like a good idea?..

thanks

You forgot the option in the poll that says "don't waste your money on heads for a 305, it's not worth it"

IMHO if you "have" to get heads for a 305 make sure that they will work on a 350 when the 305 or you have had enough.

enquiring mind needs to know asap

oh and what is the L30 engine exactly ?

thanks

i would dare tell you to stay away from the 64cc or larger heads. mainly because you lose presious compression. and to regain it you have to get a higher comp piston or a thinner head gasket and it just begins a bunch of math equations. now there are 3 good head stock head options for a 305. the 416's, 081's and 601's. stock for stock i think that the 416 outflows the others by a very little. but the 081's and 416's are very common and respond well to mods for example mw66nova has a set on his 305 that went 13.0. now the 601's you cannot forget about they are a great head too. they came on a lot fo van and truck motors through the 80's. i dont know a lot about these heads but the good thing about the 601's is they flow excellent and even better than the 416's with a nice port job. and they also have a lower cc i beleive its like 52cc compared to the 416 and 081 58cc. so you can gain a little comp there. i myslef have a set of nicely done 416's on my 85 305 tpi motor and im expecting mid to high 13's out of it. but they have a lot of work done to them

well any junk yard or pick a part sould have them. as long as they have some older 80's 305's laying around your good. the 416 casting heads came on all 80 to 86 car motors and the 601's came on all 80 to 86 truck motor. dont quote me on that but i beleive those are the years. if anyone has any insite to add please do

i have untouched 416's on my 350 and they do good, not great, but good. If I would've had the money I would've had bigger valves put in. I calculated my compression to 10.47:1

Any specs on the 350 block?

What does "they do good, not great, but good," mean?

I'm thinking of dropping the 416's off of my '83 crossfire engine onto the '92 350, LO5 truck engine I have...

stock block and pistons, comp 270 h-10 cam, It'll scoot once it's going but I seem to lost some torque. I haven't driven it much waiting on my exhaust. Hopefully next weekend.
