My chances??

Im just wondering what my chances would be in a race. An old friend from school just bought himself a third gen. Its a 89' RS Camaro 350 TBI auto car. Absouletly nothing done to it. He has a system in the back too. I have a 86' Camaro, fresch 2.8, ported heads and intake, K&N's, gutted air box, ghetto ram air, MSD 6AL, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, no muffler and a high-flow cat. Im getting an adjustable FPR and a B&M shift kit soon. Also I have a decent amount of weight removed including all a/c components, back seats, fronts are fourth gen seats, no front speakers, Aluminum rims, removed the charcoal canister and EGR crap, and the battery is relocated to the back. How bad am I gonna lose or do I stand some sort of chance?? Thanks

Well Im not too sure if it even is a 350 but he claims it is and it says so on the air cleaner, if its a 305 thats even better. Ill have to see if I can get the code off the block or something..

I could put an air cleaner on my 305 and say that it is a 408 LS1 as well. The RS never came with a 350 and if he did swap a 350 in there are a lot of things he is not telling you because a 3B0 TGI could mean a crap 70's 150hp motor running on the stock 305 chip. It could also mean a 385 fastburn 350 crate motor. I would find out some more info if you can. Look for casting numbers on the block and bedind the upper portion of the block on the driver side (kinda under the firewall) you should see a 5.0 of 5.7 stamping.

Either way 305 or 350 TBI wouldn't the V6 lose?

Even if it's a 305 or a 350, the 2.8 will get worked.

It most likely isn't a 350. Check like shifty said for the 5.0L or 5.7L casting.

He isnt mechanicaly skilled enough to swap the engine. Its what came in the car when he bought it. If I do a 50 shot of nitrous could I pull it off, if not that then a 5-speed swap?? I have some extra cash and can afford either of them. Thanks for all input thus far.

the N20 will give you better results. In fact you'll most likely go slower with the T-5.

although imo I'd save the cash for a V8

Alright thanks. But I thought 5-speed cars were faster?? With a good driver obviously, I started out driving stick so thought maybe it would be better. And as for the V8 swap Im gonna do that after I get home from basic when I have money. Ive put a good amount of work into the six and wouldnt mind seeing it beat a V8 F-bod...

5-speeds can typically trap a little higher if they're powershifted perfectly. There in lies the key. You have to drive perfectly. And they're very inconsistant for bracket racing. And they're harder to launch. Autos are much more consistant and easier to drag race with.

Of course, the fun factor is always much higher with a stick. That's why I bought a 6-speed Camaro

Well I dont think Id have any trouble launching. Gonna have a posi and the tires I got a pretty chunky.. I launch with the auto at about 2500rpm just from stalling it up and it has no problem hooking with the one-legger rear...
