smoked by 90s model V8 t-bird.

Stopped at a light this evening next to a kid in a 90s model V8 thunderbird. Didnt know for sure if he was gonna race so i didnt bring up the RPMs. when the light turned green he took off and just pulled me till about 55 probabaly. I have a bone stock 91 RS with 5 speed. Well i have flows but anyways. I was wondering what RPM you other 305 tbi guys are launching at. either i bog or smoke the tires. I think i might have a clogged fuel filter so that isnt helping haha. But anyways any input would be awesome on how to wake this thing up on a budget.

i really need to man. but living in CA is a bitch with the smog laws. and im not even sure if its worth dumpin money into the L03. all my 5.0 buddys are just tellin me its not worth it lol. They wont even smog the car with an open element on it. Any of you guys have some quick smog legal L03s?

A few years ago my man sold his (show quality) Berlinetta to a junk yard because he couldnt smog it. He needed the money but no one would buy the thing despite all the horses it must have had. That was the most expensie mistake ever. I hate to get smoked too.

should have posted it on here...I'm sure there's plenty of people on this site willing to pay more than the yard did. sorry to hear of the misfortune, though.

Yeah, me too. He only got like $500 bucks for it (8 or 9 years ago)...Stupid California laws.
I wish I would have found this site before I bought my third gen because i have learned so many things and in retrospect I think I would have went with a z28 or iroc or I think I would have picked a better year... but she's mine now so I'm gonna make her shine if it kills me. I just lost my will to race.

Some minor changes and it could be smog legal.

This is what it moves like in a 5,800 lbs G20 Conversion van with 3.08 gears and P255/70/R15 tires

I kept racing my fouth gen agaist my 99 Caddy Dev, but lost each time. It had a north star in it so I learned to just cheat. Not sure if t birds have same engine or similar.

Re: smoked by 90s model V8 t-bird.

Hard to say what it was, could have been a Supercoupe (supercharged 3.8, absolutely no way of knowing if its going to be close or if its going to blow you off the road) or even a 4.6 car. I ran my moms 97 at the track, its fully loaded and it ran a 15.4@93 with only a catback on factory issued street tires. So if you're running 16's yes its going to pull away from you.

Time to put a better exhaust on at least, and get rid of the puny cam in there.

Re: smoked by 90s model V8 t-bird.

I just ran a 90's T-Bird 2 days ago, V8 model, dual exhaust, 4.6 I'm sure. He jumped me at the line (didn't know he was gonna race), but I stood on it and was along side as I chirped second. He (the driver)had his two young teens in the car, I think he was trying to show off, you should have seen his eyebrows raise when I came by and chirped the rubber alongside his door.

Re: smoked by 90s model V8 t-bird.

original comment, it may have been a supercoupe which if in good shape is right up there with a tpi car. my brotherinlaw had a 94 sc beefed up tranny, exhaust, bigger tb, and some other boltons. and it was pretty quick, roasted the tires and was a ball to drive. gave my beemer m3 a good run.

This is what a modified super coupe can do.

Back to the question. The same thing happens to me, either bog down or burn-out. I usually try to take off about 2200 - 2500. Once I get to 3000, it'll just fishtail.

Thats why the gas pedal is a proportional control, not an on/off switch. Just takes practice. Stick is a little more complicated, but not too bad. Try launching w/ fwd and low tq/high rpm motors. That takes some work/clutch abuse.
