Bird vs. Bug

Okay, who do you think would win in a race between a 1984 Trans Am (stock LG-4, WS6, 700r4 auto, 3.23 posi) against a 2001 Beetle GLX (stock 1.8 turbo, automatic transmission)?

The VW should run a high 15. What's your car run?

Re: Bird vs. Bug

Just for the record, any beetle produced after 1979 isnt a "bug". Its also water cooled, a double no-no.

The VW guys would have an aneurysm.

I'm not entirely sure.
I've never had it timed, but it runs pretty strong. I'm told it will run mid- 16's.
It would probably take the V-dub in the 1/8th though because of the 305's low end torque and the Beetle's turbo lag, right?

Re: Bird vs. Bug

Wrong, the 1.8's usually spool at near 2000 RPM's.
But either way you have more torque.

Re: Bird vs. Bug

I had a run in with 1.8 turbo jetta (almost positive stock) from a dig in the country. I took off and got a good 2 1/2 cars quick then it caught up semi-slow and preceded to walk me as the turbo was screamin at WOT, haha. We went at it for longer than a quarter (country) so you might take the Beetle at a predetermined distance.

Re: Bird vs. Bug

Just be careful if you try to take on an older air-cooled bug.....You've been warned.

My 65 regularly lifted the front end & I was one of the slower guys!

My favorite local detuned a full race Bug for street use...Only ran low 12s after that...

i like this.. my 69 runs a 12.3 all motor. race all the new beetles and smash them they really are quite slow even with tuning. but if an old air cool revs next to you and it sounds like a porsche dont even bother

Re: Bird vs. Bug

The 1.8t is a good motor but its not that fast, moreover beetles are chick cars and are lame.
