Best performing Third Gen against a new mustang GT question.
Best performing Third Gen against a new mustang GT question.
Hi. I was wondering how well a Third Gen camaro would do against a newer Mustang GT. Mustang Manual tranny with the stock 3.55 gearing for the GT, and the 3.23 gears for the auto iroc-z, and both stock completely. I mean, I know that the mustang will beat it in a straight line, but how badly. (and if I'm wrong please correct me here, I'm not as knowledable on the subject of third gens as I am on my 4th gen f bodys and fords)
I believe the iroc Z is the fastest stock right(Talking camaros only here)? With 245hp on the auto, and 340 ft/lb of torque?
I only ask because I'm finishing up work on one of my other cars, and have had my eye on a 3rd gen camaro for a while now ever since I saw this really clean glossy black Iroc-Z with magnaflows, and some iroc rims on it. Really great looking car but I know they're not the most amazing at straight line speed, but happened to have pretty good handling.
Basically, I want to know how well the camaro will do against a new GT because that's going to be my benchmark for this car for a while.(I'm just finishing up my '07 C6 that's procharged and has some bolt ons, and then I'll be finishing my '06 GT, and then '02 WS6)
GT is the benchmark cause it's the slowest of all my current cars so it's something relatively small to shoot for at this time. I know what I'll be modifying already if I keep the original 350 engine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this thread, great looking cars you all have here.

well allot of people run street tires on the 05-08 stangs and just spin end up running lower 14 high 13s . they could run a lower 13 all day driven perfect .best time i ever got out of a stock l98 irocz and it was a SD 90 L98 with the 245hp and 345ft.lbs with drs i got a 13.9 a few times . I got a great set of head sports men 2,with a mild cam and some shorty headers and mine runs flat 13s all day and can pull a 12.9 if it hooks .so work will be needed .

You have a procharged C7, a newer Mustang GT, and a newer LS1 Fbody? Well if you really want a thirdgen, why not just spend the cash and make it fast?
It will take most of the free mods and bolt ons, unless your racing a poor driver. A new GT is not a hard benchmark to over come, but a new modded GT is much tougher.

The mustang has a completely different feel than any other cars I've driven and gives a way better sense of speed(being pushed into the seat, and just that torquey feel I guess) that's why I love mine. I've got a nitrous system, and some other modifications done to it. Plus it's fun when I run into the guys with an LS1/LT1 f-body and leave'em behind because they think the car's stock(the magnaflows really quiet the car down unless you're at WOT)
Then the '02 T/A WS6 is just a bolt on car, borla exhaust, headers, intake, etc.
I'm sure the Third Gen will have a different feel as well. I'm kinda leaning towards throwing an LS2 into a nice black third gen. And as much as I like the idea, I've got too many cars IMO with an LS engine, and want something different.
One of the main reasons I want one is because they just have a nice look to them when they're clean(no visual mods other than maybe some reasonable rims) and washed. To me, they're like the foxbodies. The majority easily look like ****, but when you see one with a nice black paint job, real nice shine to it, and just clean all around, they're one of the best looking cars.
I ran a friend a pretty long while ago in his RS when my GT was stock, and I couldn't tell when he was giving the car gas since I told him to just take off and I'll play catchup. When we pulled over he said that it was pretty close and I was asking why he didn't start the race.
Obviously that's to be expected from that model since he has the 305 TBI and auto tranny.
Guess I'll start looking for a nice clean third gen camaro now. Thanks a lot for the info.

I agree, when a Third Gen is done right, not many can compare. Here's a Twin Turbo Trans Am, which, should be able to give your stock GT a run for it's money....

Oh yea, didn't some european team/company recently make the fastest car in the world(or something similar along those lines) from a Third Gen T/A? I can't remember where I read that, but it had a picture of a nice clean, trans am I think.
It's a real shame about the third gens with those weak engines though. But it's not like a lot of other makers weren't squeezing down on power too during that time. At least the third gens still had a decent amount in most of the models, although a lot of people just see them and think they're just the 145(I think that was it) hp v8 cars. But at least it's still a nice looking car to drive around in.

This is what Gale Banks was able to accomplish two decades ago w/the 3rd Gen;

Even an 07 C6 with a procharger is a hell of a car. Not sure how much fun a stock Thirdgen would be after driving that!
