85 IROC vs 2001 WS6
Hey guy, i'm new here, but you all seem to know quite a bit about these f-bodies. So i've got a question for you.
My friend in his WS6 wants to race my modded IROC. I just put this engine in and don't know how much power it's making. Think I should go for it?
Here's the car buildup:
former LG4
355 - L69 air cleaner(k&n) - rebuilt stand alone q-jet - weiand action plus(egr blocked) - edelbrock rpm heads - comp cams 280H magnum (230 degrees @ .05 / .480" lift) - crane gold roller rocker (1:6 ratio exhaust) - carter M6900 fuel pump - stewart water pump - hedman shorties w/ y-pipe (2.5" collector) - 3" hermoff cat - flowmaster american thunder 3" catback - auburn posi w/3.73s - rebuilt T-5 - stock ignition and distributor - clutch fan - stock ECM and chip
KYB AGX struts - Koni adjustable rear shocks - boxed lower control arms - herb adams panhard bar - suspension techniques springs
BFGoodrich comp TA Vr4s 245/50 R16 all around

I think he's got you beat. Especially if he's got an auto. Ever try launching a 6 speed LS1 car?

Manic Z should be quite capable of low 13s with traction.
Aluminum heads, very nice cam, 3:73s, t-5, full exhaust, not too sure about that carb though, if worked over can perform nicely.

A friend of mine with a similar setup except a single plane intake and a 327 with an XE284 cam (close) ran around 13.4's with street tires and 12.6's with slicks. That is definately LS1 country.

That this will be a driver's race if it's a stick.
I got a carb for ya
if you want mine I have a 600 CFM Holley
PN: HLY-0-80451
The holley that passes the sniffer test. electric choke, PCV, EGR etc.
all you will need to do is pay me 30 bucks and I'll pay shipping. The only thing it needs is a little rebuild. it ran better than my Street avenger I have now. i have a fuel slosh problem with my SA and i stall when my brakes are hit hard. prolly from fuel coming out of the vent tubes and causing an instant rich condition (ie flooding). i would put it back on but it is too small for my setup.

thanks...
Thanks for the guess' guys. So most of you figure that i'm probably pushing around 350 horses.
I think i'll go for the race. It's all in fun after all.
Two quick questions though;
1. Should i cut out the 2.5" collector pipe in the hedman y-pipe and put in a 3" ?
2. My timing is set to stock specs which i beleive is 0 degrees BTDC. Should i advance my timing with this engine? Also, should i upgrade my chip? Or do both?
Oh, and one more thing...is an electric fan worth any power over my clutch fan?

well i get my top power with it four degrees after, ofcorse thats with my settup which isnt as advance as your but many of my friends cars are the same way. good luck with the race.
You said something about a stand alone q-jet but also mentioned the computer as far as timing is concerned I believe. DON'T mix a non computer controlled carb with computer controlled distributer. I would either go to the computer controlled carb and do the mods listed in the tech articles on this site, or put a real aftermarket carb and distributer on there. The computer needs to be all or nothing.

Very good point, I wasn't sure what stand alone meant. That will make a car not run right.

finally raced
Well guys, the race finally happened.
We both went to the track this morning (Sunday), and went at it.
We only got 1 run actually. But anyway, i won.
Just barely.
Mine: 60' - 2.1 sec His: 60' - 2.2
1/4 mile 13.7 @ 102 1/4 mile 13.8 @102
The race was quite intense. Neck and neck the whole way. I couldn't even tell who won when we crossed the finish. We both left a lot of tire smoke on our launches. Not the 60' time i expected with all my suspension upgrades. Oh well.
Oh, by the way, he was a stick too with a borla exhaust. I know our times seem slower than expected, but our dragstrip is at a very high altitude. I'll look into the exact numbers. I launched at 3500 rpm because below that, the car feels like a dog, but as soon as it gets over....awesome.

I think you can win. But...It will most definitely be a close race.
