Racin' a Hemi

Ok as soon i get my headers and RA hood put on, i have to race this clown. He has the new dodge ram hemi 5.7l 1500 stock. I have an 88 ta that will run high 13,s(on slicks) before i got ram air and headers. hopefully with these it will be a little faster. Anyway i did not want to race a truck but this guy insisted that his brothers hemi truck will easily outrun my GTA. does anyone have an idea what these trucks run(e.t) and has anyone raced one yet?

I saw one run at the track up here. It was running 16.4 or something like that. It was in the 16's, thats all I remember. They're big heavy trucks, they aren't made to drag race, I wish people would understand that. Now if that motor was in a RWD car.....that could be fun

I raced one in my 86 IROC. I have 190,000 miles on the LG4, stock 700r4, and 3.23 rear end without posi.... I am pure stock, and i edged him out. I ran 16.53 and he ran a 16.67....so if you are in the 13's and he is stock, itll be a walk in the park. good luck and keep us posted.

so it must be overrated at 375 hp. A chevy truck with a 5.3 and 285 hp will go 16s right? dodge sucks.

I don't know what my 5.3 truck runs but I recently made some ignorant bastard look stupid in one of those big bad hemi rams.

I would hope any of us could beat a Dodge hemi RAM. The base weight of the RAM1500 4x4 is 5200lbs. I have a friend who just bought one and thinks it is the fastest thing on the road. Sure he may have more horsepower than I have out of my 88 GTA but he is carring 2000lbs of extra weight.

Well, this guy wants to bet 500 dollars on this race. He says he has a chip in it (oooh) and it will surely win. We will see. I will see him on tuesday and make arrangements to take his money. Is this guy that stupid or is there any way he could possibly win. I know it does NOT have super, turbo or juice assistance. Sounds too good to be true.

That's funny. That sounds just like an import guy when they think they can still beat you.

Some people see only the max HP or #ft. of a particular vehicle and think it tells the whole story. What these people don't realize is that the curve is more important than the max. In the case of trucks, weight is a huge issue. It's almost like comparing the weight of a third-gen to a Saturn coupe. My friend has a 4-door Saturn that weighs 2300 lbs, so w/127 HP, and his best run is 16.77. 127HP, that's it. Maybe you should remind your friend about the weight issue before taking his money.

Or maybe not.

Point made Gunny... But at least the import guy has some areodynamics unlike a RAM1500. Unless the Dodge guys think that big grill reduces drag.

wow those are by far better times tan I thought the dodge hemis would do. I had a few try to race my beater car (90 grand am 2.3 H.O. 5-speed) I mean I smoked them by so many cars I had to wait for them at the next light. they never try again when they can barly see the car from where they are

we saw one at a parking lot and asked if it was a hemi so he put it in rev. and squeeled them then he put it in drive and could not even get a chirp we all laughed so he rolled up his window

I saw this kid today and asked if he still wanted to race and apparently his brother( the trucks owner) had gotten it through this kids head that the truck would not stand a chance. I thought he'd never learn, anyway this kid copped out and saved himself $500 and some humilation.
Its too bad though I wanted one more kill before I sold the car
Oh well.

Um, FYI, Regular cab 2WD Hemis have no problem hitting high 14s, with the 2WD quads in the low/mid 15s. Even 4WD quad 1500are hitting high 15s, sounds like you guys have seen some 2500 Quadcab 4x4s, these do run in the 16.4 range, but are much heavier than a 1500. Here is a video of a Quad cab Hemi with 20s, only mod is a muffler, running a 15.3. http://www.geocross.org/video/tundra...ra_race_01.mpg

The one I raced in my truck was a 2WD short bed. No way it would break 14's.

Worst I've seen is a low 15. Maybe it wasn't broken on, or possibly not a Hemi????

There are peoples various times, there are a few mid 15 second RCs, but they are all not broken with horrible 60 fts. If I didn't know better,i'd think I was driving LOL.

those things are pretty quick...other day I was driving through traffic and one of em hemi ext cabs floored it right in front of me in the right lane, some ugly girl trying to show off , so for fun I floored it too and pulled right up past her but I couldnt quite floss the gap between her and the car in front of me, so I had to let off. But Id still say you have nothing to worry about especially from a stop

its a truck not a drag racer, those commercials are so missleading. it does what it was designed to do, pull stuff and hual stuff. now if you where to do a pulling contest he would have u there.

Hemi is overrated eh? hum... ok. For a truck motor, it puts out more power then the LS1 does (at least advertised) and thats a truck motor vs a sports car motor.... Why dont you go tell the next guy in a Hemi Cuda that his car is over rated... then let me know how hard he cold cocked you in the face and then covered you body in an inch of rubber.

its a TRUCK, not a sports car. I have not, and will never see a Hemi truck run 14's stock or anywhere near stock. Unless serious head and cam swap, i dont see how the truck is gunna drop off 2 seconds.

Thoes trucks should run about the same as a lightning due to massive weight on the 1500 cab. The Ram trucks just look so dam big and non-aerodyamic where as the L has more of a streamlined shape... i guess... we are still talking about trucks..

good luck trying to tune the PCM on the dodge. Hot Rod reported that DMC's PCM is very hard to modify and alter to make the best out of the mods... 500hp.. .still gunna run high 13's, maybe even low 14's.

last time i was at the track i saw a Chevy pickup dually with i think the duramax desial dunno if thats the motor it had but you could hear the turbo spoolin up almost at the 1/8 mile , not to sure on the yr but it ran a 14.9 , i think it still had some more to put out though. still impressive for a dually pick up truck.

there are 3/4 ton dodge diesel pickup trucks with stock rims and tires running in the 11's at new england dragway.....

most of them were built by a company called Blue chips diesel performance....their tag line is "we make dodge diesels go real fast" which is the damn truth lol
