can i beat a 86 Iroc LG4

I kid at school just got a 86 iroc that has a carbed 305 (I assumed that is the LG4). it is a 5 sp with no mod except no exhaust.

when he bought it everyone of my friends told me he'd smoke me, then I found out it was an ' 86 LG4 and there fore not tpi. I think I have a decent shot because I flat out smoked a 86 lg4 auto. (I know the Iroc is going to be faster than the sc, so don't think I'm Iroc bashing because I'm scared of the tpi until I get a 383 tbi)

I had the same motor, except for an auto and it was slow but I still managed to beat a late 90's Prelude. I am guessing he will be around 15.8- low 16's with a stick.

Just because it's not a TPI doesnt mean that it has to be an LG4. Have you ever heard of an carbed L69 H.O. 305? They are rated at 190 hp and are capable of running mid to low 15s. I had an 85 IROC with the L69 5 speed with factory 3.73 gears that ran 15.2s with no mods. If the 8th digit of his vin# says G then he has this motor. If it says H then it does have the LG4. If it has the 145HP LG4 then I wouldnt worry about getting beat.

Check the tech section on this site. Notice how few L-69s were built in 1986. I think its safe to say that if the motor is carbureted, its an LG4. Whether its the original engine or not is another story altogether though.

You beat me to it, for the most part if it's an 86 don't even think it's an HO. Of course I should have researched this when I first bought my car, instead of thinking I was buying an HO I would have known.

if it is an l69 he will kill you, if not it will be a good race. there is a 165 horse 250 torque carbed motor in 1986, if it is that he could definately give you a good race. that would put him 5 horse and 5 ft lbs under you, so it would come down to the better driver. also, if your is an automatic, i think you might get beat all around, i am pretty sure he is either sitting at 165 horse 250 ft lbs of torque, or 190 horse, and if it is a 5 speed, he will have an edge on you. i would say get gears to beat him for sure.

You didn't say if you had a automatic or stick. Before you race this guy, you have to dump as much weight as possible and do the "10-minute tune up". Remove the passenger and rear seats. Add a few degrees of base timing. Buy a V or Serpentine belt that bypasses the air pump & power steering pump. Ice your intake. Remove the front roll bar or sway bar, pump up the front tires to 45 psi. Lower the rear tires of your car to 25 psi. Install a 180-degree thermostat. Rip this guy's head off. Good Luck!

thanks for the replies guys

I forgot to mention one thing though, we both have speakers but I'm the only one smart enough to take them out, but I'm not sure if he has an ac or not.

I just sold an 86' LG$ 5 speed car about 3 months ago. It had: L98 car manifolds, Y-pipe , and cat back, gutted cat, Edelbrock 600 cfm carb and performer intake, and the timing was bumped up to around 13-14 degrees. Plus, all of the computer controls were gone. This car had few options - T-tops, 3.23 disc rear, fog lights, ERS, and the IROC package. It was a very light car. I believe I am a decent driver, it ran a string of 15.20's on street radials at 91 MPH. It had a stock, but newly rebuilt motor as well. But all parts were factory issue w/ the exception of the few induction parts.

I'd say that it should be a good race if he can drive a 5 speed decent.

just went to track, I SHOULD have ran a 15.6 or so, dang it. oh well. Now I can do the ultimate tbi 2, and 3, shift kit, and maybe gears.

next time I'll see if the Iroc will come along with me and I'll smoke him because I'll also (besides the mods up top) be running a shorter belt, missing seats, better tires, and no front sway bar.
