Anybody know about electric speedometers?

Mine is broken... here is a short story,

When I go 5mph with the electric speedometer hooked up it says 40 and if that goes over 120 the engine dies?

>this was the engine and trans from a 89 camaro that had a gear driven speedometer. Astro trans put in the electic speed gear and sender in there but it doesnt work right. The only thing I can think of is if I need a different buffer

IIRC, our speedometers like to see a VSS output of 2,000 puleses per mile.
