88 Camaro vs 5spd 2000ish mustang GT

Hey guys I just got my car together recently and just got plates and insurance last week. It's been a while since I'v been in a thridgen so I'm excited. My old thirdgen was slow as a turtle(got let down many times lol) so I'm not really sure where to place this one as far as lining up a good race. I'd just like to know if this sounds like a decent run or if I'd get blown away.

My car:
th350, shift kit, stalls arounds 2000rpm
355ci l98, stock but rebuilt pulled from 89 formula
Edelbrock 750, Performer intake
3.73 gears, posi
SFC's, LCA's
Tires are cheaper Kuhmo Ecstas, car doesn't hook that well but it isn't the worst I guess.

2000-2004 Mustang GT (what I know)
Cat back
CAI
Possibly a programmer

The GT could have more. The reason I say this is because the guy is a friend of a friend, and the friend (my friend) is the type who likes to keep his mods quiet, so this guy might be the same way.

I think it would be a good run, but I've never rode in one of those stangs. In my mind it seems like the HP should be about even(maybe he has a little more) but I would think I've got him beat in torque. What are my chances guys?

(I know these threads can be annoying but I just don't wanna set something up and get waxed)

2000-2004 would have the PI 2V heads, good for 260HP bone stock but still soft on the bottom end.

Ofcourse you dont race in the bottom end

You'll just have to race him.

Re: 88 Camaro vs 5spd 2000ish mustang GT

I'm assuming you shouldn't have an issue.

My car is a basically stock 350TPI, just got a few bolt on's (intake/exhaust/chip/shiftkit 700R4) and I've pulled pretty easily on a 2002 Mustang GT Vert with Intake/Exhaust. The weight balanced out too because i had three people in my car and only one in the mustang.

You shouldn't have a problem.

Sounds like I'm going to have to try and set this up. I've gotten a little side tracked right now though, got to pull the engine to replace the freeze plugs. Should have it back in within the next week or so and I will update this thread with results when the race actually happens.

Re: 88 Camaro vs 5spd 2000ish mustang GT

The 2nd day I owned my 88 IROC-Z 350 (before I started doing alot of mod and replacement parts work on it) I got "attacked" by a Mustang GT, a 2007 model I think. Anyways, I pulled away fast from him as he tried to pass on me. I kept going as he was to my right & he couldn't shake me. I lost him and got over to a slow lane quick just in case a cop was around. I had my girlfriend with me in the car too. So yes, you should be fine as my car at that time had less in it than what you have now.

Re: 88 Camaro vs 5spd 2000ish mustang GT

Well, I still havn't gotten to this car yet, but also got "attacked" by a mustang last night, but it was a 6cyl. lol I just dropped a gear and jumped a few lengths and he left me alone.

I haven't seen the guy in the GT in a while so I don't know when that race is gonna happen. I've got another one I'm thinking about setting up though and I'm completely clueless on how his ride will perform:

2002ish 4.8 single cab silverado, cam, shaved ls1 heads, small stall and a few bolt ons.

I've got a feeling it's gonna be pretty quick, but I guess there aint but one way to find out.

I think it's going to be a closer race than people here think. You basically have a stock L98(5 cubes don't mean anything and you didn't list cam specs so stock cam?) with a carb/intake and some 3.73's out back.

You might win but it won't be by much if the Mustang owner can drive(and if it's a 5-speed)

Honestly, I took them with my 305 ho with a few mods. The real reason thirdgen's hang with them is the torque is a lil better and the rear end gearing is way lower. With that gearing you should have them off the line for sure anyway.

Yeah stock cam and the mustang is a 5 spd. Like I said earlier tho, I havn't seen this guy lately. The race will go down, I just don't know when now.

Re: 88 Camaro vs 5spd 2000ish mustang GT

Omg guys my heart has been broken. I lined up with the stang earlier, and I guess it's my regulator, but I didn't even make it out of first gear before it bogged down and lost all power. I was so disappointed. It seemed to be running fine last night but I never actually hammered it from a dead stop either. Oh well, I've got all day tomorrow to try and fix the problem and if I can get it done we're doing it again tomorrow night.

Here's what I did see tho:

4 door Hemi beat the cammed silverado
same 4 door hemi beat another 4 door hemi
The mustang I was suppose to race beat the 4 door hemi by only about 2 lengths

Obviously Mr. Mustang can't drive, and I'm ready to stomp his ***. Also the Hemi driver got cocky and now wants to race me as well. Anyway, to be continued...lol

Whatever happens when you race this guy next just have some confidence & do your best. I've beaten a 2007 Mustang GT, back before I had all of my current mods. So whatever that means it just means you can do it if you are good enough. It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or by a mile, winning is winning!

Now that's the attitude I want to hear from another 3rd Gen. owner who wants to take down a Stang!

I meant to ask you, how is your gas mileage with the 3:73's?

Well, I haven't really had a chance to drive the car enough to give you a decent answer. I got the car together months ago but I'm just now getting it running good enough to actually drive it. So far it's left the house twice. I should be able to give a better answer towards the end of the week but from what I tell, it's not that horrible especially for having a th350 and 3:73's.

I'll give you an update in a few days.

Well it never rained plans got all screwed up anyway. I did get to put several lengths on the Hemi tho. According to him I'd take the stang pretty easy.

Meh, i have the little 84z28 190 hp l69 5 speed and 3.73s with minor mods. (performer rpm intake, holley 670, long tubes and full 3 inch, 13 degrees advance timing) they can't shake me, atleast not a 2007 gt. never raced a 2000ish model tho. Should have it in the bag. +1 for 25 year old cars beating new ones =)
