mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
one of my friends just bought a mazdaspeed 6, these things make about 270hp, and 280tq, and weigh about 3600 lbs..... here are my stats since i havent dynoed my car yet....
1989 Firebird Formula T-tops
355 L98 block, 10:1 compression so i have to run 93 octane, and i'm tuned pretty well (i do it myself with moates' stuff)
stock TPI
full edelbrock exhaust
holley adjustable fpr
holley 255 lph fuel pump
SLP LS1 24lb injectors
255 yokohama avid tires in the rear
16" gta rims
stock 2.73 10 bolt posi rear end
700R4 tranny rebuilt with TCI kit, valve body set to heavy duty
K&N air filter....... (drawing for straws haha)
about 3300 lbs (i think)
(if i would guess i'd say my motor is making 250hp 370tq, being optimistic)
we have a spot that we race, its exactly 1/4 mile.... who do you think would win this one?? we'll probably race tonight, so i'll let ya'll know, but take a guess plz!

Re: mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
Not that I condone street racing and all that, but I do own a Mazdaspeed 6 (and I had an LS1 car, and now have an L98 car with similar power to my LS1). The Mazdaspeed 6 will run roughly LT1 times. I've seen 14.00@99 mph quoted for them and that feels about right (it's slower than my LS1 car was and probably slower than my current car, but my current car is quite light). So, if you can run LT1 times (stock), you're probably going to be close.

Should be a good race. With the auto make sure you get him outta the hole and you should be able to fend him off for a while. The higher you go the more he gains the advantage though. The Speed6's are pretty quick and are gaining a decent aftermarket to support them. If you think you are in the 13's then you should take him, especially since it's a new car for him.

Get some gear and throw that stock TPI in the garbage...then you dont have to worry about beating him.

Re: mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
If you're smart, you won't tell your friend to shift from first to second at 6,700 rpm and then shift at 6k after that. The Mazda motor doesn't make much (except noise) after 6,000 rpm even though Mazda gave it a 6,700 redline. It feels like it just runs out of turbo (and it falls flat), but that would explain why it makes boost NOW and with very little lag.
If he can drive, you'll probably have your hands full. However, it's a really tricky car to drive (light flywheel, AWD grip and a clutch like a light switch...on or off, not much in between). We bought it for my wife and she loves it, but she still complains about the clutch and the fact that it's still tricky to drive, even after 16,000 miles. Ask him if you can drive it, you'll understand (99% of the people who hop in it stall it, and about 85% stall it more than once when they first try to get it rolling).
With all that said, it's preferable that you find your local drag strip on grudge night and settle this one.....
Be safe.

So? Who won? I didn't know that was AWD, that gives him the traction edge i'd say.

Re: mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
Oh yea, they are very much AWD. The Mazdaspeed 3 is not, but the MS6 is. You can unload the clutch in the pouring rain and floor it and it simply goes straight. The car is great and traction is never an issue (it has an open front dif, and a torsen in the rear). None of the other Mazda 6's are AWD, but the Mazdaspeed version is (and it's a ton of fun in the snow).

If they made an auto version of the Speed6 that would probably be my next daily driver. I've gotten lazy with the Maxima. I love shifting the T56 in the Camaro.. but I'm to the point where a nice automatic is what I want for the daily driver

Re: mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
ah we didnt get a chance to run last night, we'll see if it happens tonight though.... i'm definitely gonna smoke my yoko's up before the race though, those things grip pretty good for all seasons, especially when they are heated. i think i'll get him off the line even though he has awd, those things are probably hard to launch and since its new, he's not gonna want to roast his clutch racing an 89 firebird that he thinks he can beat haha...... so we'll see, i'll keep you all updated!

Re: mazda speed 6 vs. me :)
For reference, the MS6 has a 155 mph top speed limiter in it....and they apparently will do 155 mph (very close to 6,000 rpm in 6th, which is right before power takes a dive). I've not run ours up there, but I mention that to give you some idea of what the car is capable of doing.
