Newer 300GT...

WHile I'm not much of a race person, there's a kid at my school who's got a twin turbo 3000GT, the nice ones.. All wheel drive and all.. I've driven it before, very impressive.. This isn't a rivalry per se, just a friendl competition between two car lovers.. He likes mine, I like his..
That said.. When my car is ready, 350 HO, plus a T-5 or T-56.. Stock rear end, I'd assume, from an 82 Z28.. Any thoughts? His car is very nice, but the turbo lag is noticable..
It's kind of a , Gas, moderate response, THERE WE GO!

Proof that the imports can be very nice, I like his car. But then again, it's not (ri...ce) at all, so that makes the difference. PLus he isn't cocky and likes my car too, I guess we're even. From a stop, who will win? They're both heavy cars.

They are pretty heavy (i think near 4000 lbs?), but anyone with a grand or so could probably up the boost/fuel, dyno-tune it, and make it move. If its stock, I'd guess high 13s assuming he slips the cluth to get a decent launch. With a moderate 350 build (H/C/I), manual or auto w/ higher stall TC, 3.73/4.10s (or the closest GM equivalent), mild suspension (springs, struts, control arms, panhard, etc.), it should definately run 13 flat/high 12s. While your at building the motor, budget in 3K for a blower kit and shave off a second or so

Not sure on how much you want to buld, but if it were me, I'd do the same - wow, its easy to build a car when its not your money

depends on what he's got done to it. Stock they aren't very scary, but like most boosted cars they can be made fast.

what's your exact motor specs, and his exact mod specs? then i can tell you more accurately.

I'm not gonna lie, 3000GT's are really sexy cars. I was thinking of picking one of those up instead of my Camaro. If it's the true twin turbo...Are those things pretty freakin' fast? Like high 12's fast?

some I think have managed to get mid 13's stock but those aren't too common.

from a laucnh you don't have much chance if he isn't afraid of the car and giving a hard launch. even moer so if he has good tires.
from a roll... eh give or take I would give him slight edge.

this is both stock cars in good running shape with decent drivers though.

as we all know things can change though depending on anything and everything

Can't tell you for sure, but the motor is a 350 HO with a hotter cam (I don't remember which one..)

And yes, his 3000GT IS the real, true, twin turbo one. Very nice car. Rather comfortable, and essentially stock..

He said he estimates about 320 HP, I'm not sure the validity..
Also, he'll launch is hard, and with the AWD, that worries me.. Though, I figure the time for me to hook up will be only a little longer than the time it takes his real power to turn on, so that's good..
I get the feeling he'll edge me out a bit, but not by much...
And don't kill me, but I like his car too.

I attached a picture of it..

EDIT: I always type 300GT...

Pretty sweet car.

Damn are those things heavy, but, it's a turbo car. Just a few mods and he can run 12s EASY.

I used to work with a guy who had the exact same car - twin turbo, red, etc... (Never raced him though.)

You might tell your friend to be careful with those launches - the word on these cars is that they can be made to be decently quick (I've heard of some running 12.5s), but the car's weak point is the transmission, & when they go away, it's going to hurt his wallet just a bit. (To the tune of about $3000...)

Anyway, since he's a friend, just run him for the hell of it, & come back & tell us how it went!

Oh, I will, I just wanted to get a measure on the car as a whole... I like it, and I'll be sure to pass that on to him, as I've known him to launch it pretty hard a few times...
That said, I still am always amused that the twin turbo motor puts out less power at the crank than a Chevy small block V8...

Yeah iirc I've heard one or two bad things about those trannys, although it seems like hit or miss to me.

Stock it'll run a high 13 with a big clutch dump. It's roughly on par to a bone stock LT1 car in the quarter, although I believe it will trap a bit lower than the Fbody.

vr-4 are in the high 13's stock you can get them to the mid 12's with a little work but after that it is like you hit a brick wall the stock mini turbos are maxed, out the tranny and transfer case are lucky to get there, and i here the engine can't take any more boost

IIRC that's why they haven't been as popular with the performance crowd.

Agreed. You can still find dodge stealth rt twin turbo deals for next to nothing if you look hard enough. They are realy sweet cars imo..... Weight is about 3,600lbs if my memory serves me correctly (usually doesn't though lol).
