everyone does something stupid like going as fast as their car will take them but realize every time you do that you are always risking more lives than your own no matter how empty the road appears

I dont know how it is in other states, but in OK, the odds of them getting you with an aircraft is very low. Maybe a helicopter, but that is also unlikely. It all depends on how long you have been running. IMO, the first 3 minutes are the most important if your trying to get away...if after 3 minutes, you haven't lost the cops...pull over.

Lol that's cute, but yeah I do actually know. I never quote unquote ran from the cops, but I tried to leave their presence before they turned lights on. I used to live in L.A, so I've evaded the law once or twice hehe ;-). but it's a lil easier to do that here in OKC than L.A

i wont do more then 10 over anytime anywhere. yes i have done 110+ mph on the freeway late at night, and surprisingly it felt pretty damn good, but i will never do it again. thrills are nice and all, but i like sunlight and life and all the stuff also, plus i am not going to hurt anybody in my family

i've been up to 110 in my camaro. plenty fast enough for the roads around here.

the couple times i raced on the street, i'd run to 50, then shut down.

after losing two friends to a car wreck 2 years ago, i'm a lot different behind the wheel. i don't speed as much as i used to.

i'll still wind the car out occasionally, just to see what she'll do.

but nothing blatantly stupid.

4am on the highway, nothing in view... pedal went to floor and I'm guessing the speed hit about 120. mmmmmm fun 140 mph in a Viper on a track, even more fun.

in light of the death of GTA paladin, i'd say any street racing is too much,

Take it to the track, you know it makes sense.

yes, I understand that, but all due respect, when I was 16 my good friend died when he flipped his car doing 110. It hurt, and it hit home, but, I admit, I still race on the streets. And yes, I think we've all been beat over the head with the dangerous, but quite frankly, I only go to the track when I do something to my car to see a difference in times. As far as racing at the track to just race...that doesn't provide that much excitement too me. Maybe it's because I am still realatively young compared to most of the old timers on here. (no offence lol) Maybe it's because it's addicting and an extreme rush...

130 in OKC? How do you miss all the pot holes?!?!

Personally, I don't want a dead family on my conscience, nor do I want to end up bunking with bubba in the State Pen, so I keep my speeds reasonable. Not that my stock T/A could make 130 anyway... I guess its all about the risk your willing to take knowing the possible consequences.

FWIW, I believe the pics of the deer came from an accident where the deer hit the Durango from above. Apparently, it was scared by a passing car and jumped off an overpass onto the Durango that was driving below. You can see the overpass in the first pic.

yeah doing 135 in OKC is kinda dangerous. I found that the turnpike to Tulsa is very suitable to do those speeds, plus there is hardly ever traffic there at all. Just mind the toll booth. Ever past a toll booth doing 120? LOL....

If you qualify a race as going 20-30 over the speed limit then I do race rarely. Above that and it's almost definite I will not.

I have gone 140mph in my '97 twice and 135mph four times. I grew up since then.

I am a firm believer that people are gonna drive "crazy" like I once did until you kill yourself, you kill someone innocent, you nearly kill yourself, you nearly kill someone innocent or your grow up. I finally grew up, and it took too damn long when I reflect on how I could have hurt someone.

Know this, I'm not including those who go whatever speed or race on abandoned roads, some do it "right" as compared to others.

Oh yeah, I'm an old fart, too, (31) and a father of two so my "crazy days" were before marriage and children.

How fast is too fast? This depends on 3 things: the road, the equipment, and the driver.

Lets make some comparisons...
1.is it safe to go 70mph on a skateboard?...NO. Why? lack of proper equipment. Most of us routenly go 70 or faster on the highway in our cars, but feel entirely safe.

2. Is it safe to drive at any speed if you are drunk/stoned...NO. Why? that one would be the driver. Think about it, some people are just better drivers, quick reflexes, good eyesight, and the abilitly to concentrate.

3. Is it safe to go 70mph on a snow covered road...NO. Why? thats self explanitory.

Back to 1. My car came with a factory performance suspension. It now has sfs's, bigger sway bars, a cross member, and 245zr16 tires on all 4 corners. This car feels just as stable at 140 as it does at 70. I am confident in my equipment up to that speed for now. With upgraded brakes, hp springs, struts, and shocks, I would feel comfortable doing 160. Would I go that fast in a stock suspended thirdgen...NO WAY

As for the road conditions...that is common sence, with 3 open lanes, and no cars for miles on a straight interstate late at night, I would feel comfortable doing that same 160.

Have you guys ever heard of the cannonball runs. In the 70's there were five transcontinental races from New Your to California. The fastest time recorded was 32 hours 51mins. That car had and average speed of 87mph(that is from the total time and miles, including numerous stops for gas.) Nobody was ever serously injured from this event, and very few cars were wrecked. Speeds of 170mph were reached on public roads, but nobody was hurt.
It just goes to show that with proper equipment and competent drivers(the road conditions were not always that great), what may seem like total disregard for safety turned out harmless.

Sorry its long I know, but thats how I feel on the matter.
I'll end it with a quote: "Don't be stupid, and nobody will get hurt"
Nick

hey 92superman i totally agree with you
it all depends on the capabilities of the driver and equipment
the road conditions have to be right also

and no im not one of the old guys, im only 17
but i have respect for my car and other peoples safety so i dont race or speed excessivly very often

Yeah those cannonball runs were bad ***. I seen some of the cars that ran that. Anyone know what that annual top speed competition right outside of vegas is called?

I'm very young (17) and scared straight from reading this post. I've never raced on the highway, or light to light. I do race though. It has to be one of the biggest rushes I've ever received. But, when i race it's only in the industrial park and when the 2nd shift leaves. Not only when they leave, but WELL after they leave. I'm talking like 2-4 am and only if the road is dry. The fastest we go is about 110 at total maximum. Personally, I can't get my car over 100 on the 1/4 mile. I know there is no way to be 100% safe. but i think these are the best conditions to race if you ever have a need to, which i do about twice a month. Got to show those annoying bumble-bee cars who's boss.
