Who....

I had a 1972 Chevy pickup with a 383/700/3.73 set up for the street. It had a Comp 274 Xtreme cam and a good set up motor. The thing weighed as much as any 30 year old truck. I was just wondering, does what does everybody think would happen against a 92 L98, the fastest (nonturbo) thirdgen off the top of my head. I know what would win (I ran it at the track), I just wanted to see what everybody thought.

what did it run at the track ??

alot of it would depend upon drivers .....but why compare a truck with a 383 700r4 and 3.73 gears to a stock camaro ??

wouldnt it make more sense to compare it to a camaro with a 383 700r4 and 3.73 gears then you could get a true guess of how quick it actually is ?

I think the truck would kill the thirdgen. They may be heavy but the 383s arent slouches.

a 383 is a heck of a torque monster if set up right can get some really good hp from it too it all depends on how much traction he gets...trucks arent known for traction with the lack of weight over the rearend of the vehicle....

I didn't say what it ran because that would give away who would win. I'm not comparing it to an equally modified Camaro because it would have spanked it silly, 2000 or so fewer pounds. It isn't as quick as a biult thirdgen, but I was wondering what everybody thought about a truck that could pull a 5000+ lbs trailer and keep up.

im sure it could do more than keep up especially if you could get decent traction ...

I would guess the truck. sounds like a healthy motor to me, and as long as it is running good, makes a lot more power than any thirdgen.

does sound like the truck could win as long as he gets good traction that is ....

I ran a 383 truck once. it was 50-60's truck with nice 383 and a stick and he ran me pretty hard! I had three other kids in the car, adding 400+lbs so it sucked, but from a dig, it would have been close for a while but he probly would still have taken me

my TGO screen name @ gmail. (cheyenne383)

As for traction, the rear suspension was heavy duty and the front suspension was plain wore out, so it actually hooked decent from a roll becasue of the weight transfer.

Thats a beautiful truck. I have always liked ford trucks, but my favorite chevy is a 72. There was a guy who lived here in town had a two tone like yours, dark blue and white. Had a built 396 in it. Turned my head every time it came over.

Hey I got one of dem der trucks!!! 69baby oh and mines a show winner!

Hey cheyenne... maybe you should've asked something like this... "if my 383 truck was pulling 5000 pounds who would win me or a stock Camaro?"

Now that would get some replies...

Okay, the truck ran a best of 13.87, but it hit 104 mph, so traction was definately and issue. I still love my baby though, 13's on the motor and it pulls a loaded enclosed trailer. I have taken several local Mustangs, Camaros, and a slew of imports. I have been beat, but hell, it's a truck.

Nice! If i had a truck like that, it be up on 8inch lift with some 44" boggers and a built 427 Superram motor making TONS of torque. Running high 12's in the quarter launching in 4wd!!! That be BAD!!!!

You wouldn't be running any 12's with wheels that big.

I'm with stu on this one, the drivetrain loss would be massive, with a transfer case and that big of tires. Not to mention the gearing you would need to turn those meats, would screw you in the quarter.

Oh well, it seems possible to me. A 800hp supercharged big block wont run into the 12's? I think so. Maybe 38.5" tires. LOL

But who cares anyway. No big deal. It would be cool as hell but i aint doing it any time soon. LOL

I'm into trucks as well as cars, and read Four Wheeler's top truck challenge every year. They do a 1/4 mile test and most years there is at least 1 truck running 12s with 44s. One year there was a truck with 48" tractor tires running mid 12s.

Jesus. What kind of gearing/power are they making.

I never said it was impossible, I happen to know of a certain semi that would probably benefit from larger tires since it's never even made a full throttle pass without smoking the tires all the way through the track.
