Should I be scared?
A kid that graduated from my school last year wants to race. He has a 97-98 Civic and its stock. Fart tip and tail-lights but that doesnt count. I'm in an 88 Iroc-Z with the l03 and automatic, he is manual. Wants to race from a stop light. Should I be afraid of this kid ? Should I race over a long distance or will he just catch me? Will I win off the line and should only race him about 1/8 mile or less?

Lets put it this way, I raced an almost identical car in my 86' Fiero SE and destroyed it. The Fiero was a fast car but its no IROC. I dont think you have anything to worry about.
I ran one of those at the track a few weeks ago. We went 2 times and he lost both by 1/2 a second. This was a hatchback with a bunch of stuff done, everything but a power adder. He ran like a 10.3 and worse than that the second time. This is th 1/8th by the way. I had a buddy in a RS running 10.1's with a pegleg. Go run him!
He even had an Integra motor in the car!

We were out in my friends moms 1.6 VTEC civic the other night. Compared to his NA MR2 there was no contest, his MR2 would waste it. His MR2 does mid 15s or so. You should win no problem.

you could get an LO3 in an iroc?
If its a Vtec it'll be close, if not he'll be staring at your tailights..

Thanks for the reply's. Haven't talked to the kid with the car but I heard he is talking smack already. Something about putting 50 bucks on it. I was nervous until these reply's. I'll still be nervous with money on it. I am supposed to pick up a motor later this week I bought. It is a TPI and either a 350 or really strong 305 (the owner ran a 14.74 with automatic and 3.73's) and then I would deffinately stomp him after the swap. I'll post the results if I ever get to race him.
don't worry. The '97-'98 cars didn't come from the factory with any DOHC VTEC engine. The only engines that came in those stock were no bigger than 1.6L, and only one (the EX model) has VTEC (rated at a whopping 127 horsepower). Just to be safe, crack open his hood to see if it's the stock engine. If it says DOHC VTEC then you might have something to be worried about (I had a '96 Integra GS-R that regularly beat 5.0's even when I had passengers in the car). Otherwise if it's just a SOHC VTEC and you don't see a Turbo, then take him for a ride in your car and politely tell him that it's not worth his time or risking a ticket to race.

if its an ex model civic then it has a 1.6 sohc vtec worth about 127 horse. in a 5 speed they are good for low to mid 16 seconds. with a few mods - intake/header/exhaust they will run high 15s to low 16's.
in your lo3 you'll pound him off the line, and it would take him about 90 mph to catch you.
if you go from a rolling start, he could just barely beat you if he's a good driver (i beat an lo3 in my civic this way-it was a 92 rs heritage) then i raced the guy from a standstill and even with a perfect launch he was getting 2 cars on me by 30 mph.
but if he has no mods you should edge him

This kid is starting to chicken out so I told him no money on it. He is still talking smack when I'm not around. I guess he heard my car the other day and that scared him a little. I know for a fact he is not a good driver, still getting used to the 5 speed I guess. I'm gonna find out exactly what his car is but no matter what I'm gonna race him and pray to *** that nothing goes wrong and I win. He keeps putting it off and its pissing me off, I wanna race already and stop talking.

Not tryin to flame or anything but they did come with L03's. I wish my car wasn't an L03 but unfortuneatly it is. I checked and my car has the original motor and it is a real IROC-Z.
Stomp Him!!!!I've never found a stock Civic that did better than 17-18 secs. I've watched several fart-canned VTEC's going through the traps at around 16.5. Your cars got that in it.

Well, after thinking long and hard this unedumacated civic driver says he doesnt wanna race me. He says something about a bad tranny (he just doesnt know how to drive it) and a failing fuel system
He says he wants to race when his car is running right later this summer and he will catch me on the local cruising strip. I know he only wants to race later cause he is gonna get Nitrous or something of that sort but thats okay with me. By the end of the summer I hope to have 3.73's with posi and drop in a 350 (the TPI deal fell through so if anyone has one for sale let me know, as long as it runs) or a Nitrous kit installed. I guess I will just have to race him some other time.

I know this should probably be on the classified board but I can't find it and I forgot to mention. I'm interested in a 350 wether it is carb, tbi, or tpi. I am just tired of having to actually think twice about racing imports.

Come on dude you do the math 4 banger agianst an V8 and the 4 banger doesn't have a power adder . There's no fear . Tell that civic dude to bring it on and then drop some gears and display some skills on him. Read the sig "Drive it like you stole it". TGO Supporter

not to start a flame war, but a good driver in a stock civic ex should be able to run a high 16. mine, with just an intake will run approximately 16.0-16.2, based on running it against my z28, and against misc. other cars, including many l03s. as much as i love f-bodies (especially third gen camaros) i get tired of people here in columbus w/ l03 and lg4s who think that their stock car can run 12's b/c an ls1 with mods will, just as much as many of you hate "ricers" who think that they can run 12's with tire flies, an intake, fart tube and a copy of the fast and the furious.
if i ever, and this is rare, try to pick a race w/anyone, its b/c i know that it will be a close race. i dont ever try to rev at ls1, lt1 and stang gt's, b/c i know what my slow car can do.
so i say to all of the imports: fast and the furious will not make your car fast (you actually have to do work and spend money)
and i say to all the camaro/mustangs/ ect. not all imports are slow, and not all are ricers. a stock lg4 or lo3 will run basically the same or slightly better than a stock sohc vtec civic. just 'cause it says camaro on it or has a v8, doesn't allways mean its fast., besides isn't it more fun when people work together to help each other make their cars fast, or handle better or whatever; import or domestic it shouldn't matter.

I gotta agree with costill91Z. I know alot of kids that think there cars are the sh*t because it has a v8 and some who think they have the fastest car because they have seen The Fast and the Furious one too many times. Technology has made it possible for newer I-4 motors to run with older v8 motors. I still think there is no replacement for displacement but a 2000 4-banger civic with some mods can take my stock L03 v8 camaro. Thats why I asked if I should be scared or not. People just gotta realize what there car can and cannot do.

also whats so bad about having lsd as in your car info. lsd is good for your car and gets better grip.

dont be scared.. fear makes you weak.. just dont get caught street racing.. a stock civic will top mid 16's at best.. maybe worse.. my brother used to have a 95(not same generation) civic.. had an intake, header and cat.. still was slow as ****.. couldnt even chase down an extracab 4.3L auto s-10.. I have a regular cab 4.3L 5spd s-10 xtreme as well and no stock civic has come close to this 16.0 @ 88.. hahaha when my oldest brother had this truck he raced many a civic and prelude and beat them..
EDIT: one more thing, the truck has 3.08 GEARS!!!!! i can pull off a 1/4 mile just under the yellow before the redline in third..

depends on generation of civic. some of them have managed to get mid 15's and very few reaching into the low 15 stock. but those are usually the si style civic and actually have someone who knows how to drive a fwd car
