My car sucks right now. Yeah it's an 87 Z with a nasty 305 TPI and highway gears. Not to mention having 140k miles on it and a collapsed lifter. So anyway my buddy has a 2005 silverado 2500 with a duramax diesel. I humored him and raced him. I got the holeshot and was ahead for about 60 ft. then he killed me. He got me by at least three lengths. I got killed by a diesel truck. I hold my head low. He has the edge box and some other mods including a turbo back exhaust. He estimates around 600 horses and around 1000 lb/ft. That truck runs like a raped ape. I am now ordering my parts for a 383. can't decide between an lt1 intake, hsr, or a pro ram. I told him he should be really proud of beating a tired 305 running on 7 cylinders. Not to mention I paid a thousand bucks for my ride compared to his 30 grand. at least it was a Chevy.

600hp and 1000 lb ft tq?

I doubt its that much, but i know they are pretty quick. When I went to the track some guy was running a 6 speed powerstroke with a custom chip, bullydog level 5, Huge air intake, 80mm turbo, banksfull exhaust with slicks.

he ran low 12s

I hate to say the power strokes don't hold a candle to the duramax right now. I make the power stroke engine block and heads at work. This is in over a 5000lb truck so it is making some power.....I believe the edge box may make a little more power than the bully dog stuff. I estimate my car to be in the mid 15's. not for long though.
----------
The durmax makes around 325hp from the factory and over 600 lb/ft and runs 17's at best so his estimates are feasible. These diesels have a 4000ish redline. I would say his truck would run hugh 13's. This thing launches like a rocket in 4wd. He is worried about his tie rod ends breaking. My neck hurt after one his launches.

A modded diesel isn't anything to be ashamed about getting beaten by. I still think one of the coolest tihngs is seeing a built diesel take off breaking all 4 loose and billowing out black smoke..... badass.

I guarantee he's making nowhere near as much power as he thinks though. I's say he's probably around 350rwhp and about 800 or so rwtq give or take. I've ridden in a Cummins putting out 468hp to the rears and 1109tq to the rear wheels. It's freeking insane. It's funny seeing the whole back quarter panel of the guys truck, it's just covered in black.

Anyways, not a horrible death though.

those estimates based on trucks with similar mods were at the flywheel.

Umm, yeah the 2006 Mack i was just in only puts out 485hp.. so 600hp is a stretch..

The HP is too high (should be in the 450 range) but the toque output seems about right. None the less modern diesels are super easy to make monster power.

The edge box gives a gain of 150 hp alone. That would put it around 475hp. It is now running a **** load more boost in addition to a full exhaust system. The 600hp estimate is not too hard to imagine. There are few other tweaks he has done to it that I do not recall.

I wouldn't be too ashamed of losing to a diesel truck - a few years ago, I was on a 2-into-1 highway on-ramp with some kind of diesel pickup in the other lane. I didn't think anything of it until we were at about 30 or so & he punched it - I tell you what, if I hadn't had the L98, he would've chewed me up & spit me out! I was like !

And with the mods that are available for them now, I won't even give 'em an even break if we're in a situation like that now - I take 'em too seriously to "play" like that... A modded diesel is no joke!

true that, but the black smoke does look cool even if it does cause he polar ice caps to melt.

Thanks, but I know what the black smoke is. And I still think it looks badass.

You do realize that diesel engines are a hell of a lot more efficient then gas engines right? It sure as hell ain't diesels that are causing the ice caps to melt.....

Don't laugh to hard but when I went down to the track last week running an 8.65 my main competition was a dodge turbo diesel not the 06 GT. GT was running 8.9-9.25.The dodge was spraying a 200 shot he was running 8.7-8.9.I almost got smoked by a 6000lb diesel. That would be really funny.

Hmmm. I wonder why a diesel would be spraying N2O when they could be adding methanol for the same effect?

Interesting side note - I went to the Bonneville Salt Flats for Speedweek this week, & the only vehicles that you could instantly find during their runs were the diesels...

1) Just because an engine may be more efficient, doesn't mean it's run at efficient levels and isn't polluting more than another engine. **I don't know a lot about diesels, but that statement stands no matter what we're talking about.

2)I'm surprised the guy was running nitrous as well. Most diesel guys run propane.
