92 V6 Camaro vs. Grand Am

I own a 1992 Camaro RS with a 3.1L engine. I want to race my friends car. She owns a 1999 Grand Am 4 banger. Who would win this race?

probably you.you have rwd drive so you'll hook easier and i think you might have a weight advantage. theres no replacement for displacement

I say you barely, but somehow I doubt either of these cars will be having traction problems so the fwd/rwd thing really doesn't matter much.

You might be surprised the newer 4cyl are comparable to the older 3.1 in HP. So who knows if yours is in a good state of tune you can probalby take the Grand Am, but if you have a high mileage engine out of tune you'll lose.

A 1999 GA has a 2.4L TwinCam... 150hp stock. You've got a 3.1 with 135-140hp.

I'd say the GA.

The 3.1 probably has more torque and weighs less than the grand am too so hp isnt the only factor.

The v6 camaro probably barely tops 3,100 lbs. I dunno what the grand am weighs but I would bet it's more than the camaro. Aren't they 4 door?

Hmm, it's gonna be close. You probably weigh about the same then and she has 10 more hp than you and you have 25 more tq than her so who knows. Just race and find out.

A grand am is about a hundred pounds lighter. It has 150 hp stock and a newer engine. You have a 3100 pound car with 140 hp and probably a tired engine (due to age) I'd say he's probably going to walk away pretty easy. Sorry to say, I've experienced it and learned that I am not going to try and race the six because there is really not much anything out there you CAN beat. Only older pieces of crap and maybe a toyota echo! Nothing wrong with that though. At least your car is a hell of a lot more bad ***!

Well my winter car is a 1999 grand am with the 2.4 (150hp) and a rare 5 spd. I would say that you would lose. The car is remarkable quick for a 4 door. You will get him off the line no doubt but that lil twin cam really loves to rev and makes some nice power up top for as small as it is.

well, I know there is quite a weight difference but I have a 92 corsica with the 3.1 mpfi, stock it has 140hp and 185 ft lbs of torque, and I have taken a few quad 4's in my time. One of the most feared quad 4's was in the earlier berettas, they put out something like 190hp, and love to rev. I know the newer ones have different cams and such, but they can be woken up pretty easily. I have taken the new Cavalier Z24's and sunfires, the torque of the 3.1 makes a big difference, also my car weights about 2600lbs too, so that makes a difference as well. Actually, the 3.1 mpfi is known to take the 3100sfi's even though the 3100 has more horsepower, it has the same torque. Reason for this is because the 3.1's were mated with a bullet proof 3 speed transmission, and the 3100's have what is often debated the worst transmission ever made by gm, its a 4 speed, I believe its called the 4t60e, but dont quote me on that. I think you may have a chance, if your car is healthy running and all, I at least dont think you will get smoked.

I think you're being a little optimistic when you say taking Quad4s and 3100's. The 3100 is believable, but the Quad4, unless its a SOHC (Quad OHC) and not a DOHC Quad4, or one with an auto, I don't think there's much of a chance.

Im not being optimistic, Im saying I have taken newer cavalier z24's with the quad 4's, automatics. Im not saying I have taken beretta quad 4's or anything like that, but the ones in the newer gm cars arent nearly as quick as the older ones.
