Could I trap 85 in a 1/4 with my 2.8, fully ported heads, cam, 1.6 roller rockers, 3.42s and no tune? I've got some 275s of my Dad's out back.

 

I don't think those tires will help you lol. Weight loss would be the best way to get your time down. But I think you'll be a hair below 85mph.

Well it ran a 17.9 @ 77. Should be faster, my tranny is dying, and I spun. Tranny wouldn't go into 4th so I was hitting 7k RPM by the end of the track.

 

It wont go in 4th at WOT They aren't meant to stock

They make kits to let it shift to OD but I can't remember the name of them atm.

 

i have news for you if u are going threw the traps in the top of third gear at 7k rpms u hae some major transmission issues.

if i recall right at those speeds u should prolly just be shifting into third or be in 3rd gear for the last 300 or so feet of the track

my car with 4:10 rear gears traps 108+mph and rpms are only 6,200 i belive in third gear id have to dbl check some old data logs to be sure

 

Oh I know the tranny is complete crap. Its prolly getting a V8 or something soon. I dunno yet.

 

I run my car all the time (1991 3.1L rs) and it shifts into third like 200 ft before the traps..... i have a question though... ive been running 16.6s' and 7s' but im only going 79 mph... my 1/8 mile time is equevelent to running 16.2 or so but im not getting that out of it .....is there a way to get my tranny to shift into 3rd a little sooner??? like a programmer or something?? My car just has the basic bolt on mods... flowmaster exhaust, underdrive pulleys, and a custom CAI.

 

these cars always do better the first half the track, u need more hp to accelerate while at speed then from a standing stop,i.e hp to overcome the drag/wind resistance

a shiftkit will do what u want, when u install a shiftkit u will hae full automatic shifting when u put the trans in overdrive, but i will hae full control of up and downshifts when the gear lever is in the 1-2-3 position


i.e u could take off with the stick in 1st , if u accelerate and put it into 3rd right away the trans will shift into thirdgear

 

What rpm do you shift at? You'll probably be slower shifting into 3rd sooner. You need to hold it in 1st & 2nd as long as you can before power starts to drop on the far end of the powerband and the motor starts to choke. What really helps is to datalog your run and watch the rpm where acceleration starts to slow down and shift there. You'll have the best acceleration through 1st gear so you want to hold it as long as practical.

 

I spun every time. It's because my tires are so bald in the center. But I had fun no doubt.

 

I know this is a little old, but I've got a replacement 700R4 for the 6. It's going in this weekend and we'll see if there's a difference.

 

let us know how it went. im still running 16.7 or so at the track in my car.. wishing that i could make it shift faster... amazing that ive raced this 1992 camaro Rs 305 tpi twice the other day and i dusted him to the 1/8 mile.. but he ended up barly passing me running a 16.50 or so.. at like 83mph but i was at 79mph. they were close races and it make me remember what crap those 305 are...,y v6 was basically tied with him at the drag strip... awsome!

 

To the OP, ditto on the gearing, 3rd gear should get you 100+, and as stated it won't go into 4th stock, definitely shouldn't be turning 7k in 3rd at 77 mph, Idk what speed 2nd gear would put you at with 7k rpms, (would have to check the calc) but perhaps it is not shifting out of 2nd. Also ditto on the shift kit, that will allow you to select the gear you want, as well as firm up and quicken the shifts. I'm not as familar with mph figures as I am times, but it seems like it should be close to 85 mph, but if you don't have aftermarket exhaust you need to get one to really get the air moving through that thing, those stock t-pipes and cats aren't worth their weight in rust.

 

my best 1/4 mile et was 14.97 @ 89.95mph. Its hard to make these things fast without boost or spray. But, it can be done.

 

top of 2nd is about 72mph i think in my car.. but its not at 7k... more like 5.2-5.5k basically when the tranny shifts. If you get 85mph at the traps your easily running something in the 15 sec range considering I have 3.23s in the rear and rubberducky has 3.42 But anyway Rubberducky if your running 77 at 7000rpm that def. could be yout second gear.. Are you shifting the auto. manualy?? Because 7000 isent the stock shift point.. My car says 6500rpm but i know my tach is way off at high rpms/

 

I thought I had run mine up to 7k a few times then I hooked the laptop up to it and found out how bad the tach was off.....

 

yea its something... how far these tachs are off... mine says 6.5k when it shifts... didnt the company that made the chips for the tach. go out of business???

 

Its gotta be the tach. Mine is off by 50%. I hit 5k red line while only at 2400 rpms according to winaldl. I was shocked when I found out.
