Trans Am Owners

I guess you can all him my "Arch enemy" -heh Anyways, we use to race are poop cars. Now I got a IROC. Today Im washing my car, and I here a Nice rumble coming down the street. Then the cars 3 house before mine and he pins it. I turn and its him. He baught a white trans am (A Third Gen)

So, how do you tell a 350 TA from a 305 TA. How do you tell what year it is?

If he does have a 350, wont it be close? Dont we have the same engines?

Thanks guys

Few more q's. If a TA has a 350, does that mean its a GTA? Can a trans am have a 350 and not be a GTA? Whats so special about a GTA?

Sorry I dont know my trans am's-heh

ok...check the VIN for the 350 or 305..i THINK its the 8th digit 8 for 350 F for 305..u won't be able to tell by lookin at the engine..also if its a 5speed its most likely a 305 unless someone swapped in a engine or tranny since the L98 and T5 weren't offered together.

A T/A COULD in fact get a 350 TPI(L98) though they are rare...easiest way to tell if its a GTA is to look at the fenders...if it has the side air vents its a T/A if not it COULD be a GTA..i say "could be" because people try to pass off T/A's as GTA's...the end all sign in the T/A or GTA decision is the "Y84" RPO code on the RPO code list in the center console compartment..

As far as what is so special about the GTA? it was considered the luxury model of the T/A's. They usually got leather...steering wheel controls and the 350(though they all could be purchased in the T/A trim package)

both good sites for GTA info:

www.gtasourcepage.com
www.transamgta.com

i'm sure i missed stuff so anyone else wanna help me out?

Just remember...dont be fooled by the VIN #. The previous owner could have dropped another engine in it. If you looked at my car...you wouldnt be able to tell what I had in it...and you wouldnt even be able to tell what year it is. You have to be careful...since everything is interchangeable with the '82-'92 TA's. My '83 TA has a 350 4 bolt in it...it was dropped in by the previous owner. Stock my car had the LG4...yuck..those engines suck. My friend has an '86 camaro SC w/an LG4...it is slow as hell. Well also, my car has the front end and gfx from an '87...so it looks nothing like an '83. Just be careful...b/c you might think the car has one thing...and it will have something to surprise you. Your better off just asking him what he has. Or...just race him...and find out for yourself.

This is off the subject a little bit, but when you dropped your 4-bolt in did the car sit a lot lower. I just got done installing my 350 truck 4bolt last night and I can't get a jack under the front cross member even with the clete off of it. The car sits real low(this is even better than lowering springs, I get two for one). Also I've been wondering if anyone else takes two months to do a two week job too. The little things on this project are nickle and diming me to death.

If you check out the history section, it will tell you the different things that came in the TA... like the power bulge hood and the third brake light (85 and later). If he has a flat hood it's probably a 305 or less and if he has power bulge it's 305 or 350 (85 and 86 had no bulge)... check for TA louvres bihind front wheels... check his exhaust too, I have dual exits on my 305 but it's only a 2" pipe... it's probably bigger on the 350's... oh yeah.. if there's a spoiler like mine (check link) then it's probably pre-'87

ATOMonkey...I didnt own my TA when it had the stock 305 in it...so I couldnt tell you if it dropped it or not...but I have been told by some people that my car does seem to sit low. Maybe that is what it is..they thought it may be something with my shocks...but I guess it is from the engine. It looks considerably lower than my neighbor who has the same car...but with a V6. My car was converted to look like an '86 though. Oh yea....when you look at cars...be very careful at making guesses as to what they are just by looking at them. I fool many with my TA...since it looks like an '86(due to the third brake light on the top of the spoiler and the black rubber spoiler)...yet it has the stock '83 powerbulge hood. Also...I was fooled about what appeared to be an '89 TTA. The person was honest though and told me that it wasnt a real one..and that they just made it look like one. The only thing that gave it away was the VIN #...and the 5.0 engine. The exterior and interior looked like it was a real TTA.

85 and 86 didn't come with a L98...well 2 birds had a L98 in 86...so i doubt its one of them '87 is when the L98 was common

ummm,huh???
85 and up TA's never had the powerbuldge....only F-body that came with a powerbuldge from the factory were 84 H.O. TA(due to working cowl hood) and 87-92 Formulas(305 or 350) no TA 85-92 had a power buldge from the factory....
just figured id clear that up

My car has the stock engine and I do have a power bulge and it is an LG4 not an L69 (HO)
and

I'm SOOO sorry if I said TA's came with the power bulge hood, you ar right... the 87 Formula is where it came back, but most people refer to the firebird as the TA... no matter the actual model type...

if he has a 350, and you have a 350, chevrolet usually wins. pontiacs are heavier cars.

hey, i know you dont want another expense, but you are gonna ruin your suspension if you dont get heavier duty stuff and lower it the right way.
