88 v6 firebird vs. 01 VW GTI
Okay, so we have a 2001 Volkswagen GTI, 1.8 turbo, auto, has about 150hp and 155 torque i think. Brand new and stock.
I have a 88 Firebird, 2.8, auto, 120,000 miles, tuned, with:
Complete flowmaster catback system, K&N, JET chip/thermo, new GT qualifier tires all around. Stock = 135hp/160tq.
What are my chances do ya think? Those VW's are light! What else should I do to ensure a win? (nothing crazy $$)

As much as a hate Beetles I don't think you'll be able to take one like that without spending some money. A turbo Beetle runs high 15's, a stock 2.8 Camaro runs low 18's. Your mods probably have you in the 17's and with some nitrous you could probably take him. Other than that you'll have to spend some major money.

Endosteel - it's not a beetle, it's one of those VW hatchback things.
Anyone else have a few comments, suggestions on ensuring a win? I don't have to race till he comes to town mid sept. Thanks.

You mean a VW Golfe, Golf, Gulf or Gulfe...however you spell it...something like that. I am not sure about their horsepower ratings or thier torque. V6 Firebirds are pretty slow though...so good luck. My friend has an '86 LG4 and his car is really slow compared to the newer cars out there. They squeeze out so much HP from these new 4 bangers...and dont get me wrong some of them are nice cars(and yes I would probably drive SOME of them). But then again it could be that I am just used to my 350 TA. Good luck, you never know you may stand a chance. But keep in mind most of those VW Golfe's (spelling) are 5 speed. I think they are pretty nice cars if you do the right things to them...I am not sure about speed though.

The GTI is quite impressive, it could rival a 305 if the driver was just a little ****y. I got smoked at a light once... of course it was no place for a race, the ******* just pulled up along side me on a one lane road... He flew up a 35 degree hill at an impressive speed... but he was an ******* mind you... he got what was coming to him, he bottomed out after catching some mad air and totally ****ed the underside of his car

where i live in Jersey the whole VW thing is pretty popular. There are many GTIs, Golfs, Jettas, and (cringe) beetles. Watch out, those GTI's are pretty speedy. I think they're similar in performance to a Civic Si. He'd probably take you. But hey, 2.8->3.4 swap add nitrous and youll take em. later.
