v-8 Fiero Vs 05 Mustang

There’s a guy in my auto 100 Class that drives one of the new 05 mustang GTs and he keeps claming that his mustang will blow everything on the road out of the water... including my 350TPI Fiero.

Ill admit he’s got something like 50 HP on me... but his car also weighs over 1000lbs more then me too.

Now I've run at the track and done 13.30 @ 104 mph (a personal best) and that’s with a stock 350TPI... from every magazine I’ve read his will only do 13.60 @ 90 something mph... And when I tell him this he says "its wrong... it’ll blow you away its a stang"

If I hadn’t broken an axel id show him up right now...
I don’t know if this is a bitch thread or what... but do you guys get a lot of stang owners thinking that no matter what their car is better then yours? Even despite proof to the contrary?

I know my car isn’t the coolest… neither is it the fastest… but you gotta give respect to a Fiero running low 13’s.

Man, in the forum rules there really shouldn't be any bashing Mustangs And yes, you would beat him.

I don’t intend this to be bashing... did it come off that way?
*** no... I like the new mustang... think its cool as hell.
But I'd be making the same thread about Honda or Mopar (ext.) guys who do the same thing... Its more about the owner then the car.

I think I get it more then most because I drive a car with such a bad stigma surrounding it...

Its going to get locked it not thirdgen related. But that fiero sounds freaking sweet. was it hard to fit the motor in? you just need a few mods on that motor and you could oblitirate (sp?) tons of people, mustangs wouldn't even be a concern.

Well, that guy is a clown and makes me miss my car in a bad way. Beat him and shut him up.

The problem is, with guys like that, he'll just come up with an excuse, no matter how many times you beat him, or how badly.

EDIT: While this is still up (it's so nice to learn about different car without having to join 10,000 other forums by the way) How is the Fiero? Does it have a lot of problems? Like I understand that there will be normal wear and tear, but does it have any notable problem areas?

I will say what I always do, idiots drive all kinds of cars. My friend runs high 12s with just an x-pipe, chip, CAI, and DRs in his 05 Mustang! This is also at a crappy track. Underestimate the driver not the car!

I think the main reason the Fiero didn't last was due to some kind of construction problem that made the car a potential explosion hazard. That, and it didn't come with any "real" powerhouse engine. IIRC, Pontiac used the 2.8L 60* V6 in the Fiero, which is super slow in stock form.

I've never heard of anyone cramming a 350 TPI in that tiny car though. Props to you man, great times too.

Car: 84 Fiero
Engine: 350TPI
Transmission: 5 Speed Getrag
First let me say... technically it should be allowed to stay along with my self as the engine is right out of a 3rd gen (89GTA)... I joined for help and info on my engine.

2nd... They stopped making the Fiero for a number of reasons, the fire hazard was eliminated the first year... many cars have fire issues... this was not the main reason for its discontinuation, it was killed, because 1. Sales were far below expected... and 2. The Fiero was becoming what Pontiac wanted which was a true sports car... and at a quarter the price of the corvette... well GM didn’t want to lose sales to their flag ship so it was killed (or at least how the story goes)… there are other reasons, but escape me at the moment… if you want I can dig up the others.

3rd... Air intake is just under an open vent... I don’t have side scoops on that of the car yet so till then its a little under fed.

4th... same problems you’d expect from any other 20 year old car, except I’m very lucky and my body has no rust on it (ok not so lucky as its made of plastic) but my frame is rust free and here in the rust belt that’s super lucky for any car... I’ve had to replace headers, starter, I’ve broken an axel... and my front end suspension needed replacing... but once I replace that axel it’ll be good as new, no other parts should be breaking anytime soon... everything except the frame and rims are now under 10 years old.

5th I hope I'm allowed to stay... I like this forum and you guys seem very receptive even to a fire-o

you can kind of see in it in this pic… its under that vent… once I get side scoops for both sides… ill run the air right from the side scoop and into the engine.

There’s actually a lot of kits to put a V-8 in a Fiero.. as far as I’m aware I have one of 5 or 6 350TPI’s and maybe 2 or 3 of those are out of a Trans Am… and if I’m not mistaken Im the only GTA… but I could be mistaken we have our own forums… and even with over 11,000 members on a couple… not every v-8 Fiero owner is registered.

Thats freakin awesome!!! I would hate to change spark plugs on that thing though. Lots of guys use the northstar engine because its already ment to be mounted transversally. Also its a dual over head cam motor making the spark plugs alot easier to change.

Spark plug change steps
1. Jack up car
2. crawl underneath
3. use just a socket and wrench on out side 4 (this is the side facing the trunk)
4. crawl farther back
5. use socket and one of those socket extenders with a bendable joint so you can get it at a decent angle
6. place spark plugs back in doing steps 5-3
7. get out from underneath

Not too bad... after doing it once I can safely say I can do it again in less time.

I saw an article that read something like: "Run 12's in your '05GT for under $2000." That car puts out good times with some simple mods.

Well, the 4.6 engines may be fast, but those things walk cranks like crazy. I have a friend that has an 03 Stang with 30k miles on it and the main bearings are already whirring/grinding. He drives pretty easy on it two..

They def don't hold up like the old 5.0's. There are some around here with 200k miles on them still running and getting thrashed on without a hiccup.

I used to have an 85 2M4 and an 86 2M6.....fun little cars indeed but the power just wasnt there. If I had the money I would have dropped in a nice stout power packed 350 in a heartbeat. Those cars are the real sleepers. Some decent wheels, stock body, big bad motor (V8 or even a SC/turbo'd 3.8 from a GN or GTP), and kinda lookin stock and you'll waste cars easily.

As for the race, You'll clean him off the board but you do need to open up the air intake, that will give you some power. '05 Mustangs on run mid 13's with a GOOD driver.....soundsl ike his driving skills may not be up to par so therefore if hes a 5 speed, he'll run a high 13.....but thts all they do stock. Theres one locally I kept handing its *** to with my 228x mile bone stock 5.0....I had bald old street tires and ghetto exhaust not to mention a bit crappy clutch.....Yeahit was funny. The '05sarent my taste in cars either, bit ugly to me.

Cool car but it isn't 3rd gen related. There are plenty of 3rd gen motors that are shared in a different configuation with other platforms. L98, LO3, Iron Duke, 3.1, 2.8, LG4 are a few that come to mind.
