Does anybody know what I just whooped?

I was driving to my girlfriends house today in my Trans Am. I was trying to take it easy cuz my distributor was spark knocking like a mother#$%^. Anyway, this guy pulls up to me at a light, in an 80's Monte Carlo lookin thing (Monte Carlo, Buick)???? Anyway, this thing is a boat but it has 442 stickers on the sides, so I'm thinking "crap, he's gonna whoop me in my little 305".

The light turns green and I gun it. I left it in drive, and just gunned it. I caught sweet traction (thanks new tires!) and I was gone. Heard my car shift into 2nd with a nice tire chirp, and up to about 60 mph I had like 3 car lengths on him. Needless to say he was pretty pissed and catches up to me and guns it from about 45 to 70. He rolls right into an area where cops just swarm, so I didn't persue. But I was pretty happy with my T/A.

By the way, does anyone know what that was???? I'd like to know.

Steve

A mid '80s Olds 442 with more than likely a 307 4bbl olds motor.

Didn't they also make an OHC 4 cyl. 442 that ran pretty well? There's a guy that runs in our points class with one (I think) that runs 15's almost bone stock.

I think you are referring to the Olds Calais 442 of the early 90's. It was a front wheel drive car equiped with a manual 5-speed and the High Output 2.3 DOHC 4-cylinder QUADFOUR. The horsepower rating was 180 hp peaking somewhere over 6000 rpm and the torque was 160 ft.lbs. peaking around 5200 rpm. I think they are cabable of high 15's, and maybe mid 15's, in the 1/4 mile in stock form.

As for the original car in question, an 80's Olds Cutlass 442, they wouldn't be any faster than a Monte Carlo SS of the time.

I know the olds was available with a 307 until at least 86, but I think the other G body cars got a 305.

Well the 442 sticker tells me its probibly either a 442, or a cutlass supreme w/442 stickers. The "monty carlo ss" makes me believe it is a early to mid 80's model. So there you go. They are really nothing special...A 5.0 w/ 4bbl carb, 4 speed tranny, and dual exhaust(hence the name 442)

Actually it's 4 barrel, 4 speed and dual exhaust. The mid 80's 442 still lived up to it's name.

I had an 84 Cutlass Supreme with the 307 4 barrel with dual exhaust. It was pretty quick once the emission restrictions were eliminated. Fastest I had it going was 9.1 1/8 after cam and head work. Gave it to my brother and 2 weeks later he totaled it. (Loser)
