2002 birdy lost in the dust somewhere in corn country
I do not condone street racing first and foremost, but here's the story:
Last Sunday decided to let my wife ride along for one of my weekend cruises around town. On the way home I noticed a newer bird keep riding up on my bumper than letting off-seen what looked like a nice looking gal in his pass seat and a "pretty boy" behind the wheel.
So we were stopped at a light, him right behind me light turns green and I take off like normal, notice he's hanging waay back and then I went back to watching the road...few seconds later I hear a whoooosh and a black streak goes flying past my pass side door....one of those hang back and punch it kids and gets ahead of you when your not expecting anything so now he's faster than you
Well as luck would have it, we were stopped at another stoplight with cars in front of both of us and I looked over to see a nicve looking gal looking at me and a pretty boy with this cheesy grin so figured if when the time comes I'll show his girlfriend how fast his new firebird really is
Go over the hill top, and just like we were gods, both cars in front of us turned 1 left and 1 right leaving this flat open raod ahead of us with no houses for a good 3/4 mi. so I looked over, dropped it into 2nd, gave him the nod and waited till I heard him kick'er down. It was almost a close race for a split second...almost. He were together for that split second it took me to realize he punched it before it registered upstairs and I stood on it, after that cant really say it was very close at all??!!
Pulled 3rd gear and took it a ways before letting out of it and by then he knew-easily 15?car lengths behind me....stopped at the next light with all 4 of us grinning and for some reason he did'nt jump/bounce at me anymore??? LOL Final stop light I pulled up on the other side to see what if anything he had done, was disappointed to hear nothing. Weather that was true I dont know, sounded like an awful lotta air being moved from his car when he stood on it, though I could'nt hear any tell tale blower nosies with my stereo blaring and my loud azz exhaust. We dont have any vettes round here and all the **** rockets have chicks on the back so not really anything I can play with in town...better that way too
Then the wife pipes up...."what did that prove?" just told her the kids daddy will probably be buying some new parts for the kids car is all.

hahaha nice kill
Was it a 6er or an LS1, didn't catch that. Doesn't matter, you'd rape him either way.
Haha that was funny.

Make no mistake this car is street first, strip second. I built this car solely for dual purpose since I'm too young and dumb to justify this kind of coin in a car that can only be driven on a 1/4 mi at a time. Just take your street car, add in the goodies needed to be competative in Pro/Modified class and there you have it, pump gas, 800watt stereo system, full interior minus backseat. Nothing fancy by anymeans, not even the motor, just good heads and small cam (for a solid roller anyways) idles all day at 900rpm, never goes over 180* in traffic water temp or 160* tranny temp when cruising.
For the record, it runs 11.1? consistently, when the air gets good then it'll go faster.
Very mild street mannered car to say the least, nowbody believes it till they ride in it.
Kid said it was an LS1, so at least it was a V8. The older I get the less attention I pay to badges on a car, so there was probably telltales on the fenders or something, I just did'nt see them-did have the ram air hood on it though.

Sounds like you had some good fun.Ever think you will bring your beast to Wisconsin to an RSD event? If you ever do maybe I can find a set of slicks and we can line up

LOL, I had a buddy goto some kind of event up there and he e-mailed some video footage, there were some nasty cars at that event!! He basically told me if you dont have a street car running at least 8's, keep it on the trailer
Was'nt going to race this year, been hitting it waay hard the past 3yrs, now my daughters getting older and I dont want to wish in 20yrs we would've done more family stuff instead of me things-plus as much as I spend annually racing it could really be put to better use growing my business so that's yet another factor weighing in.....and of course burnout wasting EVERY WEEKEND during the summer at one track or another
If I retire from points chaseing & fuel prices go down I'd be game for travel, I love going to different tracks to run for diversity-best friend jhust moved to Nebraska and wants me to pull ouot and run at Scribner with him this summer, but scared of the 5.5hr pull and what it'll cost me
, anyways I've got 3 sets of slicks in the basement collecting dust with plenty of thread left, so dont worry about not having stickies if I make it up there-you just bring the rims and I'll make sure you can stick to the track!!!
Only plans/goals for this year-win at least 1 race since they all pay $2K this year and get my nitrous set-up installed-I wanted 10's N/A out of a pump gas street car and got it, now I want high 9's and will get it one way or another-through the pipes!!

wow really nice ride you got there. that seems like one hell of a roller cam you got there. i know a guy at my track running a 86 vette with a similar solid roller cam on superram 383. runs consistant 11.3's
that must be one hell of a street car

I personally believe it's the way the cam's ground. The other truck I race is 700lbs lighter, has true 12.5 compression, bigger heads, bigger cam (Comp) and is not a whole lot faster then I am (10.77-.80)and is only good for the track. Same with brother in laws car, same cubes, 13.5 compression, huge solid roller (.680/.721), and he very very seldom ever takes it on the street since he's always worried soemthings going to break and cant stray far from home since he needs the race fuel, he's running 10.70's also (went 10.40's on 300 shot-needs tuned bad).
Both of those have the Dart Pro 1 230 heads, which I've seen tested on the flow bench before and after porting work and they still flow less than my 210AFR's out of the box that dont have any fine tuning for port work. I attribute most of the power to great flowing heads with small runners (in the grand scheme of things) and whatever Bullet does when they're grinding these cams out. For a solid roller this is VERY tame lift wise and I wanted one like this for the fact I street drive it and did'nt want to replace valve springs twice a year. I could easily be consistent high 10's during the summer with a larger bumpstick or pulling out the stereo system/interior, but I dont want to lose the excellent drivabilty I have with the current combination. Heck, my power brakes work better now than they ever did with the small 355 I had previous!!
I reached my goal of seeing multiple 10's back to back, would prefer to go deeper, but it wont happen with current combination since it's maxed out.
Would like to step into a nice 421/434sbc and larger cam-would still be very streetable, but would have the cubes to ensure mid 10's all day long....just taking a step back from the financial burden for now is all. would love to get higher wheelies though

Holy wow.
Until this thread I had no idea your car was street driven. That thing's a monster, and driveable to boot! BTW if that cam is small, the hydro roller I have coming (224/230) is officially puny. Your Bird does 3Gs proud wherever it goes

Rouge knows I drive it, guess his crusing spot is'nt really "street driving since it's just going around the local parking lots and city blocks, but I drive the wheels off it any chance I get-keeps me sane from all the headaches of work during the week. kinda like having a motorcycle or other toy you can enjoy and get your mind in other places
It make sme deaf though LOL, between the loud exhaust, then having to crank the stereo up to overcome that...well you get the picture
This on after we got back from ET finals so still had contingency stickers on
And yes, it runs with mufflers at ALL times-tried open headers and did'nt go any faster anywhere on the track.

Made my night.
Nice, background pic collection here I come. We don't have 3Gs like this out here, at least not on the street. And WOW, your car digs in. I have considered the Jegster torque arm but didn't know how well it would hold up to hard launching. Now I know
I know what you mean about maintaining sanity. My car is no screamer yet but it keeps me grinning. These cars do that to a person, mild or wild.
Neat interior on the Bird, digging the truck too. Thanks for the pics man.

I think your friend goes by the screen name of C U Later or something like that. I haven't met him yet but I hope to if he comes up this year. I know there will be some heads up street racing at one of the Iowa tracks he goes to this year so I'm not sure he's going to make the treck to WI this year.Yeah there are a few 8 second "street cars" at the RSD events, but most of those are more race than street. You will see some true 9 sec street cars tho. Most of us little guys are still somewhere between the 10's ad 13's tho.lol

They live in southern IA and run at Eddyville raceway, that track just got a new manager and he's bringing back some true outlaw 10.5 racing so I hope it all works out as it'd naturally spread into other tracks (our track) Nothin against a1/8 mi. tracks, and it's nice for racing since your not beating the cars as long as 1/4 mi., but when your watching heads up races, 1/8mi. tracks just dont cut it!!

I think Jerry said on the Eddyville forums he's going to be trying the car out in Drag Radial this year. Should be pretty interesting, there is another 3rd gen Camaro coming up from mossouri that is supposed to be pretty bad in the DR catagory as well.
And yes, I can definitly vouch for IHI's car on the street. Made for quite the head turner the night he had it up at the local cruise spot. Gonna do it again this summer?

As long as the car holds together (fingers crossed) and the big bucks thingey does'nt fall on one of our points races I'd love to come back down there. That track is second to none that I've raced at for track prep and overall super nice facility!!
Hope Jerry gets some things figured out before he tries that radial class, I know last year looking at his time slips when he was running the M/T radials his 60's were ALL OVER the friggin place. Is the radial class a heads up deal or bracket style? If heads up he's have a better chance, if bracket style the 60' numbers I saw are just going to kill any kind of consistency as well as non reliable R/T's.
I'd really like to make it down for your night of fire event, but I dont know if my nerves could take it. That 1/8mi stuff I just start to get a woody when they're reaching good speed, then it's time to shut them down again
LOL!! Do you have the schedule near by? Lemme know when your guys night of fire is and I'll look at my schedule. Where's a good place to eat down there-steaks, ribs, bar-b-que sort of stuff? I'll come cruise around again for sure, lotta people and dang sure alot of cops
no way any place racing in that town!!!! I'll just drive up from the track and leave the trailer back there to save my spot at the track. For those never been down there, that night I swear there was 2 cops per 1 person hanging out, you literally could not drive 1 block without seeing at least 2 squad cars
city must have a big budget I guess LOL!!
Lemme know if you want some of our streete night race dates, lots of girls, usually couple hundred cars or darn close most of the time and I imagine like your track it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Most start at 8pm and wrap up around 3-4am for final round, I think your car would be perfect for that deal-cut a light, run within .5 of your dial-most of the runs
and your onto the next round. I've tried to explain to the new kids how it works, but they're dead set on beating you to the stripe no matter what
then every race I get a few tough guys that try to argue with you that they won

yeah, the drag radial class is going to be one of the several heads up classes they're adding this year. I think if everything is tuned well on his car, he should be able to go some rounds.
As for steak places, there is one in montezuma, you come through there if you come down on hwy 63. Then if you head south from the track there is ottumwa, which is a pretty big town, prolly be something down there... I'll have to do some scouting
As for the cops at the cruise spot, yeah they are still pretty thick. And most racing is a no-go. But there are a few places to go sneak out for a quick run or two. Tough finding anything fast up there to run most of the time anyways.
I went down there last weekend for the first time in quite awhile, LOTS of kids out, had a good time though, met some chicky's, had some kid tell me and my friends we were gonna get our asses kicked, checked out a couple nice cars, lol good times
I think I might try to make it to a street night up there, with this years tires I should be able to hook up. Last year with the drag radials it was baaad.

When I first started racing with my aptly named "Blue Bumper Bandit" LOL, running 13.5's and could hook in mud, had the time of my life beating the snot outta all the other cars and collecting my money's
Same when I made a few changes and running 13.00's. could still hook in dirt which made those night races a give me. Last year I will admit track was very surprising in how well it hooked, even with all the dust and crap the radial tired cars brought up and all the dirt, rust, crap getting shook loose from the wheel hopping *******-r-s
Just pipzzed me off cuz when we got the new manager they did'nt want to pay out any money-went from $300 to win the past 2 years to nothing? Finally convinced him to at least pay $200 and I think they have some bigger payouts for this year depending on car count.
I'm wondering, the guys that were gonna kick your azz....were your talking to their girls? LOL, always gotta be a tough guy/s in a crowd and worst part is as they get older most of them still have that same assenine mentality and wonder why they're losers!

oops, think i got the wrong idea across there... traction didn't exist on the street night I went to. I was messing with air pressures some, but I think I only got 1 or 2 sub 2.0 60'
I shouldn't have any problems hooking up with the new torque arm and 28" tires.
hmm good question on the part about checkin out their girls.... I don't think so, these kids were riding around on bicycles with motor cross helmets on... quite the crew let me tell ya.
