05-06 GT vs the L98

On my way to school the other day I pulled up next to a 05 or 06 blue mustang GT. I look over and see some older dude in the drivers seat. So i thought to myself this guy doesnt wanna race. As i look away i hear him rev his engine up at me. I guess i was wrong. The light is about to turn i hear him rev it up pretty high. When the light turned green i put it down, and he drops it. We both spin pretty bad, and were door to door up until 30. When he shifted to second i heard his tires chirp, and i pulled 1/2 car on him. I held his lead to 85 mph where we then had to slow down. Very close race.

My car- 89 Irocz L98- Headers/catback/ported aftermarket runners and plenum/ highflow intake manifold/Hypertech chip/msd ignition/ tb bypass/ modded maf/ air foil/ K&Ns/ and remaped injectors.

Nice. Thats what I like to hear, a new mustang half a car behind the 20 year old Camaro. Some things never change...

That new mustang is pretty stout, 300hp is nice, it does seem a bit heavy.

I like the new gts. Im running 13.4 at 100, so i assume they are capeable of the same times with a good driver.

You should try it beaing able to beat up on LS1 Vettes and Camaros... its good times!

ALso they would be capable of a mid 13 with good driving and good conditions. Ours went 13.9 with a passenger, in crappy track conditions (someone said 2500-3000 elevation but that I cant say) on its very first track outing and 1000 miles on the car. If all goes well and my brother can drive it this weekend, should have a deeper 13 from it. It is also bone stock power wise, and if anything weighs more than stock!

The best ive seen from one was a 13.4. With good traction you might be able to pull off 13.3's. I cant wait to see what the new Shelby gt500's do. Those things look nasty. I hear you can rent them now, but you still can not buy one? kinda strange.

Down at the 1/8mile track I was murdering them and they weren't even stock, they were running 8.8-9.2 but that is the 1/8mile and I am sure that in the 1/4 they would put up a much better fight. They are still definitly faster then the old 260hp gt.I drove an 05 auto and it didn't seem that fast but I bet like all 4.6's that it likes a stick for those high rpms.I never have been in a stock GT mustang with an auto that impressed me.I am sure that the next generation GT will be pretty fast to try to keep up with the new camaro.

I think ours ran an 8.9 on that pass and again same conditions, bad track passenger, and bone stock!

I have already seen some GT500 passes, but the cars had some mods and were running 10s so Im not sure how much can be taken from that!

Your 1/8th is close to mine (8.4 on radials) but then I went 12.9 @ 107.6 in the 1/4 !

Yeah, that's the difference between a 5 spd with decent ratios and an automatic with lousy ones.

Not to mention a couple hundred lbs you'd be feeling at the far end of the track.

I was under the impression the Mustangs at 3rd gen Camaro age were about 400lbs lighter, not worth 8mph, but would defintely impact trap speed. Having owned a few 700R4 cars, I will agree, the ratios arn't too hot, especially in comparison to a well spaced 5spd. I'm sure the combination of the two has an impact, and the mustangs obviously got more motor, which always shows up at the far end of the track. L98 does love the 1/8th mile, absolutely killer stoplight motor, even with a tame converter and gears.

This is true, also not sure if those runs were on a DR or not, but I had a weak 2.0 60' on 17" street tires. Could have knocked it down but it was my first and only time on a radial. And we wont get into what the car ran before and after the trans swap... gained a healthy 2-3 mph then another 3 or so with long tubes and a mid pipe!

I don't know about that. Even with the stock TPI base and runners, with a little plenum porting, I still manage to pick up 24-26 MPH on the top half. I've had decent luck edging out carbed cars on the top half which pretty much goes against everything I've ever heard.

WOW 24-26 mph on the top half. I was gaining 22 on my street tire runs and 20-22 on my slick passes. Id LOVE 26 mph, Id be trapping 111-112!

It's weird, I went from 80.05 to 105.11 on ET Streets. I backed that up with 78.76 to 104.64. I'm assuming it's the 3.06 first gear and 1.62 second that keeps the MPH down for the 1/8 or maybe the 3.23's. On the 105.11 pass, the carbed small block chevy powered Regal in the other lane cut a similar 60 ft., within .05 of mine. At the 1/8, his MPH was 79.86 and we're still door to door by the 1/4 he's 101.2 and I'm a car or so ahead.

I would be happy with that if I were you. When I trapped 78-80 I was puling 101 or so in the 1/4. Now I trap 85-86 and righy in the middle of 106 mph!

I'm happy with it but it just strikes me as odd. Typically TPI doesn't shine on the top half, especially considering I haven't really done much to help it breath better.
