ok a buddy of mine is in the process of buying this 86 iroc that has a completely stock rebuilt 305tpi w/ 2000 miles on motor BONE STOCK paper filter stock muffler even. well now he is starting to talk **** already and my ta isnt even running yet but he keeps saying that he will kill me because his is tpi and im running carb and basicly this kid thinks what ever he has is BA no mater what. another reason for this is when he had his 83 crossfire w/ mods it was faster than my ta when it had its old 215,xxx mile lg4 w/ 2.73's well now im putting a rebuilt ho305 in mine that has been bored .030 over flat tops long tube headers 3in flows mabey swap to slp and a cam of 447lift and 291 adv duration with accel cap rotor wires and what not 4 deg advance timing w/ stock carb and intake for now until i get it broken in and i get some more cash. im also swaping in a BW posi disc 3.08 rear i know its not big jump from 2.73 but i got it in parts car that i bought for $150. what i realy want to know is what are the chanes ffor me putin him in his place? we will prob ran a few times from dig and roll both are 700r4s alsoand unsure of his rear gear. i mean i know the tpi has strong low end but it power maxes out at 4500 and i know the motor that i am puting in my car that i have redone used to pull to 6k if not a lil more in a buddies car of mine. oh mine also has completely rebuilt 416 heads w/ a lil stiffer valve spring.any input would be nice good or bad.

You'll beat him handily IMO, your intake will hold you back some however. 86 was the worst year for the 305 TPI auto, peanut cam sucks all the power outta it...

You running a fresh motor w/ a good cam, full exhaust, and a good intake he literally has zero chance... BTW it makes no sense not to go ahead and swap the intake out now, I'm assuming the motor is not in the car yet. Now is the time to do the install. At least get something like a Edelbrock Performer intake. They're pretty cheap (especially if buy used on ebay or something) and you'll make a good bit more power w/ the rest of the setup like it is. Hell a Performer intake is a dyno proven 20hp mod on a LG4 w/ dyno headers as the only mod, be worth at least that in your case w/ the much better cam...

i want this to be a stout motor for my first build and by the looks of it it will be but this is just mainly my learning experiance motor ive got a 350 4bolt main that will be my first motor i will build alone and will have big power "383" plans for it w/ all forged internals and posibly fule injectioin and some spray. but this guy is my best friend but he realy needs to be put in his place and shown that he can be beat even though he has a stout car

From a roll you'll rape him. I'll bet you'll trap easily 6 mph faster. Tune that carb and get a better intake.

From a dig it'll be close for the first 60 feet, then you'll start pulling.

Don't mess up the launch and it's cake. The 86 auto tpi had a peanut cam that probably has less lift than your honda's

well thats what i was thinking i mean i know this motor i built will not be a power house but will for sure be considerably stronger than stock tpi 5.0 but him and all my friends say it will be even or that he will pull on me the whol way. but no one seemes to understand when i tell them that even if he dose pull on me he stops making power between 4500 and 5k and i should still pull to 6 or MABEY 6500 but still to soon to say. i know the gears i have now will def help in top end speed when i had the stock lg4 in it i had got it to about 120-130 in 3rd and i was at like 4 or 4500rpm and if i would let out and slowly increse speed i got it to about 130 at 3500. thats was insane and it was long straight strech and took awhile to get there and it was all it had.but my goal isnt to do anything like that again i just want good handaling quick to 100 car.but any way how much would the intake gears lets say 3.73 roller tip rockers and shift kit improve this race 4 me?

With that cam you're using with that stock intake, I think he'll kill you off the line, and you'll be playing catch-up. You'll catch him rather quickly probably though.

222*/222* is terrible for those heads (these heads like split-duration cams) and won't rev as well as you'd like because of the stock intake. The parts just don't match well.

That cam would work well with a better intake and 3.73 gears, though something liek a 218/224 would be a much better choice (XE262)..
