L98 vs Lt1

I finally raced a friend and I was shocked when I pull very slightly harder then him in 1st and 2nd. And we stay neck and neck the whole rest of they way. Im very pleased with my Iroc needless to say. I though I would get stomped.

Here I come Ls1s!

Yeah Im aware of the Ls1 and its capabilites Ill get them soon But first I need heads, cam, and intake
Right now my mods are
Accel Ignition
Airfoil/K&N filters
Edelbrock shorties
Flowmaster 40 series
Custom Burnt Chip
3.73 gears
Rebuilt 700r4 w/ B&M shift kit
2000 stall
Tranny cooler
alum. driveshaft

I forget what he had

I was pretty confident off the line cause I know I have more torque but I also have more body flex. And he gots like 50hp over me without my mods. So it suprised me

Good kill but you don't necessarily have more torque than an LT1. You just have a slightly higher peak value. With your mods your car should be able to run with any stock LT1 car.

By the stock numbers I do have more torque at the crank but to the wheels is a different story that I am aware of. Im working on the suspension to put power to the ground.
Anyone know what lift a stock l98 head can take? Im thinking of a .480 .510. with 1.6 rockers. LT4 Springs and screw in suds I have.

If your valve guides are untouched than you cannot go higher than .480". Not all heads are alike and casting differences can have that number as low as .460". You are smart to go with the screw in studs over the stock press in type. While you are having your heads drilled and tapped for them have them cut the guides so that you can run more than .480" lift.

Just curious not trying to get smart or anything but how do you know the maximum lift on the stock heads is .480? and what about coil bind where does that come in?

That is a standard limit for all stock cast GM heads (with the excpetion of Gen II, gen III and certian Gen I heads). You typically see coil bind on the exhaust side before the intake side.
If you exceed that .480" you have a high chance of experiencing serious coil bind and thus valvetrain, and possibly cam failure.

That same .480" is used as the norm for TBI, TPI, LG4, and Vortec heads.

Sounds like you should be running with and beating stock LT1s! good kill!

LT1s are tough motors, with just basic mods I pulled on my friends IROC 350 TPI with cam/headers/chip by about 2 cars to 110 MPH. Watch out, 96-97 SS/WS6 models will still walk you, imho. They're 305 HP stock.

Sure sounds about right for an LT1 with "basic" mods and a 350 tpi with a sh*tty set-up.

I know I cant take a ls1 as it stands but Im aiming for them. The setup that will get me there Ported l98 heads, mini ram, .510 lift cam or so, and maybe alittle laughing gas. Not looking to beat them just hang with them. Goal around medium 12 sec and high 11s on Nitrous.

We can always dream

sell teh L98 heads, spring from some used AFR's, and get a decent size cam paired up with the miniram, and you'll walk a stock LS1.
