It doesn't really bother me that much. I mean the name is general anyways so that's why I think it is used as slang. I mean Nitrous Oxide Systems that can pretty much explain any nitrous setup. I know it's a company name and all but it is also short for a basic way of describing a nitrous setup.

I'm with you on this one Mark. NOS = company name. Pronounced Naws if you say it phonetically. When we have a modification made by TPiS, we don't say it "Tipis". You're right on.

Ya it drives me nuts when people call it NOS. A friend of mine who is a couple years younger goes crazy on the ricers in his school when they tell him they're getting a honda and putting NAAAWWSS on it. He makes them feel dumb by explaning the whole thing to them while going nuts.. i've trained him well

It does bother me a little, but how many times have you called your portable tape player a Walkman (even if its not from Sony)?
Or how often have you asked for a Kleenex (instead of a tissue)?
I'm sure there are many more examples out there, but the sad fact of the matter is most kids (I'm only 19, but I think everyone knows what I mean ;-) are going to say NOS.
It just rolls off really well, kind of like Y2K. I remember my speech teacher back in HS telling me how Y2k went from the front of your mouth to the back (in terms of what part of your anatomy makes the sound). NOS doesn't do the same thing, but it does roll off extremely well.
What it all boils down to is I'll usually let it slide...
...unless it's a *****

I'm gonna agree with afterburn on this one for the most part. Its a proprietary eponym. An eponym is a general term used to describe from what or whom something derived its name. Therefore, a proprietary eponym could be considered a brand name (product or service mark) which has fallen into general use. Its like Coke, Kleenex, Xerox, Ploaroid, Popsicle, White-Out, Jell-O, Velcro, Hi-Liter, Saran Wrap, Scotch Tape, Band Aid, Vaseline, Q-tips, Walkman...the list can go on and on. NOS was one of the first to become really popular; its similar enough to the chemical formula of N20, therefore people easily associate it with nitrious oxide. Its that simple...it shouldn't really bother anyone if you know you're right you're right either way who cares.
looks like we have a linguistic expert

Grammarists also include ways of increasing vocabulary (adding new words and morphemes to a lexicon). Words can be coined ourright, limited to only the coiners imagination and phonetic constraints of the English language.
Which means that ricers and the media (F&F) have coined NOS the brand name as a generic word as (stated by SC82TA). We all know that ricers have very vreative imaginations.

i very much agree!!
Maybe it would be like Kleenex or Walkman if the company Nitrous Oxide Systems called themselves that...
But they dont.
If you call them they answer the phone "Thank you for calling N, O, S, this is..." (trust me
)
They do not say "thank you for calling NAWWWSSZZ"

85transamtpi has it right!!!
A friend of mine sells nitrous for N.O.S. and he has and never will call it "naws". He has been around this stuff for many years, and he makes fun of kids for it! His deisel truck (low 9s, one of the fastest Diesels out there) has two bottles, and when asked about "naws", he tells everyone he doesn't run it! He runs nitrous!!!

Its not really marketing that caused the term to explode (it has already been established that NOS has never called/marketed themselves as NAWSS)
it was a movie that a bunch of people saw...
hmm, any guesses?

Why don't you all just go buy a kleenex, and wipe the sand out of your ......
In all seriousness, though, I don't give a rat's *** what someone calls it. If I think that they don't understand the difference, then they will lose some credibility, but that's usually not the case anymore. Call it NOS, nitrous, spray, giggle gas, or anything else that gets the point across.
Chris

Except for the fact that NOS themselves doesn't pronounce it "NAAWS". They say "N.O.S.", right?

The best thing about F&F is, when I see it, it makes me want to work on my car!!! NOS, can get on my nerves, but look at the people that use that term. Can you blame them for being alittle slow??
And mark you are a post *****, but by now we have learned to live with it!! And yes there are times when no matter how we look at it you are right. But I think if you sprayed a 250 shot of NOS on your motor you could have a 10 second car! Then you could be kewl!

I guess it just bothers more of the ole' skool.
Calling N.O.S.....naawwsssszz, is like when they rename your local venue or stadium or ballpark. It just ****ing bug's. Like Jack Murphy stadium is now "Qualcomm" stadium..... get real, it will always be JACK MURPHY.
Just because your new to the game doesnt mean you have any rights impress us with your 'cool guy new terms' that have been around since BEFORE you were born.
Sure a hotdog is a hotdog, but if you want to be generic, take your generic @ss somewhere else.......it has been the ole' skool that has brough this sport/hobby/insanity to where it is, and you really think a four cylinder mentality is really going to make us listen to people that couldnt pay attention to the slightest detail?..........
So take your 'naawwsszzzz', your 'piping', your 'pop-off valves', your generic-generalized though process and go back to watching your Hollywood mis-interpretations of what the real world is about.
I'm not flaming imports, I know quite a few import tuners with some 'quick' rides and even they know whats up.....N.O.S. .........the acronnym

Calm down "ole Skooler"
We need to try to keep the insulting to a minimum level here.
NOS is one thing...NAWS is another.
NOS is old school terminology.
NAWS is Rice terminology.
I call nitrous NOS. Others call it NAWS, either way we both know what we're talking about.

For those of you that don't have a clear memory, people were calling it NOS (not N.O.S.) well before the FNF. It wasn't a big deal until afterwards. The only reason it sticks out in conversation now is becuase everyone has put so much emphasis on it in all these forums.
And FWIW, I think I'll call it NOS so people underestimate me. I like to be underestimated!

I still don't like it, IMO its one of the things you do AFTER you have a strong motor, either that or a supercharger. there is acouple neons around here running 300hp shots ona stock motor. some have lots there motors for doing that but yet the neon group does it. Morons!!
I blame F&F for this
F&F makes Nitrous out to be some miracle push of a button that cannot be beaten (unless you have an "old school" car with a blower...charger). So now everyone puts a 50 shot in their stock motors and thinks they are getting the same shot as the ones in the movies.
Bottom line is that I now don't ever want nitrous until I have tapped my engine of all its N/A HP.
Our attitude: Horsepower then looks
***** Attitude: Looks then thinking they are fast, then N2O when they get beat by a primer gray 86 with a busted headlight.
