My friend has a 97 TA with the 6 speed, I belive it is stock. He is an alright driver. What do they run in the 1/4?

I have a 82 Z with 350, edelbrock performer intake and 750 carb, 3947041 heads, comp cams xtream energy 268 , hedman shorties and hedman y pipe, 3" exaust, Turbo 350 tranny, stage 2 shift kit and 2500 stall, and a posi with 3.42s

what do you think Ill run?

No they are not slow. If his Trans Am has ram air it has 305hp, if not it's got 285hp and they should do the 1/4 in the high 13's but they can get in the 12's n/a without lifting a valve cover.

I have to agree those engines have alot of potential just with mass air flow sensors and other stupid little things liek exhaust and that engine will FLY. I say you guys shoudl race tosee who wins. I think you will if he doesn't know what he is doing but I think you two will have alot of fun

LT1's have gotten a bad rap lately.

Really they are GREAT motors. With minor bolt ons they can be running very low 13's consistantly. They also like a little nitrous. They are a huge improvement over L98's, they just look bad compared to LS1's.

I forget where I heard it from, but from a modding stand point LT1s are better than LS1s.

The LT1 is still preferred in the aftermarket because it's been around longer and more aftermarket parts are available. A Camaro performance magazine did a shootout of the LS1 vs. LT1. The LS1 got the vote for the better motor but still needs more time for the aftermarket to develop

I bought my LT1 over an LS1 for 3 reasons:

1) 8 individual coils scare the hell outta me...can you say nightmares down the road??

2) Has GM ever made ANYTHING out of aluminum that either a) did not have some sort of gasket leak or b) did not crack? No, they haven't!!

3) I liked the idea of having the last 350 ever put in a production car

I sell Olds and Pontiacs, and I have driven tons of LS1 cars...at least 15. And none ever had the low end grunt the LT1 can put out. Over 3500, the LS1 has the edge, no question. But for the way 90% of us drive, the LT1 is not inferior in street driving.

Sure, LT1s have their weak points...Opti Spark ignitions and intake leaks being the main two. But overall, its just a sold, bulletproof, powerful SBC. How could you not love it? And its true...bolt ons alone will have you running high-12s/low-13s.

Mine's staying stock though...think it might be worth something down the road

Jason,
8 coils scare you, but optispark doesnt?!?

Anyhoo, LT1's are great and in stock form will FEEL a ton faster than LS1's.

Back to the original post,
Stock LT1 M6's run very low 14's stock. With an awesome driver who isnt scared to burn up his clutch they can pull a high 13. Your combo seems like it should be at least somewhere in the mid 13's so I give you the race by a good margin. Get a good launch and you'll have this one in the bag.

My 1994 Trans Am GT ran 13.9 with minor bolt-ons

I like the LT1 better than any LS1, especially the 1996-1997 SS or WS6 I have seen these run 13.8 with only a K&N

"They also like a little nitrous"

Hellz yeah they do! Cat back, slicks, little things like filter/MAF n stuff + a 125 shot = way into the 11s! At least from what I've seen.

just like any other engine, LT1's are great but hav their weeknesses. I hate the friggen opti-spark, its the biggest peice of trash GM has made. that is the main thing I hate about the engine. but everything else I aboslutely love. and like some other guys said, it absolutely loves bolt ons. with the mods Ive got in my sig, Im running very low 13's, possibly close to 13.0 Ive never taken it to the track but Ive got the speeds for low 13's. I raced an LS1 a while back that had exhaust and intake lid. I think we were both surprised, I jumped him off the line by almost 2 lengths, and had him through 2nd gear. but as soon as we hit 3rd gear he started pulling by me, and beat me by about 1-2 lengths, it was a great race though. but like everyone else knows they have no low end grunt. they are turds off the line. oh yeah, and he had tires, Im running half bald yokohamas so I couldnt really even launch. its great though, Ive surprised quite a few people

When I was bone stock a guy with a 95 T/A with long tubes and a cold air raced me and he barely pulled away. I was pretty impressed. I raced the guy again the other day...outcome wasn't the same. :nono:

tell me who makes more low end power. thats right the LS1. The LT1 just feels stronger down low. LS1's just have trouble hooking up most of the time if you can't drive.

In my LT1 Trans Am I was never even close to being beat by any Mustangs. I doubt your car is what you say it is.

And yes I know some Cobras are fast

i don't want to take sides here...but we should leave the monkie alone, who cares what he posts, some people take this stuff too seriously! I will just say,I test drove a '98 SVT cobra and a'95 Z28 with about the same milage 50k on the same day....from a drivers standpoint, the SVT had it!!! sorry f-body people,I can appreciate a car when it earns my respect.

I really don't care if monkie has a nice car, either someone bought it for him or he bought it himself,it doesn't matter to me.

unless monkie's car is SERIOUSLY modded,he will find out what a beat-up '84 Trans Am's tailtights look like when the new engine is in! sorry monkie,it's not a ford vs. Chevy thing,it's all about HP & traction.

I said that I was impressed that a 275hp brick could beat my car stock. Get the big stick out of your ***. I could care less if I'm pissing you off or not. Get over it, its the internet. I never threatened anyone on this board. And if you look, I don't start crap other people do with me. They throw up the BS flag, I come back to prove them wrong.

WOW! you must have had one of those special LT1 T/As! If yours was anywhere short of a full exhaust, gears, and intake you would find out that the 1999 Cobra did indeed have MUSTANG written on the back bumper if you raced me.

Finally someone that has figured this out. In the early to mid 90's the race against Cobra and LT1 ALWAYS went to the Cobra. Most people say "aww his dad bought it for him" without even knowing anything. I pay for it out of my pocket with 2 jobs. More than most kids can say at my age. Most of you guys get jealous as hell cause you didn't own a $20k car at age 17. Maybe if you worked as hard as I do you would have. I know a guy that has 2 jobs, puts the money he makes into stock, sells that, and now owns a new M5 BMW. You have to bust your *** to make a living in this world. Bitching wont get you far. A lesson alot of guys here need to learn. And junkyarddog if you have a 84 T/A that can beat my Cobra I will be the first guy to give you props. Not like guys on here that would make excuses like hell. Some people need to lighten up.

i dont get why some people try to start fights over the internet? do u think yer badass or something???

u pay for your car with 2 jobs?? well good for you!!!

well done, congrats on working HARD for your car and so you could prove people on the internet WRONG!!!!

way to pat yourself on your back, im sure youre simling right now. no one cares if u paid for yer car yourself, big deal, i bought my car myself, u dont see me braggin every other post that its the fastest deal out there and that my daddy didnt spend a dime on it. if u feel u need to justify your existence based upon whether you paid for your car youself and modded it yourself perhaps you need a women or a good physciatrist.

stop starting internet fights you goon!

and yes, your posts on a thirdgen dedicated website suggest you are starting something other than what is accepted.

Ummm no my LT1 was normal,

As for your LT1 vs Cobra the Cobra alway lost from 93 to present

Even the non ram air LT1 could spank one, so the ram air was just adding insult to injury for the Cobra.

Ford should have stuck with one cam then they were competition.

Even the new Cobra SC is said to run mid to high 12's hmmmm

2002 SS runs 12.9 N/A

An LT1 is a L98 with reverse cooling, better heads, a little more agressive cam, and a better breathing intake. Otherwise, there isnt much difference to them. Thats why a very lightly modded L98 will run with them, or beat them.

However the LT1 is a fantastic motor, and has the performance venture of all SBC's....serious horsepower.
