91 trans am vs 2011 370Z **VID**

Me and my brother went out with a new freind of ours with a brand new nissan 370Z to play a little. We actually weren't expecting to do as well since his carb isn't tuned to the new motor yet, but these 370's trap around 105mph in the 1/4, so I think the outcome was good for an untuned chevy 350! Trans am has a 350 with heads, cam, holley 750, T56, and 4.10's. 370Z was a stock 6 speed manual car. Heres the vid...

Heads are procomp 210cc aluminum heads. Cam is a howards .488/.510 234/244 duration cam. It's got a performer RPM air gap intake on it. The carb is untouched from the old 350 combo that had a bigger cam but 9.0:1 compression and a vic jr intake. Plus that carb has been on an engine for about 8 years without a rebuild. Niether me or my brother are carb pros...I stick to fuel injection so I tend not to get into carbs much but he really needs to get it on a dyno and play with it to maximize the setup. We both know it should be way healthier than it is, especially with 10.7:1 compression. Part of the problem is that I don't know what kind of timing we should be running with that kind of compression. We have it set at 31 full advance currently and it's all in by around 3100 rpms. Wish someone that knew carbs lived close!!

I'm sure it possibly needs more fuel at WOT as well, and the idle mixture screws havn't been touched yet.

Should be running 36* total advance, I'd have it come in sooner, JMO,....

well sounds like it could use a tune but those heads are large and the cam is decent sized it should be well into the low 12's all said and done, which would outrun those 370z cars anyday.

Yea but with that compression ratio? I've heard different people say different things. Someone told me that on pump gas they wouldn't run more than 30 or so degrees at full advance.

you can run alot more with aluminum heads and that compression with that cam, but only if you are certain its getting enough fuel. I dont think it is so be careful with it.

And to think, a stock 5.3 with stock long block with a cam swapped in and a carb would walk away from that 370 with no problem, LOL.

thier is no set rule to timing. every motor is different therefore timing is different

Well True...though the 5.3 is a good engine, no denying that. But for pretty much just getting the car together and slapping on an untuned carb, I think it runs pretty well. I'm learning something new everyday with this setup and tuning it, so eventually it will be spot on and I'll get some rematch vids to see the difference.

Good to know, and I am sure it's not getting enough fuel either since the old combo was much more mild. Wideband, here we come haha. Thanks for all the info guys. Hopefully we can get this biatch running better and have a rematch.....then post up the vid.
