I read an old article from 89 and a 5-speed 5.0 stang beat a 5-speed TPI 305. I think that the 90-92 305's would destroy a stang because they had 230 HP and the stangs had the same 5.0 engine; from 89.

Like everyone said, there are too many different versions of the 305. A later year TPI 305 is about even with a 5.0 as far as power goes, but the ford has more high rpm ability than TPI ever will (unless seriously modded). Just because they are about the same size though dosen't mean they should be even. The ford is a short stroke big bore engine, good for HP. Ours is a long stroke small piston, good for torque but not hp. All around the Ford 302 is much better than the 305. But now the old (rare) GM 302... those are way badass.

It depends. Some Third Gen 305's aren't fast but some are, the faster 5.0 TPI's are the 85 305 autos and the 305 5 Speeds with G92.

If you mean the LG4 in your '84 and its against an EFI '86-up (or even an earlier carbed GT), don't even waste your gas racing him

yay!
haha, btw, who ever called the GM 302's badass, lmfao, they're slow, my dad has one in his 79 firebird..with 50k miles, all orignal and is PERFECT, but it still an EXTREMELY slow car
You might be thinking of a Pontiac 301 motor, which is quite lame compared to a DZ-302 motor. In 1969 they had the 302 in the Z/28 because SCCA mandated that the most c.i.d. a motor could "legally" be to race is 305. They took a 327 block, various sets of heads, and a 265/283 crankshaft, which made this motor a 9000 rpm revvin' beast!
301 Turbo V8s are even slow. But the DZ302 isn't. The 302 is a great motor. The 67-69 Z/28s were very fast cars, the 69 being the best.

Hey! dummy! they didn't have Chevy 302's in 79 and even if they did I doubt a 79 PONTIAC would have a chevy motor in it "orginal". A 302 chevy was only available in the late 60's and was created because chevy had ton of 283 internals laying around so they destroked a 327. You could rev them to around 7500 rpm's and they did scream!! So nice try poser.
belive it or not the 79-81 firebird series car had probley more engine options then any other, they could have the 400 pontiac, 403 olds, 231 v-6 buick, 305 chevy, 301 pontiac, or the turbo 301 pontiac. kinda goofy back then in the late 70's the 79' had the 400 pontiac for the first part of 79' and the high altitue and smog areas got the 403 olds, the late half of 79-81 had the 301 with optional 301 turbo and the smog areas belive it or not got the 305 chevy, also the v-6 buick on the base models,
