is this possible?
is this possible?
in my area the race scene is getting pretty popular. so i asked a guy i know who had the fastes car in the area hes said the mustang guys had build a completely legal mustang that ran 8.8 in the 1/4. is that even possible ? i know it s but making it street legal?

I completely believe a street driven car can run 8's, but street legal? If that mustang is a fox body or newer, it has to have all of its smog equipment still attached. It has to meet noise pollution guidelines which i think would be nearly impossible for an 8 second car to do, then again he could run the quitest exhaust he wants on the street and uncap at the track. There is a big difference between street driven and street legal.

forced induction?
a.k.a. turbo
think about it.
most the time you can keep you smog equipment, it makes the exuast quieter, can run some sort of semi mild cam (boost doesn't like big cams), could still get enough gasmilage to make it worthwhile to drive it on the street.

. I highly doubt that this guy is telling you the truth, and the engine would have to be a 302 at most (to be considered street legal in a 80's or 90's Mustang) No Big Block's could be used, the 302 was the biggest engine available facotry direct.I highly doubt the truth about the Mustang.

Ask any Mustang faithful about a guy name Lee Howie. Although he doesn't own the car anymore he had a non stroked 306 (just an overbored 302) with a single Precision turbo running 8s. This car average an 8.9 on street tires (DOT rubber) and went 8.95 on the same hot day. The car has gone faster on street tires and on slicks has gone 8.3 at 172 i believe. This car was in Ohio and had plates on it, but did not need to go through emissions.
The motor was a bored over 306, with very strong internals, Trick Flow Heads, Hogan intake, and nearly every other mod known to man. The car did not have Nitrous and ran a 91mm Precision Turbo at 21# of boost.
Not only was the car insanly fast but the only body modification to the car was a 1.5" cowl induction hood, and the parachute, which could have been removed.
You may say this car is not a street car, but he drove the car on the street many times and would cruise out to the street scene every once in a while!
So for all you guys who claim that you need a stroker, with a huge blower and nitrous to even be close, try calling up Lee Howie at his shop and see whats up!

OK Maybe I'm wrong, maybe you can get 8's out of a 302.
But with all of those mods I'll bet that Mr. Howie's Car was not Street Legal. Also here in Wisconsin it isn't a Street Legal car if the car has Over 600hp and I think it takes more than that to get into the 8's
. Yes a little Wisconsin Technicallity saves my ****.

There are quite a few cars that are street legal and running 8's or lower. Voodoo has a 6 sec Dart that is street legal, ran a 9 sec Supra that was running his mouth about all domestics being slow and raped him. Guy has a TT GN running 6's, dont know if it is street legal, but streetable after he removes the parachute, etc. It is extremely common to run into 10 sec domestics that the older guys have, but a 8 sec 1/4 mile would be rather rare. I Would guess that it is more as in the 1/8 than 1/4. Was talking to a guy at a dealership, has a 69 Z-28 with a 350 and alcohol injection and is ran a 10.10 last week. It is probable, but most likely he has forced induction or is on a hefty shot.
there are things that can be removed from the car and still be legal. build up the internals nice and strong to handle lots of boost. even with a cam made for forced induction that was kinda wild it would still be fairly tame compared to a lot of other N/A wild cams out there that are driven on the street. smog equipment.... who said you need to take it off? not all of it weighs that much.
I say it can be done while still using the 302 block

There is a Mustang, the fastest "street legal" Mustang in the world that runs 5.xx in the quarter. NIC, or maybe another Stang guy on here may know this guys name. It is a twin turbo setup with a 306 I believe, but, not positive. Not saying he goes and drives it down Main or anything, but, if he wanted to, he could. And a guy I know that runs a very respectable racing engine company locally is putting together a combo to run 7's in an LX Stang, for the sole purpose of saying he did it and was street legal. Lots of people asked him if it was possible? Simply stated he replied, "Why wouldn't it be?" I agree.
If you get emissions exempt and then get show car insurance, you are limited to the amount of driving you can do on the street, but you can still drive it. When people have cars running 8s and they say they are street legal, what they usually mean is that the car has plates, insurance, head/tail lights, and turn signals. These are all the basic requirements of a street legal car.

This one runs 9.20's and is plated, insured, and driven to work on nice days. It qualified 12th in Phoenix at the PSCA race. It drove 300 miles round trip from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Morrison, Colorado to race an event at Bandemere Speedway. This was done on nitrous through a 331 cid motor the new 408 will run in the high 8's. When we had our shop open we built this car from the ground up. At races I got to meet guys running in much faster cars than this that are very street drivable. That guy Mike Murrilo has a car that is in the high 7's now I think, I know for sure he goes atleast 8's. I think his is turboed, and he likes to cruise it around off the track property looking for victim's. I know Gary Rohe's EZ street powder blue mustang coupe runs 7.95 (YES IN THE 1/4 MILE!) and he does this on nitrous.

Let's put it this way, fast cars are driven on the street, fast cars can be streetable. But cars running 8's in the 1/4 mile are probably not street legal. It doesn't matter what state you are in, Federal law prohibits the removal of emmissions equipment, so if the smog is off the car, it isnt street legal.

And how many times have you heard of someone getting fined for no smog or no cat converter? I know it's a big fine, but, I've personally never heard of anyone even being checked for this. TGO Supporter

Yes, but, like 5.0mustang said, how many cars on this site, or that you know do not have their smog? That was the first thing to go on my '88 when I had it. My current car does, only b/c I haven't installed my exhuast yet. There are very few cars that go street racing where I live that have their smog. Most of the ones that do are stock ricers and the like. But, what the cops don't know can't hurt them.

can't you get smog exemption for show cars or something along those lines?
granted limited drivability
but still can be driven on the street
and hey my 15/16 second car isn't street legal....
lets see.. wouldn't pass smog if I did have the cat... oh yeah did I mention I don't have the 3 cats anymore
... EGR is soon to be removed. the right muffler is kinda falling apart, even if I put a cat on the car being the headers were neve smog certified that wouldn't pass.... so yeah TGO Supporter

actually he's right about the federal emissions thing, there is no exceptions for show cars or otherwise that can be granted for that, but... I still dont think that defines what is street legal. If you cruise around all night on a set of non-DOT slicks and I go out and race you and lose, would you hear me crying that "your car isnt street legal- therfore I shoulda won?" no, I dont think so. It would be different if you trailered your car out to the street races to race me. I got no respect for guys trailering to a street race. Thats like saying "Hey my street car aint a streetcar" also guys that go to "street legal" drags and put the license plates off the trailer or tow rig onto a door slammer race car that hasn't seen the street in years is also foggotry in my book. I think to have a proper "street legal" race class you gotta have 3 things: 1) a long drive to prove the car is streetable with a "no hood lift rule without a judge present", 2) an inspection by a NHRA or other racing sanctioning body to ensure safety and rules compliance, and 3) a highway safety or highway patrol officer safety compliance inspection (not a smog check but safety like :headlights, wipers, dot tires, etc.) any "street legal" race class that doesnt have these things is a joke in my book. the only problem is that other than the possibility that some smaller track is doing it, you cant find such a thing. The race classes are ruled (even the rule making portions of the race class) by the big money racers that get the rules twisted and bent into some sort of prostock with power adder wanna be class. Either way even though the class doesnt exist I am building my car that way. I hope that people will eventually get tired of classes that are formed for "street cars" that eventually within just a few years have the rules twisted to allow these space shuttles we see now in these wanna be street legal race classes. If you dont, or cant drive it then it aint a street car in my book.

I've seen it plenty of times. If you get beat by a guy with slicks, guess what, you lost. As long as he drove it up there. Supreme Member

If I remember correctly and I always do
he had a prototype viper engine. And a lenco transmission.
Man did you see that thing pull on the street wow.
I guess he can afford to build a car like that seeing how he bought a viper in the first place.
Something you guys have to remember is some people say there cars go XX.XX fast. But they're using slicks or power adders.
The fasted street car in Winnipeg right now is a vega.
My dad new the original owner of it. The chassis is custom made. And he runs nitrous.
One of the things that will make your car fly would be the chassis mods. You can weld bars in to make it all track legal. But if its built for racing from the start its gonna move.
Oh well one day I'll be driving a pro stock on the street.
Never let the dream die.

no way for a street legal late model runing in the 8's. see now maybe there is a way to get away with it but technically its not legal. and anyone who thinks you could take a 8sec car back n forth to work in grid lock and drive everyday is nuts. not possible. the stuff required for a 8 sec car wont stand up to everyday traffic. besides the fuel required would be immense. not possible i say.
street legal does not equal daily driver. Yes there are definitely street legal 8 second cars out there. I've never heard nor do I believe there are any 7 second street legal cars out there.
By street legal, I mean that it is smog-legal, and aside from swapping tires, and changing the tune of the car, it won't take any special work to run it into the 7s.

I've seen a few 9 second street legal cars around here during the day. I suppose they could bea daily driver if the owner has that kinda $$ for the excessive gas usage & cost.
How did I know they were 9 second cars? Well they still had their dial times on the window.

I guess street legal all depends on local rules. For instance in Winnipeg if your car is 1997 and up it has to have the cats.
Now as for a car being streetable thats a different story. And I'm sure alot of us givin the chance would take a pro stock out on the street. Mind you, you wouldnt get far but hey it would be fun.
Man parralel parking a dragster must be hard.

I'll bet some money that the dude trailers it to about a mile from the spot and cruises it up to the area. Sure it could be done, but the effort it would take just to make it street legal would almost equal the work effort of finding a truck with a hitch.
How about the the corvette from Ontario that was in GMHTP last year, or maybe longer I can't remember.
It was a solid mid 8 second car that he drove to work everyday when the weather would permit.
It had such items as a full aftermarket stereo including subwoofer in the back. and he was quoted as driving crazy amounts of miles per week, I am talking like daily driver miles just like anyone on this board would drive their silverado's.
His set up was hitting over 1000 HP on the sauce, and obviously he wouldn't drive around pulling N20 all day, but that engine was still putting out like 700 horse N/A out of a small block!!!!
Say what you will, I agree that these 6 and 7 second cars are really pushing the "street legal" aspect, but I will drive my new combo this year to a mid nine second run, and as long as I stay out of the boost, should be cutting 20 MPG on the highway, and I will not be scared to take the car out of town for long trips.
Technology is an amazing thing, just look at the new bugatti EB16-4 running over 1000 B horse power, and it is totally insurable and licensable from the factory. It runs 0-186 MPH in under 14 seconds, with a top speed of 252 MPH.
The future is today people, and the ones who insist you can not run a plated and insured street car to 8 second time slips, are the ones that will be left in the dust. The days of an 11 second chevelle being the " crazy car in town" are long gone.

yeh maybe....... if you have any idea what kinda $$ it takes to get to that level of performance and THEN make it factory reliable for everyday driving id say very very tough. maybe thats the future in areas where the average incomes is 300k yr. and why bring up the new bugati sounds cool but what is it a half million dollars r more lol.

both of them generally use a mild cam.
mild cam helps with being street able
also helps so you don't suck in massive amount of fuel
and I would say it would stand up
also once again there was something shown on TV once about a street legal viper that was running 7's
AND HE WAS DRIVING ON THE STREET
yeh and that viper had a lenco 4 speed. thats not even close to a streetable transmission. no real daily driver 7 or 8 sec cars commute to work every day. i mean sure it may be able to cruise for a little bit but not everyday traffic sorrry pal

In MD the county I used to live in , there's a street legal Vette, older one, like late 60s that runs 9s.
I've heard of a 1stGen street legal Camaro blown str legal that runs 8s.
So, yes, it's possible, but like said, highly unlikely.
And if you're running 8s and go to "street races" , you're an idiot

i think people here are confusing street legal with streetable. street legal is a load of BS especially with a old car. all u nead is lights signals etc. hell even new cars with obdII can get around emmissions bc all they do is scan it for the o2 code to see if u got cats, all u need is o2 simms for the rear 2 if applicable. but streetable as in decent milage low maintance smooth in traffic able to withstande hot summer gridlock and run 8's is immpossible u may meat one of these criterias but not all

I believe it... there is a mid 7 second first gen in Detroit that is "street legal" by legal definition only lol. I think it's got a fuel injected 714 cid motor. makes something like 900 HP and 1100 ft. lbs naturally aspirated, but it comes with a 500 shot. He supposedly gets 5 mpg average thanks to fuel injection lol!
