MSD 6A ignitoin question...
Hey
I have a 1985 IROC Z Camaro with the 305 TPI engine. I am planning on doing some mods, one of those mods is a MSD 6A ignition along with high performance wires. What kinda power difference will I feel with the MSD. Anyone out there how much power difference did u feel and does the MSD igniton help with 1/4 mile times...
Thanks

It may idle a hair smoother and may seem to rev a little nicer at the higher RPMs (not like a TPI revs that high), but you won't see any gains.

I went from "just" an Accel Supercoil to an MSD 6AL with Blaster SS coil. (The Accel coil was fine, I just wanted MSD all around.) I noticed a bit more power at higher RPM's, but that's just on the butt-meter, so it could've just been my imagination.
I also noticed the car takes LONGER to start! Not by much, but it's longer. My car used to start with 1/2 second turn of the key. Now, it takes more like 3/4-1 second to start. It's kind of annoying. I still let up on the key (from habit) before the car starts.
I did the MSD box as one of my "last to do" mods. There's not much out there for a 2.8 V6. And after putting it on, I'm glad I saved it for last. I'd say just to get a higher voltage spark coil for now, and add the MSD box later.

A little piece of advice that might save you some money,
if you are planing to go out and buying an msd system, go to the titty bar instead.
If I would of known then what I know now I would of saved my self $350 buck.

After I installed my MSD6A, and blaster 2 coil, I noticed my car started better, throttle response was crisper, idle was smoother, and the tach did not work worth a damn. Also, the adapter harness I purchased had some issues with dropping the connections. (nothing like nailing it from a stop, getting to about 3KRPM and then having the engine die........) I ended up cutting off the connectors, routing the tach lead to the MSD box, and using crimp splices on the connections. Now, the tach works great, and I have no reliability problems. (which was exactly what I expected.) I still need to clean up the wiring, but, I like the MSD box.
Have fun.

Power increase? Don't make me laugh.
I put a 6AL on my car for the sole purpose of having a rev limiter. Anything else was a bonus.
It does start much easier and idles a little smoother with than without--I re-verified that a week or two ago when I was disconnecting and reconnecting the MSD trying to figure out what's wrong with my tachometer. I suppose it's possible I get a slight mileage increase as well, but I haven't measured it since I put the the thing in.
