Tonight I met up with this kid who's parents bought him a brand new WRX. Well we decided to race, he took me to a light which he said was exactly 1/4 mile. We lined up and me being inexperienced with the car nailed the gas as soon as the light turned green. I went sideways and kept spinning for at least 100 feet. When I hooked I was 2 1/2 cars behind. I kept on it and by the end of the race I gained about 1/2 a car. The race actually turned out to be less then 1/8 of a mile, I'm thinking I could have caught him up top, right?
Well I know my car is a proven 13-sec ride, so all I have to do is practice launching and I should have him. Also I should dump the damn Q-Jet as soon as I can!

I dont know if you would have caught him. Would have been close on the top end. You might have been able to pull it off but it is hard to say for sure. Work on those launches.

Those cars stock are not in the 13's. I think you would have caught him but work on the launches those awd cars ( Any dumbass can launch the crap out of them without wheelspin) THose cars should be able to take you off the line no prob. But awd is a drag and you should be able to beat him. Bring him to a track.

Supreme Member
Yeah, AWD is easy as anything to launch, but dragging is not their realm, otherwise NHRA would be flooded with them. The best place for AWDs is at autocrossing. Damn those things can handle

i'm pretty sure you would have beat him but just remember that those cars are built for high rev's (boost) so if you dont totally own them off the line they do have a chance to catchup / stay ahead. sounds like u got some traction problems so work on your launch and you'll own him every time.

you probably would have caught up to him top end. even though they have boost they really don't have a huge top end. they are more torquey in the 4-6k range and don't really have too much in the 6-7k range 7 is redline if i remember right. i haven't driven it a ton but enough to know. anyways you can't really bring your track times to the street because its hard for a rwd car to hook up as good on the street as you can on the strip. so he has the advantage of the awd. next time try to launch kindof easy and try to bog the motor if you can. if not you just have to pedal the throttle until you can get traction.
you have the power to beat him just get it to the ground.

its a turbo and all turbo cars pull at the top end (turbo lag). a co-worker has one and with a free mod u can push the boost to bar 1 (14.5) = fast

yes with an adjustable wastegate they get their full potential but in completely stock form they don't pull much at the 6-7k rpm. its just like a grand national that is completely stock. they will run a mid to high 14 because they don't get enough boost to make their real power.Originally posted by CrazyHawaiian

not only that, but i thought the AWD caused alot of parasitic drag at higher speeds. those cars are pretty quick from 0-60, but after that, the AWD slows them down. this is why the 3000GT TT only runs high 13s

Weight is a big thing... the 3000 GT should run a low 13, but it weighs 3700 lbs... that is why it's not so great... there is also more drivetrain loss and clutch slippage, 0-60 and snow are the AWD's only perks... but I love doing donuts in the snow, and you cant throttle steer as well w/ AWD...Originally posted by tpivette89

Edit: Perhaps you should look into some better tires... sounds like you need more traction.
Well it doesn't matter how much I practice, I can't get a quick launch without going sideways spinning. I don't know much about tires but I have Dunlop Qualifier GT's (275/60/R15) with decent tread left.
I am about to replace my front tires so if somebody can suggest a good all around street choice for all four corners I would appreciate it. (under 500$ for the set plz)
Also I was absolutely shocked when I was barely gaining on him once I got traction. I expected to reel him in fast, but I guess my induction is holding me back. (some old Edelbrock intake and a Q-Jet, unfortunately don't know exact specs on enigne as the previous owner seemed to have lost the shop's build sheet
)
Anyways thanks for the responses, I will definetely go to the track within the month hopefully with new rear tires and the few mods I did and see what I can do.

if you don't plan on doing some autocross then why not get a drag radial like the bf goodwrench drag radials or some nittos for the rear. then get some cheaper tires for the front.

I have a friend with a WRX. His car is wicked fast to 80 mph then it just plane falls on its face. I run a 5.6 0-60 and he pulls about a half a car leng to 60 then its all over. I pass him like he's sitten still. Its like they hit a brick wall or somthin.

Aren't the WRX's almost 10 second cars anyway? I've heard they're wicked cars man... I bet even if you launched well you would've had trouble with him.

Supreme Member
LOL!!!!!!!!! 10 seconds thats a good one.
You would think 10's the way subaru hyped them all up. They run a 14.4 and 5.4 0-60 when you beat on them real hard. Thats car&drivers test so that was with a pro driver.

I'd like to see Evan Smith run one, he may see 13s powershifting it and running as hard as possible!!

Hey 5.0mustang drop me an e-mail I'd like to talk to you about your car. I have a friend that is in the middle of his 5.0 buildup in his sn 95 and we are woundering how far you can push the stock FI setup. Looks like yours is pretty stout so I'm sure you could help.

their transmissions aren't all that strong. to pull the 5.5 0-60's they advertise you must do a 5k clutch drop on them and after you do a couple of those you'll have a nice stripped gear on your hands. same thing for powershifting they just can't take the abuse. i'm sure you could possibly see a 13.99 but that would be the end of your tranny. the awd just hooks too good and the trannys are just too weak.Originally posted by 5.0mustang
