Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
Last I heard GM discontinued all of the RWD platform vehicles because of the EPA taking over the emissions requirements. As for will third gens keep up, sure why wouldn't they. The older SBC engines have the largest following of any engine ever manufactured. If you're asking will they keep up stock for stock, the answer to that is obvious.

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
i hate the be the a-hole in this thread, but why do people always ask these questions? do they think that the body styling of the car has all to do with how fast it is? from what info is out there the new camaro will have something like 400 horse. no thirdgen ever came with anything like 400 horsepower. of course the "fifth gen" cars will be faster stock vs stock. as far as modified cars go, it all depends on what has been done. Sure a third gen could be built to be the fastest car in the world, but so could any other car, it just takes money.
but to just answer the question. Stock vs Stock, the new camaro, provided it will have a 400 horse ls2 and not be limited to a 4 banger ecotec motor
, will crush any thirdgen, no if ands of buts.

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
The V6 Camaro will probably take on the fastest stock L98 3rd gen. The Camaro is still a go. It will have the LS3, which is 430hp in the C6. So it might be a little less because of exhaust but pretty close to that.
LS2 is dead. L76, L92, and LS3 are a go. LS7 is gone after 2008.

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
Hmm that's just a bit off topic but 5000 for a 97 LT1 car... not to bad not to great it's all going to depend on what kind of shape and the mileage. The LT1 cars are in alot less demand ever since the LS1 came out in 1998. I think both of the 4th gen varieties are uglier than the 3rd gen but the LS1 is the future and the headlights look way better on the 98 ups.

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
ive read that in 09' the Z06 will actually be renamed Z07 and feature the supercharged 427 motor. after that, for the new for 2010 C7, that the base Vette motor will be the 505hp 427, while the Z06 will get the supercharged version
has that info changed?

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
There is a chart with engine dates. I'll see if I can find it again.
So far I'm having no luck finding it. But the LS9, from what I remember, is going to be a 6.2 supercharged. No more 7.0 when this one is done.

I have a 02 formula and a 87 formula. The 87 has a rebuilt 350 and has plenty of mods. The 02 is stock and would embarrass my 87. By the time you hit the gas and start sinking into the seat you are going 60+. I was doing 70 and punched it to pass a truck and it looked like a clock climbing in speed. Top speed is 165. Now 7 years later? Should be interesting.

Re: Third gens vs fifth gens
Demand really has nothing to do with it. CAFE has everything to do with it. Just like the LS1 and LS2 are gone, they weren't fuel efficient enough. The LS3, L76, and L92 get much better gas mileage and are more emissions friendly.
Pretty much the biggest reason why engine life spans don't last that long anymore. Nothing wrong with the engines as all of them are great runners.

For those curious about CAFE;
"Lawmakers in the Senate already have begun debate over the bill, which includes an increase in corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) to 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km) for cars and trucks, combined, by model year 2020. Light trucks today must achieve 24 mpg (9.8 L/100 km) by 2011, while cars have been required to average 27.5 mpg (8.5 L/100 km)for the last 17 years....
Auto makers and their dealers consider the increase unrealistic and say it fails to take into account consumer demand and marketplace realities. A compromise from senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) would provide separate standards for cars and trucks, with the former getting 36 mpg (6.5 L/100 km) by 2022 and the latter achieving 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) by 2025"....
^ To be quite honest with everyone, the need for any engine displacing over 400 cubic inches has since become meaningless. With the advent of forced induction, as well as today's head, cam and PCM technology, mega horsepower can be had simply on tap. However, if there is ENOUGH DEMAND from the public, legislation can easily be changed. The majority must win, afterall, we are not communists.... yet!

This is one of those classic questions where, and as someone here had said in the past.....
"The Camaro wins, even if it still loses, the camaro wins".
Or something like that.
