depends they have a cobalt SS with 170hp 2.4L w/VVT then you have the cobalt SS/SC with 205hp 2.0L supercharged. the SS/SC's run mid 14's with a good driver. I haven't seen any times for the na SS. the SS/SC's have the shopping cart wing

So a stock LS1 would most likely kill it?

This kid has one around here and he makes it sound like something special, but this is the same dumbass who pulled into a turn lane in his cavalier to try and race me on a one lane road.

Cobalt as a Muscle Car

I was at a Chev Dealer - looking at one for my girlfriend - and I had some sales guy come over. Must have thought I was some chump - guess he didn't see the Camaro I came in with - and he went on with his spiel trying to sell me on the supercharged Cobalt...his biggest selling point - no one is going to believe this - but he tried to tell me that the sc Cobalt will outrun a 2006 Z06 in the quarter...

I laughed out loud and told him I would race my Camaro against him in one of the Cobalts and winner gets both. He laughed, thought I was joking. I had to tell him I wasn't. I then told him that based on his selling tactics I would be looking elsewhere...

The SC ones are are easy low 14 second cars and make more than their 205hp rating. The four door non SC ones are much slower but should still run with any stock LO3 or LG4 car. They are not faster than a stock LS1 car.

Tune, Exhaust and Pulley may keep up with an Auto Ls1 car though.

Saw a guy in a Bone *** stock supercharged SS at the track, he was running 14.6s every time. Pretty consistent driver! They have potential, and can be a nice daily ride.

On the salesman deal, you aint lying! I was looking at one and a salesman told me he outran an SVT Cobra R. HAHAHAHA. I laughed and left.

salesmen tend to exagerate many things. I've shut more than one up by showing him that I knew a fair bit more about the car I was looking at than him, then sent him off to find me answers to questions that I knew would take him awhile (like final drive ratios and such).

on topic, I've raced the supercharged version with the TA and it wasnt even a race. of course even when my ta was bone stock it had fully 100 more horsepower lol

I would not doubt that one bit. Same goes for the Saturn Redline which is the same car.

A guy on camaroz28.com dynoed one of the supercharged ones and put down like 200 rwhp bone stock, running rich as all hell (like 10:1 if I recall). That's wayyyy over the 205 hp crank rating with room for pretty huge improvement with a tune...

I would be interested to see if with a tune they couldn't slap down a stock SRT-4, close already...

There has to be something done to it, GM usually doesn't make ringers, just ford....lol. Plus every dynojet is diffent( I've put down 190rwhp and 220rwhp with the same setup in my truck, the 190rwhp was consistant though)

Yeah, it was actually 241.9 on a mustang dyno....who knows how accurate that thing is. I like the SS's would most rather prefer the supercharged version without the shopping cart handle wing--but on certain colors it looks good on the car.

Actually my consistant 190's came on a dynojet, and the rouge 220 was on a different dynojet....lol. BTW, the wing looks good on the red cars only.....IMO. And I still say it had to have had at least computer programming, or it measured a banzai drop to start the rollers.....lol.

To answer the orginal question compared to any ls1 they are not fast. I think they run mid 14's.

they are capable of running with a early SRT4. which can be a handleful for a L98 car.

rated 205, they are underated. more like 240 crank. they can move pretty quick

pulley swap and tune/exhaust.. your looking at mid high 13's EASY on street tires.

Any Mazda car will out handle anything in the Chevy line lesser than a Z28 as well. Not to mention last longer.

my sis hasnt let me drive the 3 yet but it feels like a solid car while she was driving me around. motor is really quiet. gots some nice brakes too, big rotors. i never driven a cavalier or cobalt. but i heard the cobalt handles better than the cavalier and the SS is a heck of a car i heard in the handling department.

i cant wait to sneak it out for a test drive.. its not the peppy 2.3 liter tho but still, looks like a fun car to drive. i mean she better let me drive it, i let her take the irocz out 2 times

not true. i work on these cars everyday, and let me tell you, Mazdas are not as reliable as everyone thinks

ive seen plenty of GMs with over 200k miles on them and still running strong, but the only Mazdas ive seen pushing that number are the older RX7s

its a myth that just cause its badged from the far east that its automatically better/more reliable than something with an american badge

Well, for a a car at 15k (average daily driver) a year to reach 200k, it would have to be 12 years olds or so. A 92 protege is not the type of car he's talking about

well, if hes talking about new cars, why did he mention the Z28? it hasnt been produced for 4 years now

keep in mind he said "any" Mazda, there was no specification on the year. besides, if we ARE talking about new cars... most of GMs new lineup contain engines that are fairly new designs (a few years old at best) and theres no way to predict how theyll do in terms of reliability just yet

sooo... either he was talking about older cars, or, hes making a guess that just because its a Mazda its more reliable than a GM

Let's say any Mazda car post 1996. Plus, I'm speaking in general, everyone knows you can make a car last a long time if you take car of it.

Everytime I go to a chevy lot, last time I was looking at a 96 SS impala, I told the sales guy "Nice new cavalier", and he proceded to say they were alot faster than the impala.....lol. I also caught up with one this last weekend in my s10....I am a low 15 sec truck n/a....but at speed, its a whole new ball game. The guy is going like 40 in a 55, so I kick it to 3rd and go to pass him, realize it has the shopping cart wing on it and think to myself, "oh well, I'll give it a try", and pretty matched his speed until I hit 4th, which I then proceeded to pull on him......that is the first ss s/c I've raced.....and for 40mph, it sucked! I have to rep for dimers everywhere since my truck is an exotic amoung mules.....lol. I also laughed at the guy for putting a fart can muffler on the SS cobalt......prolly flows worse than factory.....HAHAHAHA

ive seen plenty of GMs with over 200k miles on them and still running strong, but the only Mazdas ive seen pushing that number are the older RX7s

its a myth that just cause its badged from the far east that its automatically better/more reliable than something with an american badge

LIKE MINE LIKE MINE....

but then again I beat up on C5 vettes that stall
sorry had to bring it up again.

though yes mine is down. and ify ou know your rx7's tpi you know about the good old pulsation damper.

mine broke. had it jury rigged with jbweld for a while holding the screw in place. worked like that for about 1-2 years. but then broke out lost the screw and so now it's down till I can get a second pulsation damper OR just get a 89-91 intake manifold

but still runs strong with something of 210k+ miles on the odometer.

other mazda's I won't quote cause I don't know.

Andrew
dobut it flows worse.
most fart cans are a straight through design. only question there is does it use louvers or perforated core.
either way much better then a baffled design though I would say

as far as the cobalt ss if that is s/c and I think runs mid 14's and your only a 15 second truck I woudl say he can't drive very well

Yeah, you can get the NA Cobalt SS with that wing as well, so don't feel so proud *sigh* (the proud comment was not towards you vwdave..)

I've actually considered picking up a Cobalt SS this coming year if I get a decent job in a few months. I'd love to pick one up and get it into the 12s and drive it every day. I'd still keep at least one of my f-bodies, though I'm not sure which one.

gah even if it was slower i'd rather drive a V8 car than a boosted 4 banger. I like rumble more than I do bumble.

I would have to guess my problem at the tracks is the fact 1&2nd gears spin(4.10 rear) and I have been known to spin into 3rd. Plus I shift to 4th well before the end of the 1/4. I think my truck has more in it, but traction just isn't there. Plus 1/2 shifts go by really quick. The truck is actually faster than the 89 SHO taurus I had......and those are 15.5 and lower(depends on driver). I am pretty sure that my truck could probably take one from 40.....btw, It couldn't have been a n/a one....I raced one of those in the 99 sable I have and only lost by like a car and a half....plus I beat the sable with my truck by a good 7-8 car lengths(with fouled plugs) and the SS I encountered with the truck had a nice whine to it, especially up high.
Andrew
edit: I'm going back home this next weekend, so I shall look for whomever owns it, plus I have a challenge fro am last gen prelude.....we shall see, he runs 15.3 in the 1/4......btw, I am trapping in the very high 90's right now, if that matters....the truck loads up and goes

Depending on how high of 90s, you should be anywhere from mid to low 14s

I wasnt ragging on you.

The reason I like driving my boosted 4 banger, is I can beat most of the cars on this forum, still have excellent reliability, and get 25mpg beating the hell out of it.

I went from Miami to Daytona at 85mph, at times in stop and go, at times going in excess of 120mph. I still averaged 28mpg doing so.

Plus, it rides ALOT better, more luxury, smoother, IMO looks better than most and when it rains I am not all over the place.

I love my camaro as a drag racing platform. But give me both sets of keys and tell me I can only drive one, it would have to be the VW.
