gotta say that an aluminum 427 cu in monster called the ZL1 deserves a LOT of respect.

look at the new Z06. 11.7 BONE STOCK in the quarter. it is a 427 as well.

the ZL1 was specifically built to race and it accompished this extrememly well. the 11.6 sounds well within reach from what i know of the engine and certainly when you consider the new Z06.

all things being equal, i would still choose the TTA over the ZL1 for the reason i mentioned above. (yes i know the ZL1 is worth several TTAs, but that is not what we are talking about)

also, i never said the ZL1 would ruin handling. the bottom line is that the technology in the TTA will/does run circles around technololgy form 1969. i can't find them but i am pretty sure i saw article(s) about street TTAs running in the 11s and one was in the 10s. i don't recall the mods but they were "street" cars.

again, BOTH cars are worthy of admiration.

You can't compare headers and slicks to a turbo car. You'd have to say either slicks and a full exhaust, or slicks and a boost controller.

 

I know a ton of TTA/turbobuick guys running DEEP 11's and can/and do daily driver their cars

 

Yup, that's the beauty of these cars. Plus you can run in the 11s without removing a valve cover.

 

Plus, there's little difference in the appearance of a stock high-13 or low-14 second TTA (like mine) and one that has some modding to put it inthe low twelves/high elevens, when they're sitting beside each other. Pop hood, and you have to know what to look for, too. Same thing applies to GN's and TR's.

 

Yep, this one runs mid 9's @ 140+ and was driven to the track 150 miles each way.

lol, good point. We'll say with full exhaust and slicks. Hell, just slicks alone. Slicks on the TTA and the ZL1, ZL1 wins. 13.1's on bias plys is going to net deep 12s on slicks.

On the history channel they had an episode with the ZL1 and said it went 0-100 in 10 seconds, don't know if I believe that, but it sure was a beast of a car in it's day and now still.

 

How often will you guys see a 69 ZL1 Camaro on the street or strip?

certainly more than possible on the ZL1. probably be faster with traction. the 427 AC Cobra did 0-100 and back to 0 in about 13 sec.

the new Z06 does 100 in 7.8!!! according to car and driver.

There's a far likely better chance of seeing a TTA on the street/strip than any 69 ZL1 Camaro. There's quite a few people on this site who have TTA, in fact. I'm sure not all of them keep their cars neatly packed away in the garage, waiting for them to appreciate in value.

Now, if we're talking about the 69, I highly doubt anyone would risk taking this car out anywhere, much less race it. Way too valuable to risk wrecking it or damaging parts.

 

It's only valuable if you plan on selling it.

 

They only made 1,555 TTA in 1989. Thats including test cars! I wouldnt know the production numbers on a ZL1 but i know its low as well. Theres not many TTA. Yea theres some ppl on this site who own them cuz they have third gen pride and this is a third gen fbody tech site. But if you go to your average joe schmo car club you wouldnt find many. Plus some are probably wrecked which decreases the numbers of them left. I saw a TTA with 200,000 miles on ebay. Some ppl use them as regular cars and dont care about the pride and the heritage of the car. So then they junk it if its no good (but most TTA owners are not like that though)

 

From what im reading, they only built 69 ZL1 Camaros. And they werent much of a success either. They were window sticker @ $7,000! That was a ton of money back in 1969 for a car. Hell back in 1969 my grandpa bought his house for 25 grand! Now its worth 500,000 (which is avg now a days LOL) That was 4 thousand dollars more then the base price Z28/ camaro...

 

Kind of an old thread - but I daily drive my TTA and it needs a bath (white is a total pain to keep clean in Hawaii) and it needs some minor work - not in any way pristine, nor did I even get it that way, so I'm not caring about resale value. I enjoy driving it, simply.

 

well said. i don't confuse cars i buy with musem pieces. if it is worth more than i'm willing to risk, like poker, i won't pay.

personally i wouldn't want to tell my grandkids........look at the the zero mileage whatever.....more like.......get in, buckle up, and hold on.
