he's lying

stock for stock, the passat can't touch a 5.7 T/A, unless..

A) The Driver doesn't know how to drive
B) The Driver didn't know they were racing.
C) The T/A was parked

I like option C the best

Yeh that is completely a lie. The HP is alot more and the torque is threw the roof compared to the passat. Heres one to add.

D. Maybe the T/A forgot he had his E-Brake on.

It would help to know what kind of Passat it was, before throwing that comment out. In the US, the VW Passat can be had with a 1.8T with 170hp, a 2.0TDI with 134hp (lotsa torque), a V6 with 190hp, a VR6 with 200hp or a W8 with 270hp.

Also, V6 and W8 versions can be had with 4motion, which is VW's all-wheel-drive system.

Just a little FYI...

Oh btw...I'm new, so Hi everyone

I know all the different models, thanks.

The W8 is really nothing special either.

Also, how many W8's do you really see driving around? chances are it was a VR6 or the 1.8T which are both DOG SLOW...anyone that thinks they're fast or is powerful needs their head checked.

I see W8's almost every day....

And if you say the W8 isn't that special, then your V8 is downright bland. The W8 lets you fit larger displacement and higher power in an all-around smaller package.

Thats a good point Ben, I forgot all about the W8 passats and they come with manual transmission also. 270hp 270tq but they weigh close to 4,000lbs.
If the t/a was a 350 it has atleast 220hp and 320tq and weighs almost 500lbs lighter. It actually would be a pretty good race but he said it was the 200hp version which is the VR6. The W8 can pull off a 7.2 0-60mph. I will definitley think again when one pulls up to me in my 305 auto.

I still think a L98 can take a W8 any day of the week stock vs. stock.

For the price of W8's, um no thanks. It's still a VW. Are they nice cars? Sure, but they're nothing special in my book for that kind of $$$$.

Also, you don't see many W8's around here, people are smart and don't waste their money of VW's

Well, let me put it this way. VW makes some hella nice cars, and some of them are quite the performers, too. Would I pay the price for one? Only if I was rich...which I am most definetly not.

For example. VW Phaeton with W12 engine...like 400+hp AWD luxury ship...sweet car, but not for the price tag. I mean, come one...who's going to buy an 80,000$ VW?

No offense man but you're coming to a fbody board to preach how nice VW's are. I personally don't think they're anything special. Most are underpowered and overpriced.

Sure the higher end VW's are packed full of options and power but at their price range they're in high end Benz and 7-series BMW range. Sorry but I'm not taking a Phaeton over a E55 AMG

Haha, yeah, I do probably come off like that. Honestly, I'm seriously seriously debating finally buying a camaro this week or next. I've found a few 3rd G's I'm really liking and they're cheap. I'm sick of all this 4cyl. bull****. My Neon is fun as hell to drive, but the kohones just aren't there. Besides...my buddy just bought a 95 cobra, and I can't let him have all the V8 fun, now can I

the fastest pissant (passat) is the W8 and they can't even muster 14s out of them. any 5.7L 3rd or 4th gen would smoke to annihilate them depending on the year

You should really drive a newer VW before you bag on them. I promise you have never driven a car with a better fit & finish. Base models are low in the power department, but a buddy of mine with a 02 New beetle 1.8t spanked more third gens than you could shake a stick at.
This is coming from a guy who HATES VWOA. I am into classic VW's, and they treat us like dirt! They are shutting down websites for having a VW symbol on the home page.
I own 2 3rd gens, but to say any 5.7 would smoke one is absurd! You don't see anything special in one because you've never driven one. Later!

I guess my friend's '02 Passat doesn't count Nor does another friend's '00 Jetta VR6. I don't think VW's are all that, they're not great cars, not fast. The 1.8T is a dog engine, I don't care if it's in the beetle or not. BTW, V6 and LO3 thirdgens don't count as kills

I'm not talking about L03 or v-6 third gens, I'm talking about L-98's! His beetle had a boost controller, exhaust, and a homemade cold air kit. He ran 14.60's.
I'm not trying to convince you to buy or even like VW's, I'm just stating my opinion. By the way there are a crap load of 400+hp dog engined 1.8t's running around. Later!

I drove a 5-speed Passat 2.8L back in 2001. I thought it was a slow piece, the interior was cramped and was quite generic. I have been in cars with much better fit and finish, for instance a mercedes benz e-class, lincoln mark VIII, jaguars, acuras, and even late model mustangs with high end interior packages (Mach 1 and Cobras). That passat was slower than my old 5.0L RS, felt sluggish compared to the 3.8 SS Monte Carlo we drove, and I can't even begin to tell you how slow it was compared to the 6-speed LS1 SS Camaro. But go figure it was 16 second car with no grunty torque like the RS, no mid 15 power like the 3.8 and it would take a turbo W8 before it even came close to the LS1. Yes, third gens are quite slow these days (particularly stock 305s), but the fact remains they've got cheap chevy V8s in them. even a dung heap 305 can be turned into a mid 12 second street machine with some cheap motor work and a small shot of nitrous. if you think 14.6 is going to cut it to beat any 350 car you've gotta try harder. I ran 14.4@100 MPH bone stock with my crap 5.7L IROC and I'm sure people can get a 14 FLAT out of them with a catback or even stock with some helluva driver and fewer options.

At the end of the day the only thing that really matters is bang for the buck. Sure a $15k bettle can hang with a $5k camaro. Put $10k into the camaro and youll be walking that bettle all over the place.

P.S. Bout the only good thing VW's have is good seats. If you want a good VW motor take a look at the Audi's.

OK HMM It seems to me that a 350ci thirdgen can beat a 200hp passat so that is that ok!

Yah, 400hp 1.8..whoopty do. How much money did they have to dump into that motor? It's not cheap.

Like I said, the 1.8T is nothing special..he's running 14.6's..you act like that's fast

lol too bad no beetles are 15K, especially the turbo one. base for the turbo beetle is $23850. you can get a new LS1 Car for that price, and it runs about 2 seconds faster .
the only good engine VW ever had was the VR6 slant 6 cylinder 2.8L and even that is slow trash with a turbo on it and costs more than its worth to build. I think it's really funny that their hot new R32 GTI with a 240 HP VR6 in it still only runs high 14s, and costs close to $30K with options, gets WORSE fuel economy than a new (03-04) Cobra and GTO yet is much slower, uglier, can't handle half as good and doesn't have a gas guzzler tax on it for some reason... oh well, the CAFE board has their heads you know where when it comes to those decisions :lala:
volkswagens are not fast and just like honduhs or DSMs that 1.8T needs a ton of work before it'll put out 400+ HP, as well as a ton of money, and its NOT common at all, and even still, it's torqueless and FWD so it'll never be more than a dyno/highway queen. VWs are still daisy sniffer mobiles and always will be.

I was figuring 15k for a used beetle with mods. Only rich people and dumb people buy new cars. They loose most of their value when you drive it off the lot.

Read my post again cool guy, I didn't say a 14.60 would outrun ANY 350 third gen. I am well aware of what a third gen in good tune will run. Most are not in good tune by now.
And I drive a minirammed 383, so I do not think 14.60's is real fast. But, I've seen alot of kids with mid-fifteen second cars that say they run thirteens or better. Later

OK, did a little bit of looking. The W12 has 420hp and it is a 6.0L. Kind of low output for that large of an engine, but pretty decent nonetheless. What is interesting, however, is the V8 that you can buy in the Phaeton and the Touareg is a 4.2L with 335hp...not too bad, IMHO.

The W12 Phaeton supposedly runs a 14.40@99.0mph...decent for a car that weighs 5064lbs...

Let's see...just some random info, since I'm bored:

Passat W8: 3671lbs. 271hp 14.30 1/4mile

R32 Golf 3.2V6: 3422lbs. 240hp 14.7 1/4mile....pig

Golf GTi 1.8T: 2820lbs. 177hp 16.0 1/4mile.....piiiig

Problem is this: VW makes very heavy cars...at least the newer VW's.

Ben

That's not really true. Yeah, all cars take a big hit their first year on the road but it depends on the make/model after that. Some people like new cars so they don't have to deal with someone elses problems or sometimes they want a car that only they've owned.
