Coming home earlier i'm sitting at a light just minding my own business when this brown maybe 77-78 camaro rolls up next to me. Not really paying any attention to him he throws a rev i take a look over and go wow... When i talk about a car in bad shape i mean it. The front end was that ugly brown and the colors just rainbowed over the rest of the car. He had the back end jacked way up with traction bars hanging down but had little puny tires on it. I rolled down the window and what a motor, thing was huffing black smoke and on top of that you could hear way to much cam so he revs it again and it dies, keeps giving me the look so traffic was light i decided to play. Light is about to go so i give off a "little" tire smoke and jsut launch on this dude, by the time i was in third gear i could barely read his big "fear this" banner across the windshield. Got up to about 80 and backed off. SO next light he rolls up and i throw a rev and again he wants to try. So i yelled over if i should turn the a/c off before we go again. He said something so again light falls i let him take off gets about a car length ahead of me and i jump on it again just blowing by him. Some people really don't belong in camaros. I've seen it before and its been in the same shape for about 3 years. sad really

Hell man i dont even really "race" per say anymore just becasue i have lost friends to it, but if you roll up next to me in basically an older version of my car and start revving like he was you just have to. Its liek constantly taking riceburners jsut to put them in theire place.

I would have raced him too. Watch out for some of those "old" Camaros though. I had a '79 Camaro and swapped out the boat anchor 305 for a 400sbc that was pulled from an old Caprice. I didn't even rebuild it, just added the usual, cam, headers, intake, carb etc. With the stock open rear and stock gears it ran mid-high 13's. I smoked many 5.7 IROCS, 5.0's, GTA's etc.

My car looked dead stock except for the dual exhaust. Damn it was fun surprising people with that car!

406ta thats how my dads 81 Z28 is. It looks like a gorgeous bone stock resto everythign down to the suspension we went through and redid it has the 350 with some nice stuff done to it and has quiet pipes. Kids roll up next to him and he jsut tells him its stock than proceeds to hand there asses to em. I wanted teh sleeper look with mine but screw that i like big hoods and loud exhaust

Tonight i spanked a 70s firebird
It was an older guy i mean 60s and he is out every fri and sat night trying to race people well i didnt really know how fast his car was i know he had at least a 350 it is a fugly faded gold color
well we were lined up at a rolling start at the usuale turn around
well he started to lay in it i was in second so i droped a gear and layed in to it by the time i hit 3 rd gear i was a half a car length ahead of him and then i had to shut it down i felt good because he thinks his car is the badist he gave me the worst go to hell look it pissed him off o well another kill for the Z

Yeah, you need to watch out for those older Z-28's. I had a sharp black 78 Z-28 I put a 406 in. Had it running 12.6 at the local track and loved to smoke anything that pulled up next to me. No ****, you just can't beat the awesome torque of a 406.

problem is out here the mahority of em are in bad shape. THe owners just don't care and that pisses me off more than anything. IT really isnt that hard but i guess some people just have no respect. Oh well gonna be funny in 15+ years when those are the hot ticket liek 69 camaros are now and theirs ended up getting trashed becasue they couldnt take care of it.

lol, sounds like the typical hillbilly with a rusty 305 second gen.
I ran a nicely done and very mean looking 78 Z28 with a swapped ZZ4 from a 40-110 MPH punch and had him by 2-3 cars with my IROC when it was just a t/c and exhaust. he had 2.73 gearing too. they are nice but they weigh close to a deuce, a BBC is pretty much a must for those cars

I had no problem with 5.7 IROCS and GTA's in my '79 Camaro with the junkyard 400. You don't need a BBC for them,a 383 or 400 will do just fine (even a properly built 350).

In fact, a guy over at nastyz28.com has a (full weight) '77 Camaro with a 400sbc (.060) w/ Vortec heads, Crane hydraulic cam, RPM intake, headers, Holley 750VS carb, etc. With 3.73 gears he runs 12.1 and says high 11's are possible with better traction. Impressive, huh?!?

It's really up to how much knowledge the builder has. I know guys around here that have bbc's with too much cam, carb u name it. But guess what at our elevation a 750+ cfm carb is way to much some guys even have trouble with the 600's. I know a guy with this setup in a chevelle and have seen slightly modded hondahs woop him. ANd yet my dad had a 70 nova dipping into low 10's with all motor.

m'eh if you had that motor in a 3rd gen it'd be running mid to low 11s . I personally haven't found a 2nd gen that has given me much competition (far from stock now) but I know they are out there. just not popular platform where I'm from, aside from those 350 and 305 cars with bazooka tip glasspack exhaust, a mismatched cam, and carb that is way too big for the motor lol. those 17 second wonders I don't even bother with lol!

Yeah, there's no doubt those guys are out there! But like you said there are some very quick 2nd gens. too. Check out nastyz28.com sometime.

BTW, my brother had a full weight '79 Trans AM with a 406sbc, solid lifter cam, single plane intake, headers, 750DP, etc. With 3.42 gears, TH400 tranny, Hoosier QT tires and some suspension mods, he ran a 7.79 1/8 mile with a 1.79 60' time. Would that be quick enough to keep up with you??

I own the T/A now. It's a fun street cruiser because a lot of people don't respect the 2nd gen. and think it's a slug. Of course, mine has a stock 350 if I'm asked!

I'd love to get an IROC and drop in a 406sbc but it would never pass emissions here so I'll have to stick with my "antique"!

pulled a 7.5x 1/8, 1.64 sec 60 ft. on ET Streets. and thats with a weenie cam . I'm going for close to 500 HP out of a 350 with another cam (thinking big *** solid roller) and some tuning . it'd be a good run

You have a quick car! My brother's engine ran those times with ported double hump heads. His next step was to get a set of aluminum 195cc+ heads (AFR,TFS, Dart Pro 1, etc.). I'm sure with better heads he would have dropped at least .2-.3 in the 1/4. I'm getting a pair of TFS 23* aluminum heads this summer, can't wait!!

What's you setup?

220cc race ported heads, milled to 58cc (iron though), HSR and supporting hardware, ZZ409 cam (small), custom tuned chip, weight reduction, a little suspension work, 3000 stall, race transmission (700r4), and a 9 bolt. it gets up very nicely
