Almost got schooled by a Z24
Tonight we were all out at Tim Hortons just chillin when this Stock looking Z24 rolled in and wanted to race. This car had some neons inside the car and 2 farcans on the back. My buddy right away tells the guy I will race him. I really didn't feel like it but muh what the hell. Guy then goes and lines up at the lights and waits for me to get there.
As soon as go to lineup he launches and catches me off guard. I then take off after him, I caught up and beat him but by maybe 1/4 of a car length. We turned around and pulled into tim hortons again. I shook the guys hand...guess he didn't expect that from me cuz he seemed shocked. I then asked him what he had under the hood cuz his car was pulling mad. Aparently he did cams and head upgrade as well as he was running with a chip and the car was a manual tranny.
So I almost got schooled by GMs cheapest car. I want to make sure that this never happends again. I am now looking into a bigger engine.

Wow sucks to be that guy. My friends z24 ran high 15's bone stock. Now he has a header, cat back, 2" drop, and a SS carbon fiber hood and ram air intake and he ran a 15.4 about a month ago in it. That should be enough to run close with any L03 with bolt ons. I doubt your running any better than low 15's so That guy wasted alot of money just to run low 15's. Wow that sucks. Good kill none the less.

I don't really consider it a kill. If the race would have bene more then 1/4 of a mile he would have seriously took me. That car has some mad power coming out of it.

THos things can go prety good Z24. I drove one the other day (my dads customers car) and they go pretty decent for a 6 banger. This is one was a 2.8 tho

Yeah this one was a 2.4L Quad Cam. Stock they ran 140hp at 150lbs of torque. Those cars with an automatic tranny are slow as hell but with that manual transmission he was riding the power band the whole time.

I saw a 2.4L 5sp Z24 run consistant 15.7s at the track last month. It was hot and humid also. It was stock except for a fart cannon.

They are quick 4 banger cars. I have that motor right now in a M5 grand am and my roomate had a '98 m5 Z24 as well. We used to race (stock LO3 at the time) and he could pretty much hang with me slowly pulling away. If that guy had the cam kit and such for that car he should have killed you. Sounds like he was stock.

My L03 isn't quite stock. I have the hiflow exhaust and the open air element. That has to give my car a bit more ponies then stock.

The TwinCam is a pretty decent motor. The Z24's should ordinarily, with good driver, take an LO3 pretty easy - My LO3 RS lost to a few of 'em.
the 2.4L has a 150HP stock rating...me and my b/f both have one, he has a 2000 and I have a 99, they have a lot of pull and can run and beat a lot of the weaker 3rd gens with 305's. We know because we have a 1984 Camaro with a 305 too.

watch out for the old 2.3 quads! the olds 442 w41 (some what rare but, you will see them) run a mild 14.6-14.8 stock! and the reg. H.O. GTZ, Grandam was only rated for high 15.8 but, when driven right they have been known to hit low 15's and on a good day high 14 (that can take lg4,lo3s and lB9 autos)
