that much from gears alone? wow. then i should gain ALOT if i plan on upgrading to 3.54s from my Vettes stock 2.59s. i figured a few tenths, not a full half second or more

sorry I am not trying to instigate here but why wouldn't you get 3.73' Everyone always says 3.42's and I was just wondering the major signifigance of this gearing. If you are going to do it why not put in a 3.73..just wondering

I'd say 3.42's would be the best bet for and LTR intake car. To tpi tends to make its power down low, and with 3.73's you'll end up going through the traps with the motor OUT of its powerband. Ive seen people who swap for 3.73's see NO gain, and loose gas mileage and driveability. I wouldnt count on .4 second gains, but they are definetly possible. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll do in stoplight to stoplight situations after the gear swap. It will wake up your car and make it feel a hell of a lot faster.

What're his other mods? I used to be able to light the tires up from a 45 mph roll in my convertible with not much more than gears, a converter, and exhaust w/stock headers.

Car: projects.......
I don't know about the rest of you but mine rips 3rd lose when it shifts. It plants hard for take offs(1.94 60ft), but I'm definitely out of motor by 5000. I'm currently running a basically stock 350 TPI with stock limited slip and 3.27's. When i jerk the shifter back and plant my foot in it it blows a puff of smoke around 45-50. And I'm not talking exhaust...

When I was still auto and kicked it down I broke loose bad..spinning..then chirped into 2nd..with the stock 3.27's . Even when my car was 100% stock..I could chirp into 2nd with suto.....or punch it down and chirp. I know a kid with a lightly modded 88 LX that is auto with 2.73..he can chirp on kickdown too. If he has 3.08's he must be standard..the are not available with auto...only 2.73's ot 3.27's with auto. It is easy to chirp with 5spd. Before I put Nitto's on I chirped in even in 4th..now spin in 1st..chirp 2nd..chirp 3rd..

Can you downshift to 1st or 2nd gear from 4th? I would of thought that would break the tranny? I mean what is 1st gears max speed? Wouldn't downshifting that low slow your car down? I never knew that this could be done. Please enlighten me on how this works.

while we're all sharing our lack of traction stories I guess Ill say that the first time I hit the nitrous in second gear at around 40 I SMOKED the tires without a downshift... it gets squirrly with the DRs on, but street tires are downright absurd.
I guess its cool to see smoke the tires at highway speed (by the time they stopped smoking). But Id rather be tossed in my seat with the tires hooked

With 3.45's and a 6200 rpm rev limit, I usually shift into second about 40-45 mph and then 3rd right around 85 mph according the stock speedo.

My car was a former 4 cyl 5 speed car, thus the 7.5" rear with 3.45's. It's coming out in favor of an 8.8" with 4.10's very soon.

Put some money into your suspension so you plant and go! Gears will help, but make sure you match everything.

There is something seriously wrong if you gained nothing from going from 2.73 to 3.73's. You should get a noticable improvement in ET's. Makes no sense at all.

except for when you go out of your powerband and stay there.
if your car like most tpi cars makes power up to about 4000rpms and then takes a nose dive that is worse then hitting the brakes and change gears to where you stay from about 3800rpms-5500rpms then you not making as much power as you might from 2800rpms-4500rpms.
