There were a lot of things the montes didn't get that the 442s and Gn's got like the 8.5(which I have now) but I really wanted a GN but I just kept looking at the monte and thought that it look kind of like a third gen and I like third gens.Must be that front nose.I just like the looks of the monte better. It is sad, the last full framed two door carbed car that GM made was so underpowered from the factory. They should have got the L98.

Are you saying the 89 TTA has a different 5.7 motor than an 89 TA? Or a differnent motor than a 91 TA or a Z28, for that matter, which in 91 the HP rating increased? TTA stands for Turbo?

Unless I am mistaken TTA means (turbo trans am). They are 3.8 turbo v6.Like the grand nationals.TA Trans am is L98 350 V8.Same as 350 iroc or z28.Is this what you are talking about? The TTA's are very rare.

I edited my post at the same time. Saw another post about an 89 turbo and change it. What was the last year of the turbo?

Only one year. 1989. Only year a V6 was ever offered in a TA.

maybe in 83' when the turbo regals were still carbed, but in 84' (and 85') they came injected. ratings were 200hp/300tq. best stock run ive heard of was high 14s. most were mid - low 15 sec cars though

i used to own an 85' GN. even though it wasnt intercooled it was very fun to tweak. and of course the turbo whistle/sneeze was sooo addicting! wish i never sold it

Back in the day , we had an 84 SS. My buddy traded is 84 SS for a 84 GN. That car was a beaut, even with LS seats. But it couldn't beat the SS. From a stop, roll, anywhere, except after 100mph. With only 3 gears in the Monte, it was starting to wheeze. Neither of us took either car to the track to verify any numbers though.

He eventually traded that GN for an 86 GN. The Monte never could do anything with that.

Good drivers can get mid 12s out of an 03 cobra. Free mods yield low 12s.. They also weigh a good 400 lbs heavier curb than a TTA. They are faster but the TTA is always going to be a rarer car. If you want flat out speed, the 03 Cobra is easier and simpler solution. I'd say the better comparison for the TTA is a 4th gen Supra. Same territory stock, same response to modifications, same killer top end, same indestructible rotating assembly, cept a TTA can actually hook hard

What do you consider "FREE" mods.

i agree with you that the TTA might hook harder than supras, but same response to mods and indestructable rotating assembly might be alittle off.

ofcourse both can handle mods well and respond well to minor changes..mainly uping the boost...

but i think the supra's motor/drivetrain is a hell of alot stronger than TTA's. i know supras have pushed well into the 800whp range on stock internals and i have heard as high as 1000hp. not sure if GNs and TTA internals can support that or not. but i know that 9 bolt and stock 200r4 wont hold that LOL

There have been quite a few stock block GN's in the 9's. If its tuned right, the engine can hold up to some serious power. The 2004R can also live nicely when built right. Those have also been in the 9's. The 9 bolt can survive a few very low 1.5x short times but then starts howling madly.

TTA's can easily be made to run low 11's on pump gas/alky. I did it in mine. Heck there is a guy trying to run 9's on pump gas in his TTA. Might have already done it, have to check. Pretty stout if you ask me

Yes, Julio. Have to shoot him an email to see what's up. Obviously, I don't get over to tb.com that much anymore. And the TTA list is dead

Bonestock TTA's @ sea level are good for 13.4-13.6 @ about 100-102. Anything faster are freaks and slower are dogs.

Re: How fast is a stock 89 TTA (really)???

I have seen times from 13.3 to 14.0 with the TTA driven properly dead stock. Keep in mind that the faster of the breed could keep up with the GNX and could touch 160mph under the right conditions. I guess they were pushing 270 to 280hp with a 200lb weight reduction compared to the GNs.

Now I'm not going to pick on the Cobras - they are fast stock and very fast when moded, but a low buck moded TTA is going to run just as fast as those cars - turbos have a lot more upside than superchargers.

I hope a forged straight 6 can hold more power than a V6 - but a fully worked over GN based motor is going to easily match the Toyota's in power, plus have more low end due to having more displacement. I laugh at the 1,000hp+ Supras and several seconds of lag until the big turbos kick in and everything goes by in fast forward.

A correct VIN number would help.

1G5FW2172KL213329 is Pilot Car # 1
1G5FW2174KL252214 is TTA # 1550

Thats kind of funny considering LT1 F-Bodies walk 3rd gens and average 230-250whp depending on the trans. They aren't lighter either. 3rd and 4th gen are both around 3400-3500lbs.

So a bone stock L98 putting 215whp? Maybe with a T56 swap, but not with a auto. L98s dyno right around 180whp IIRC.

As for the TTAs. Mid-high 13s seems about right. The best comparison would be an LS1 F-Body and with just a couple dozen more ponies, they can manage to net them a low 13 with a good driver and a 6 speed.

Again, this is on average. We all know there are factory freaks out there. Like some of the LS cars making close to 330whp bone stock. But please don't put blatantly false information.

Re: How fast is a stock 89 TTA (really)???

Back in the late 80s i worked for Conley'sPerformance Plus and if you are familiar with the name you also know we did TONs of GNs, along with syclones, typhoons vettes and a few mustangs.
We had a few TTA owners and they had no problems running 13.3s at sea level with that said traction was VERY good at HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK which is now Royal Purple Speedway.
I had thepleasure in making many passes with customer cars aswell as my own. On average the best races were the syclone and TTA heads up in stock form , the best run EVER was a TTA running 13.1 at 108 and the syclone 13.3 at 105. I truly miss those days with AMERICAN TURBO engineering. These cars were a decade ahead of any other AMERICAN car!

Here's a new question for this post. What car will be worth more 10 years from now, in the same condition and mileage? There were alot more than 1500 03-04 Cobras made.. i bet a TTA in primo condition will get 35 grand...
Nailed it!
