Took down a stang....

I was out today getting applications and came up on a '89 or so GT 5.0 convertable 5spd. It sounded bada$$ and had the tips comming through the bumper. We cought a light and he starts revving, i emediatly thought he would be able to take me cuz his car is a lot lighter and sounded very healthy. The light turned green we took off and emediatly put 1/2 car on him and then started pulling away to about 8 cars when i shut it down at about 85-90MPH. He fallowed me and we cought another light together and he was like "damn, i gotta try this again". Nice guy, not they typical mustang driver. Anyhow, the light turned green again and i launched a little better this time and got 1 car on him and then the same result of about 7-8 cars at about 85MPH. I was pretty proud of the T/A today!

No times yet but im planning on hitting somewhere around a 13.8. I have great traction and its an auto so there's not much to worry about. The tires sometimes spin for maybe a foot but grip awesome.

*I have also had some people drive my car and they think it will hit low to mid 13's but im only guessing high 13's. I'll post some times when i get to the track though, hopefully this summer!

I am using a German tire called Fulda. They are Z rated and 245/50/16. Great dry traction but in the rain there not the best.

I would like to see someone come up with a 305 tpi combo. that could take these "stangs" with the same cubic inch. You know, 5.0 vs 5.0. I know weight is a problem, but there ought to be something. I know that stangs and lightnings run pretty good (I hate to admit it), but I hate fords and I get so tired of "mustang this" and "mustang that". The "high-geared" set-up I have (.273), with bolt-on mods, is fairly quick on top-end. I can take alot of cars @ 100+, but most get scared of the sound of glass and tree limbs and back off. I'm a little stupid (probably too much "*****"), so these races are not very acurate.

3rd GEN. all the way!

you can guess my feelings on the stock gears they gave us, why not 3.23's or 3.42's at least GM, why why why? that would give us a better chance with the ponies.

The 305 tpi isnt a bad motor and they can compeat with the 5.0, the problem is that there are more of the peanut cammed autos or Lo3's around than the good model 305 tpis. The 5-speed 305's with the good cam and decent gears can easily compeat stock for stock with a 5.0. The G92 option 305 runs easy mid 14's, the only reason everyone rags on the 305 is because most people have the crappy ones. Granted in the long run the 5.0 ford will go farther with the same amount of mods, but you would be able to keep up with them with close to the same mods.

The reason GM put 305's w/2.73 gears is, during the late 80's, they were trying to come up with a more fuel efficient car with the "sporty" look to attract more buyers. The camaro has a history of poor gas mileage. With this set-up and a 700r4 w/OD you can get as much as 27mph. You and I had options but , it's our fault we didn't chose them.

That's the only reason I haven't changed mine to a lower gear is the mileage. I commute 30+ miles one way to work. If I put 3.73 gears in there, I'll have to stop everyday for gas.

I doubt his car is that much lighter bro, it was a vert after all. Good kill in any case though, it's always fun to beat a stang in a thirdgen.

IROCaholic: I agree that stock for stock a 305 TPI car with a good driver could compete with the 302. The problem is, GM just flat out did NOT make the 305 a race type motor, if you get what I mean. It's noone's fault really, except GM's. Some guys on this site have made some 305's very fast. But for the money you spend on trying to make a 305 fast, you could have made about any other motor(besides a 307 ) run a hell of a lot faster. That's just what I think though.

I think what it is , people like myself have 305's and there's nothing really wrong with the motor (for what it is). I think the best thing (like alot of folks have said) is to add all the bolt-ons that can also go on a 350 or 400 until they either blow the 305 or decide what they actually want to put in there. Until then, I guess we'll keep on crying and asking dumb questions that have already been answered 100 times.

Stop up here sometime and I'll show you one. There's an internally stock motored 305TPI 5spd car here with some bolt ons running dead even with and beating many LT1 guys. Quite impressive for what it is, and most are shocked to find out its a 305 car. Several LT1 and 5.0 boys have lost some cash for both racing and betting its not a 305... Definately a freak 305.

A 305 definately can it just takes a bit more. It is more of an accomplishment to do it in a 305 then a 350 or so. It is just more expensive and takes more work!

For they guy who wanted to see it, go ahead and build it. Would be fun and raise a lot of eyebrows!

There was a big discussion about this subject yesterday (during a family gathering after Easter). My cousin(who has worked on cars all his life) tells me I need to rip out the 2.73 and put 3.73 gears in, and he'll fix me up with a 75hp dry-shot NOS system, which he says if I go any higher will burn my pistons, and throw a chip in.
He says with the 700r4 w/od, I won't notice alot of gas mileage difference. I just find that hard to believe.
