Dont understand what happen

I was on the highway and I see this grey 2001 mustang coming up behind me..I thought it was a v6 so I put it in D..I let him get beside me and I nail it, we are both side by side doing 80 until there was a van in my way so I had to slow down and let him pass me so we could continue. he passes me and I get right behind I was doing 90 94 by this time just to keep up with him. he gets in the right lane and I really hit it (it was pretty much nailed already) I slowy pass him doing 99 100..this is the part I don't get..when I was passing him he gave me the thumbs up .I past him then got in the right lane. I slowed back down to 70 and he past me doing 73 or so and while he was passing me he pointed at my car and nodded. What was that all about???? I thought it was a 6 but it had dual pipes..did this guy just not try or didn't want to race anymore ?? There were two people in the mustang but even with that he should have spanked me.I'm confused

It happens.....I don't know what to say.

the thumbs up thing reminded me of a month ago I was waxing my car when a new yellow BMW vert slowed down to 30 (i live in the country) and have me a big thumbs up. I had a smile on my face the rest of the day.

Either way he probably wasn't racing. Even a V6 from 99+ should be able to take you (probably). There's no way a GT would lose to near stock 305 TBI unless it was literally driven by a helper monkey.

The GTs dual exhaust is easily spotted though. They have half circle cutouts in the ground effects where the exhaust pipes exit. A V6 with an aftermarket exhaust wouldn't have that.
