RIVALS??

Everybody has Rivals; some more than others…. A Rival is a person who is competing for the same object or goal as another, or who tries to equal or outdo another; competitor. I really don’t know if this is the word to use for this story. I am about to tell, so if I am wrong please let me know….. For everybody who knows me I own an 89 Camaro. Nothing fancy but I love my car!! I have owned several Camaros before, 7 to be exact. I use to have a friend that I had known for several years, we were both car fanatics. A few years back I sold him my 91 Rs Camaro, for what I thought was a fair price. A couple of years had passed and he had bought a different motor and stuff for his Camaro. I in the meantime had purchased the Camaro that I own now (89 Rs Camaro). He would bug me every time wanting to race and I had agreed to do so with stock motor against stock motor, well he changed his motor before we ever got to race. After he changed his motor he still wanted to race a 350 against a stock 305, both 5 speeds, both ttops. I always told him no because I knew I would lose. He was always trying to outdo me. We are not friends anymore due to certain circumstances, we both were wrong in a lot of things that happen and although he won’t admit any guilt in it. I will… So I lost a great car buddy that could enjoy talking to abut car things, but life goes on until tonight when I am driving my car to work. I am cruising along and I see a Camaro up in the distance, I immediately realize who it is an attempt to speed up so I do not have to get next to him before he makes the next available turn to his house. He catches up to me very quick and passes me so I slow down in another attempt that he will pass and cut in front of me to turn off and go to his house. I now know what he wanted, so I said **** it and punched it. I started to catch up and gain on him, but he pulled ahead about 4 to 5 sec into it. I knew this would happen but I laughed it off and thought I would congratulate him on his victory. We came to the next stop light and I rolled down the window…..he did not. As the light turned green he nailed it and took off…..I sat there and laughed and rolled off slowly and we hit the end of the bypass he went right and I went left to come to work. I really started thinking about what happen and the fact that he beat me and got what he wanted. What did I get besides embarrassment….nothing at all! I am not the type to lie and say “ ya I beat the hell out of that car”. I know he put a 350 in his car but for some reason I think a 305 could possible beat him one day, it’ll take alot of right parts and work but maybe it could happen. All he simply did was take an already built 350 and threw it in under the T.B.I unit and started driving it. It throws sparks and sounds like ****. Thank god no one was around to see my defeat, but instead I sit here and admit my loss and embarrassment to everyone! I’m sure he will enjoy it when he goes to work tomorrow and tells his friends about how he whooped my *** and my car is a piece of ****. So to him all I have to say is yes you do have a fast piece of ****, and as for my readers I leave you all with this…….Should I change my motor and find his *** again, or let it be and be the better man as I done once before??

Re: RIVALS??

You have admitted your defeat. Now, go buy an already built 383 and don't tell him. Then when the project is all done, make sure there are ALOT of people around and ask him to give you another shot. Should be a good time!

Re: RIVALS??

I agree with both of the above posters, but you're still the bigger man. He got what he wanted, but he wasn't brave enough to even roll down his window. Not even to rub it in your face. Don't be embarrassed, you knew you wouldn't win, but you went for it anyway. Sounds like you've got the attitude that many lack. A man can make a fast car, but a fast car can't make a man.

Is this 350 he installed a hot motor, or just an average rebuilt? I don't know what heads your 305 has, but there are plenty of 305 Camaros running 14s, some 13s, but I think they're tuned port. I think I talked to one guy that had a carbed 305 running 12s, but I don't know his setup. Even your 305 with 58cc L98 heads, a cam, TPI, headers, etc would probably walk him. Maybe gears too.

Re: RIVALS??

i wouldnt worry about a loss, theres always something faster out there

how much did he beat you by? 383s can get expensive to build... if it were me id just throw a 75 - 100 shot on your car and beat him with the 305. thats the cheapest, easiest solution

Re: RIVALS??

he has a 350 4 bolt main with roller cam. nothing else special about it i dont believe. i have done decided to put a diffrent cam, heads, lifters, and rods in. im determined to beat him with this 305 lol. I have a TBI setup and so does he. only thing is when he put in his 350 he didnt change anything and it runs like crap but it is still faster then mine. he didnt change the injectors or anything and i think he is starving for fuel, it back fires and throws sparks also. so im going to check into some heads and my buddy has a cam for me. so we will se what happens. it may be a couple of months before i can do it though. he definetly could have had the descency to roll done his window for sure!!

Re: RIVALS??

We all have a rival that deep down you never want to lose to no matter what lol! As far as keeping the 305 Id say go for it.If he is running his 350tbi like crap..it wont take much to beat him and edge out a win.Ive raced a 350tpi running good with my 305 lg4 that had some free mods, rebuilt auto trans, underdrive pullies and i only lost by a car length from a dig.His car was auto aswell and he was quite shocked that I had just a 305 under the hood.

Nitrous will give you a win no doubt but I prefer permanent power.Give that 305 headers,cat-back,gears,pullies,cold air intake,re-work the stock heads, port the intake some and retune...you wont be disappointed even with stock cam will be a fun daily driver.Change the came and switch intakes and most guys will think you got a 350 for sure.. and it will perform like one being lighter at the same time.

All depends how badly you want to beat this guy the next time you cross paths.

Ok another common misconception, the 305 and 350 engines are ALMOST identical, other than the water passages and bore/stroke they are the same. The blocks are both the same dimensions... therefore the same weight (or very close). Technically being the same block having smaller bores the 305 would actually be a heavier motor.. due to the fact that there is more material in the block than a 350. The 305's water passages are closer to the cylinders( for obvious cooling reasons) so a 305 can't be bored out to be a 350... Same block though. Your 305 is not any lighter....

Re: RIVALS??

Not a misconception ..the weight difference between the 2 is small but doesnt mean its not there.I wasnt saying its a drastic weight savings..just mentioning that they arent the same weight. I didnt say that the 305 could be punched ut to a 350 either. I suggested switching the cam and swap intakes and other neighboring cars would assume it to be a 350 by the way it sounds and much better performance from the 305 with mods.

Again, the 305 is actually heavier.... just backing my info up with facts. Hope you didn't take that too negatively, didn't mean it that way. And yes the 305 being lighter IS a misconception... its heavier. More material= More Mass... its simple.

Re: RIVALS??

I think what's more important here than having a faster car is the fact that you handled yourself like a much bigger person. It doesn't matter whether we're talking about cars, or anything else for that matter......there will ALWAYS be somebody else out there who has more than we do. How we actually "think" about it is how we're affected by it. It took me a while to realize what was really important in life, and what was simply "superficial".

I personally think you have nothing to prove to this joker by building a faster car. I know he use to be your friend and all, and I think what he did was pathetic,......but I'd just forget about him and build your car up because you want a faster car. Besides, you have plenty of time to feed that ***** a slice of humble pie later on down the road.

Re: RIVALS??

Don't worry about it all. Just ignore him until you get your car souped up & find him and beat him. We can't win them all in life & losing helps us build character. If you want to beat him then put a modified 350TPI or a LT1 or even a LS1. Then we'll see who is winning. Good luck!

Then well, I guess throw on a bottle of NOS - 75 or 100 shot, and spray away!

Re: RIVALS??

I think you should grow up.
All that happened was some guy you don't like anymore accellerated faster than you? So what? Its not like it was some great contest of skill, or engineering or craftsmanship. It wasn't some sanctioned event? it wasn't even a proper race.
If you have intentions to build your car, then by all means do so. If your so insecure as to spend a bunch of money and time just so you can "show him" then you are the smaller man.
Don't start a project for revenge or let some animosity dictate how you build your car. If you have a vision follow it. The reality is that in racing (without class rules) the winner is most often the guy who spends more money and time to win.

i agree and i dont at the same time i think telling the guy to "grow up" is a little harsh as he did nothing wrong in the situation and from the sounds of it his old buddy was the dick... that being said i dont think you should go drop money into your car just to beat the guy i mean if you do build ur car it should be on your own time and for your own reasons not just to prove yourself to some ******* who wouldnt even acknowledge u were there after he won... i mean to be honest with my buddies in our group of camaros mine is like maybe 3rd or 4th fastest out of the group but theres no way in hell im gonna go dump all my money into my car just to beat those guys even though they make fun of my car cause i cant beat em YET im gonna build it but im gonna do it on my own time and not just to beat them.
