3.1 v.s. 305 TBI

alright don't go throwin up the signs, last night i was with my cousin who has a 3.1 and my uncle who has a 305 and we both punched it from a roll and my cousin took the 305! then they went at it two more times from a stop, the v6 took one and the 305 the other. the only thing wrong with the 305 was a small exhaust leak

I'd say there are some more problems with that 305 other than a exhaust leak

i don't... completely
i've beaten a 305tbi clean from zero...
he has his top notch stock... the only problem he has on his car is his door... and interior...
so i believe that its completely possible... doesn't mean nothing is wrong witht that 305tbi

i've beaten a 350 before... but that thing had a lot of problems... i mean a lot

i will also say that the 305 had ALOT more problems than an exhaust leak. Either that or the driver didnt know how to drive to well. but in any case, good kill for your cousin.

LOL, i am his cousin. I was just about to post about this, then i saw andrew already had.

Everything he said is correct. I even had 3 people in my car. No Bs here, this is the second 305tbi that i have beaten.

I took him pretty bad from the roll. The first time from a stop i had him, and the second time he got the jump.

When i say i took him pretyy bad, i should say that he was at my rear bumper, but never got any closer. So i didn't walk him, but made him look bad.

The car was looked over by me and another mechanic when he bought it. It does have an exhaust leak, other than that the car ran well. My car has 112,000 miles on it, and his has 129,000.

He just bought the car, so i assume there is a margin or error there also.

Either way, i won twice. I would be interested in racing another 305tbi if anyone is interested. I am curious to see what would happen

thanks again andrew, i hope he doesn't see this, he might be mad we are spreading this over the internet.

Oh yeah, and i should add that his car is bone stock, right down to the paper air filter.

I think it hurts the egos of 305 tbi(stock) when they lose to a v6. Do a search, i am not the only one that has done this.

Once he starts modding, i will get walked like a french poodle.

BTW, i told him the first thing he should do is a mjor tuneup. I also suggested an open element, would that be a nice improvement for him?

i'd be more than happy to race you any time, the only thing non-stock on my car is the k&n air filter. How close are you to st. louis? It would have to be soon, my car is recieving a new cam, intake, exaust and gears in about a month-2 months time.

Too bad you dont live close to me or I would show you how bad a 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 would lose to a completely stock 305 tbi. I know how to drive and mine is in good condition. If you are still interested you are welcome to drive to virginia and we can run em

oOoOo
i'd so love too
i haven't lost to a 305 tbi yet...
and i really wanna go up against some1 that should know how to run it...
that would be fun...
why did you have to live at virginia!
we could've had fun!!!
i am a better driver than the tbis i raced but nonetheless... 2 of them were in perfect running condition... the other... was extremely questionable...lol

a nasty challenge for me would be a 3.8L v6... the new ones... none of that mid 90s mustangs...

gosh... i had to think of mustangs...
my car is in the shop... and guess what i'm driving until then
a 95 or so 3.8L v6 mustang... white...
the damn thing is slow as heck!

i want to get back into my car and soon...

It really matters little to me. Ive never even come close to losing to a 3rd gen v6 and dont ever think i will either unless heavily, heavily modded, and whats the point in modding a v6 anyways? If that ever happens I'll just go home and jump in the LS1 and redeem myself I would also like to refer you to this post about what would happen if both cars were in good shape and properly driven. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=170011

It seems us v6ers have hit a nerve with the tbi guys. We could argue forever about this.

Maybe all these v6s you guys are beating are in poor condition, i see no mention of that, only talk of the 305 being in bad condition if it loses.

And like i said before, i can think of at least four other members on the board that have claimed this. I said claimed because like we all know, this is the internet, and more sh*t flies around here than in the monkey cage at the zoo.

I looked for my thirdgen for almost 2 years, i drove about 20 or so on that time span, most of them 305 tbis. I was not impressed. Maybe because i dont have the mentality that it's a v8 so it must be fast.

Well i guess you can believe me if you want, but i have been working on cars for almost 14 years, and i know a car in good tune/shape when i see it.

I will continue to beat 305tbis, and the 305tbis guys will continue to deny it possbile.

Happy racing

so far i know for sure that a stock tbi has no chance against me top speed... but why care about that... cuz thats just plain dangerous... i've had enough of that...
roll same...

its the launch that i'm sure a good driver can give me a run for my money in his/her tbi...
the race i had... took him clean... never had a chance... launch was perfect...
but once again...
tbis will eat v6s
v6s will eat tbis

i upgrade my v6 cuz i have something to prove down here... so i do it... yea i have a few things going on down here... so gotta show them whats up...
that a thirdgen conquers..

Every time i see one of your posts about you beating someone, I just laugh, especially the ones about a v6 third gen, be it 2.8, 3.1, or even an early 4th gen 3.4 absolutely raping a 305 tbi, carb, tpi, or whatever, it aint happening. When you floor it and the other person doesn't thats not called racing. When you are in perfect running order with mods and claim to beat a stock crappy running 305 tbi with 300,000 miles on it thats about to puke, thats not even comparible and also pitiful for you to claim the win. No hard feelings though. Don't take this as a flame, but if you came across a third gen v8 of any displacement or type of fuel delivery thats in descent shape, you would lose.

I hope you aren't talking to me. I never said anything about raping a 305. I explained how i won, he never got any closer than my back tire.

I have no reason to make this up, and i am not trying to start anything. No hard feelings.

Anyways, this little engine is on borrowed time, i am about to order my harness from painless for my L98. Boy, that will be a night and day difference, can't wait:lala:

its funny to me cuz in the end its funny how my friend is behind me and hes the one i raced recently...
i know you don't believe...
somehow i think you really need to grow up...
get over it... we won... doesn't mean we're quick..
16s is crap
thats why i think tbis suck... v6s suck just as much...
minivans can beat us now a days...
so grow up
get pissed off all you want that you spent money on a slow v8
where as i'll continue knowing i'm spending money on a slow v6

75lbs-ft of torque more.........

I still wanna race a V6 to see first hand--my car is not running the best but---if it beat me--no problems, I can admit defeat

pontiac didn't just put L03 v8's in the cars for shlts and giggles...if they weren't at least a small step up from the v6's they wouldnt have bothered

Thats true.....but it's really too bad they put that POS motor in at all (absultley no change form the pick-up trucks specs)---shoulda been all TPI V8's.

I just laugh at how both these guys knew each other, and both raced, and neither one beat another's pants off. But hey, go figure. It's just how the engine/cool ratio goes:

2.8/173ci = not cool
3.1/189ci = not cool
305 TBI = not cool
305 Carb = not cool
305 TPI = somewhat cool
350 Carb = cool
350 TPI = cool
350 TBI = cool
350 with cooked bearings = cool
350 with bent rods = cool

Show anyone making fun of a v6, and I can show another 5 messages in which a 305 Carb/TBI is made fun of. Does it make sense? Nope. But that's the way it is. And most of those posts making fun of 2.8/3.1/305's are made by posers who couldn't tell the difference between a cam bearing or a rod bearing! Gearheads usually don't make fun of motors. Which category do you fall into, 25THRSS? Seeing as how this is the "Theoretical and Street Racing" forum, I wonder what the percentage of gearheads vs posers is in here.

Granted, there's also 2.8/3.1 posers who watch the fast & furious and think their car runs 12 second quarter miles- but then again, there's also 305/350 posers who talk the talk but can't even change a sparkplug. It's both sides of the coin, fellas; just depends on who's flipping and who's calling.

Oh and if you guys want to race, take it to the racetrack. Nothing settles an argument like a real timeslip. That's probably why everyone guesses at their 1/4 mile times instead of actually running the 1/4 mile and scanning their slip in.

You ask what catagory I fall into? I am currently in the process of completing a heads, cam, intake, oil pump, headers, spark plugs, throttle body, torque converter, and shift kit on my LS1. I am doing all of this by myself at the same time. Ive grown up around cars and racing and no offense to you but I prolly know quite a bit more than you do. I can do just a tad bit more than install stereo equipment and a shifter into a car I should be a solid 11 second car and that is being conservative. I am not a poser and I never said my third gen 305 tbi was fast, i just said that it would kick a v6 car's ***. Does that answer your question?

Alright, I will definitely call to this whole topic. When I had a bone stock 305 TBI, I went to the track and ran up against a 3.1 firebird. I took him by almost a second and a half (16.3 to 17.6) so I don't believe that a 3.1 could take a 5.0 TBI unless something was seriously wrong with the 5.0. The 3.1 I drove had hardly enough torque to do a burnout while my TBI could do it anyday. The only advantage the 3.1 has is gears, but that won't help that much. That's all I have to say.

you guys may laugh at me or whatever when I say this, but I think my 3.1 corsica could take a 3.1 firebird, mostly because of the weight difference. My car only weighs like 2700lbs. Dont get me wrong, I am not by any means saying my car is fast, cuz I know its not.

Okay, i see his thread has upset a few people.

Call bs all you want, it happened the way i posted. I dont know why i won. I did state that he had just bought the car like 2 days earlier.

So believe me or don't, it really doesn't matter, people who know me here know i have never been one to make things up.

I guess if you post somethin someone doesn't agree with, it must be BS.

All I know is that every V6 f-body that I've ever driven, and I've owned two of them, feel like they seriously lack *****. Every one that I've raced against with my L03, I've conquered. Why? Not because my L03 is all powerful, but because I have better torque off the line, slightly better hp, and because I can go through the gearbox like a pro Don't hate. Remember we're all in this together, and I've still beaten many a civic in my old 2.8 and 3.1 RS's.

No hate here. I just posted what happened and everyone got bent out of shape.

I know we are all in this together, i just think a mutual respect is in order.

No hard feelings to anyone, its all in good fun.

(laughs) If you're in the "process" of changing the spark plugs, then either we know as much as each other, or I know more then you (considering I already installed a shift kit into both trannies; the second one installed by myself). I've done all my own work too, and I can't remember ever mentioning spark plugs as a mod, but hey, whatever floats yer boat. I assume you were just mentioning -everything- you were doing.

Like I said, it depends on who flips the coin and who calls it.

[edit] 92White, my '86 with 180,000 miles on the clock ran a 17.1, which beats the 3.1 you raced. Guess that's BS then, since I have a 2.8! How could a 2.8 be faster then a 3.1? So strange.

Nowhere in that statement did i even say the word mod. I was simply listing everything I am doing. If you feel that because you installed a shift kit into your car that qualifies you as knowing as much or more than me then alright. Well since you seem to know so much seeing as how you do your own work and installed a shift kit into your car and know how to change the spark plugs then how about you come help me out on this swap i'm doing. On second hand nm, I dont want anything messed up. By the way, you say both trannys, does that mean the first one you installed broke, lol. Probably from the massive power of your 2.8 liter v6. :lala:

well boys dont think just cuz its got a v8 in it it could beat a v6 cuz my bro has a 92 cavalier in mint!.....5 spd he raced my bud with an 85 z and my bro took his *** stock for stock!...but he beat him by bout 2-3 cars man!....then my buddy slapped on some hedders and my bro put in a cold air and the z beat my bro by bout a bumper length!

just thought i would stick that in there not that im stickin up a for a v6!!

I don't try to argue, but when someone calls me a poser i think i have the right to defend myself. I mean come on guys, do you realize what you are saying? Ofcourse just because it's a v8 doesnt mean it's going to beat a 4 or 6 cylinder. There are plenty of 4 and 6 cylinder cars out there that are fast, but when you compare a v6 f body versus a v8 f body the v8 wins hands down. There is a reason why the v8 was an option and the v6 was the base engine. Get what I'm saying? If you compare a v6 f body in tip top shape and a v8 f body in tip top shape who wins? Excluding the TTA ofcourse. Enough said.

DUDE! get this through your head just because its a V8 doesnt mean its fast, the 305 and 3.1 are both slow cars stock with a few mods a 305 can easily take a 3.1 and yes most of the time 305's would win but like i said be4 just because its a V8 dont mean S**T

As I said in the above post just because it is a v8 doesnt mean it will beat a 4 or 6 cylinder, but when compared to a v6 f body it does mean it will win. This is talking about all stock ofcourse. Take a 6 cylinder supra versus a v8 305 tbi camaro, the supra wins, or a 6 cylinder NSX versus a 305 tbi camaro, the NSX wins, or a 4 cylinder awd turbo talon versus a 305 tbi, the talon wins. Now take a 6 cylinder 2.8 or 3.1 v6 f body versus a 305 tbi v8 camaro and the 305 tbi v8 camaro will win hands down.

You sure you wanna do that? Thats fine with me. By the way, a 3.8 is a complately different beast than a 2.8 or 3.1, but anyways, sure if i'm ever there i'll be glad to race you.
