1982 406 camaro vs 2003 cobra

Mine 1982 camaro

406 small block chevy balanced and blue printed with
k&n air filter, holley 750 carb (quick change
secondary kit installed as well as upgraded metering
plate and main jet extensions and 1" spacer) victor
jr. intake protopline cast iron heads keith black
pistons 6" eagle rods comp cams extreme energy 284 cam
heddman long tube headers into custom 3" dual exhaust
with bullet mufflers. full msd ignition with 6al box,
blaster ss coil, distributor and plug wires. bbk
underdrive pulleys weiend water pump electric fan, 140
amp polished alternator/optima battery and aluminum
aftermarket radiator.

turbo 350 with shift kit, deep aluminum pan, hughes
2500 stall converter, b&m tranny cooler and shifter.
3:73 gears and posi.

His is a 2003 mustang cobra I know he has some minor mods done to it but not sure what.
He wants to do it on street tires which I think will give him an advantage because of traction. What you guys think?

Also there is one of those mitsubishi wrx sti's that wants to have a run. I am a little nervous on this one. I was beside him on the highway on my bike (03 gsxr1000) and the thing pulled pretty hard to 277kph ( I know damn canadians lol) Not sure what he has done either except the suspension has been all re-done. But we are running the 1/4 for both races maybe 1/2 mile.

Opinions

The two cars you plan to race...

Neither one exists.

No such things as a 2005 Cobra or a Mazda STI.

Re: 1982 406 camaro vs 2005 cobra

I seen stock 03 cobra's dyno over 360 at the wheels with a pulley and computer upgrade they put down over 420. So you better find out what mods he has!!

You got a good combo but if you really want to wake your engine up kick out about $250 on a solid cam and lifters! An get a 3500 stall or bigger. When I changed cams to a solid on my 406 it was a night and day difference. Then I built a unbalanced 2 bolt main 355 with flattops and a used solid cam it was killing mustangs that had modded 302 and 351's.

I'm not a big fan of Protoplines I had a set an never got to use them after I did my research the just don't have the flow numbers like the other brands. But that was awhile back they might have gotten better now.

Just get a cam that matches your intake and gear. I talk to Doug Herbert he knows his sh#t! He set me up with a solid roller combo for my 383 an I asked him way that cam choice and he said thats the one he races in his 383 very cool dude to talk to. You will see his advertisment in just about any car magazine. Or just go the the Drag racing forum all of those guys got suggestions on solid cam choices.

Someone said earlier that Sti's awd are slow

Re: 1982 406 camaro vs 2005 cobra

Assuming both the SVT and STI are stock you should beat the Suburu and lose to the Ford.

My old 2003 Cobra put down 391 rwhp bone stock through a dirty stock air filter (49k miles) and hot off the highway. I have since sold the car but two close friends of mine have an '05 M6 GTO and '05 STI. Both are stock and niether were remotely challenging for me in a race. Another friend of mine has a cat-back and CAI only '03 SVT, put down 420rwhp, and run's 12.5's.
